Why Trudeau’s Handgun ‘Freeze’ Is Doomed to Fail

in Uncategorized

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last week a national “freeze” on the purchase, sale, and transfer of handguns.

Henceforth, law-abiding citizens will not be allowed to transport newly acquired firearms into the country.

“Canadians have the right to feel safe in their homes, in their schools, and in their places of worship. With handgun violence increasing across Canada, it is our duty to take urgent action to remove these deadly weapons from our communities,” said Trudeau last Friday.

“Today, we’re keeping more guns out of our communities, and keeping our kids safe,” he continued.

The ban on handguns comes on the heels of a sweeping federal ban on modern sporting rifles, and both measures are part of a larger Liberal Party plan to restrict access to firearms in the name of “preventing gun violence.”

Critics of the ban have rightly pointed out that it is doomed to fail.

Mainly because the majority of guns used in crime — roughly 85 percent — were illegally smuggled into the country from the U.S. and are possessed by criminals who refuse to obey the law.

This is something the Trudeau administration is aware of.  The Public Safety Ministry stated as much in a 2018 paper discussing gun violence:

The vast majority of owners of handguns and of other firearms in Canada lawfully abide by requirements, and most gun crimes are not committed with legally-owned firearms.

As Lorrie Goldstein of the Toronto Sun added further, “The problem with freezing handgun sales, a national handgun ban, or allowing cities to ban handguns — all ideas the Trudeau government has floated since being elected in 2015 — is that they reduce focus on illegal handguns.”

Law-abiding citizens with registered handguns are not a threat to public safety.  Yet, this is precisely who Trudeau is targeting with the ban.

Destroying the legal market for handguns has no impact on the black market for handguns, as our friends at TheGunBlog.ca observed.

This means gun smugglers will continue to flout the law to ensure that Canada’s criminal element has all the guns they need to victimize (unarmed) citizens.

And when Trudeau’s “freeze” fails to achieve the desired goal of reducing gun violence, the prime minister can then double down on more gun control in the form of widespread handgun confiscation.

Trudeau won’t stop until all law-abiding Canadians are fully disarmed. That’s where things are headed.

Trudeau wants to turn all of Canada into one big gun-free zone. Yeah, that’ll work Real well! The CCP is smiling.

  • Brian October 29, 2022, 8:15 pm

Once again Trudeau proves that “subjects” only have the “rights” that tyrannical politicians and governments wish to give them.

Honestly it’s not the takeing of guns from honest citizens that’s going to curb the violence how about a task force to annalize phsycopaths and disturbed individuals who gave law enforcement plenty of warning before executing there in tensions. example : The Nova Scotia nut case

If you are not satisfied with this country’s gun laws I am sure we commenters can give you some suggestions
    on where you can go.

  • Scott A. October 28, 2022, 3:01 pm

Well, now all the criminals know where the shooting gallery is now. They will have total freedom without fear of return fire.

  • Bernie Schwartz October 28, 2022, 2:59 pm

It is a strong possibility that Red China is supporting all this so that a physical take over of Canada cannot be resisted.

The artical is correct, and people that try to pass thees laws know it also, they cant be that stupid, so it must mean they have a different motive than stopping gun violence.

Trudeau is living in a dream world. Guns don’t kill. PEOPLE kill.

Castro Jr will never stop until he is a total dictator like his idol and real father Fidel Castro. Look at the pictures of him as a baby in Castro’s arms and look at the resemblance, tell me he couldn’t be his son.

85% hmmmm I wonder what country came up with that off the wall figure???? Could it be the country that is trying to cash in on the Biden gun plan…….

    • DIYinSTL October 28, 2022, 7:35 am

The source of the 85% number is “GAO Firearms Trafficking Report d09709” which of course is the supposed number of U.S. guns used by the Mexican cartels. But if you do the math it is (or was since this report is 13 years old) really just 11%. To save you a lot of reading, the 85% number is how many confirmations by the FBI of a U.S. sourced firearm that the Mexican government asked the U.S. to trace. Most of the guns confiscated by the Mexican government are obviously not of U.S. origin so no request to the FBI is made.

So, you are saying that Canada’s handgun freeze… would work better… if the US had tighter gun laws.

I think Mexico might have some thoughts to offer on this as well.

Our overly relaxed gun laws are not only threatening Americans in American streets but those in neighbouring countries as well.

    • Let's go Brandon, FJB October 28, 2022, 7:13 am

@bluewaffle, Did you not read the article? Criminals don’t abide by the law; they either steal guns or trade for them on the black market. The only threat in these countries are degenerates like you who are destroying our freedoms. FJB. Si Vis Pacem Parabellum.

    • AK October 28, 2022, 9:31 am

So, you’re saying the Mexican cartelistas who supply you and yours with the drugs you have needed to get through the day since 1969, are getting their heavy weapons – RPGs, medium machine guns, automatic rifles – full automatic just for emphasis – from Lone Star Bubba’s Bullets and Bait across the Rio?

    • Jay October 28, 2022, 9:42 am

Tell me, honestly, what leads you to believe the gun laws in the United States are “overly relaxed”?

      • D.J. October 30, 2022, 7:41 pm

My belief , Jay , is that our boy there , is an over educated ,
        sympathetic communist insurgent .

Other than drug use , what else could explain “ his “
complete disregard for “ preserve , protect , and defend
The Constitution of The United States of America “ ?

    • Michael Keim October 28, 2022, 11:41 am

Why does anyone pay attention to this troll?

      • Boom October 28, 2022, 12:25 pm

        Boredom I guess ..

    • D.J. October 28, 2022, 2:59 pm

Have you ever considered becoming a citizen
      of Canada ?

I believe you would be a good fit .

Ha, caught you! You pretend to be American, yet you just spelled “neighbor”(as an American would) as “neighbour”(a British spelling). Knew there was something fishy about you. Go troll in your own backyard, asswipe.
