Wal-Mart Swingers – Stay Away

in Accessories Misc., Authors, Paul Helinski
Wal-Mart Swingers - Stay Away
Wal-Mart Swingers - Stay Away
These orange boxes are on the shelf at certain gun friendly Wal-Mart stores. The only one we have tested so far is this model marked 9mm-.30-06 caliber, implying that it handles
both handgun and rifle rounds. But as you can see it doesn’t handle rifle rounds at all.

Wal-Mart Swingers - Stay Away
Maybe it is just a fluke when the top flies off of the first one on the 4th round from a .308 at 100 yards.

Wal-Mart Swingers - Stay Away
But on the second one the top flew off on the first round. Note that on neither of these was the top piece shot at or hit.

Wal-Mart Swingers - Stay Away
The Do-All-Outdoors website now lists this target at 9mm only, but it is still listed as being able to handle .30-06 on Amazon, and of course on the boxes being sold to unwitting Wal-Mart customers.

We don’t usually have a lot of negative reviews here at GunsAmerica Magazine. There is no point in them generally. The old adage “any publicity is good publicity” rings true for gun products like anything else, so if we get a product in that stinks, we usually just decline to review it. The exception is when a product is something you will stumble on most likely, and it is really bad. This is just a heads up about the swinging targets currently in the gun isle at the Wal-Marts that sell guns and have a big gun section. We bought the targets you see here in Okeechobee, Florida Wal-Mart, but none of the south Florida stores even have them.

With all the new gun nuts out there shooting steel instead of paper, Wal-Mart apparently wants a piece of the action and decided to sell
us yet more Chinese junk. Some time ago we put in a request to “Do-All-Outdoors” to review some of their swinging and self healing range targets, and we got no reply.
They had been advertising in the industry print rags trying to get dealers, and at some point they scored Wal-Mart as a retailer.
After a dismal experience with Winchester branded .22LR swinging targets from Wal-Mart, we decided to give a few of their targets a try, and they are really bad.

If it was only one maybe you could argue we got a bad one, but we bought three of these swinging targets and shot into two of them. The first one broke in half on the forth round of .308 Winchester at 100 yards. The second one broke in the same place on the first round using the same load. The Amazon reviewers claim that even a .223 shatters these targets. They are certainly not rated for rifle caliber rounds at all.

Take a look at the targets page of their website. The swinging targets that you see here, the ones that broke, are advertised on the box as covering from 9mm to .30-06, but on the website they are listed as 9mm only. They are still being sold at Wal-Mart with no warnings whatsoever that they cannot handle rifle caliber rounds, but indeed they can’t. The link from the Do-All-Outdoors website to Amazon to buy them also still lists this model as 9mm-30-06, open to unwitting purchasers.

This is just a heads up to our GunsAmerica subscribers. The box does claim that Do-All-Outdoors has a lifetime warranty on these products, but you apparently have to fill out a PDF on their website in order to get a refund. They will have to
refund every one of these, and they are still for sale at Wal-Mart, Amazon, and all over the web. If you bought one of these and haven’t shot it yet, return it. If you broke it, you can call Do-All-Outdoors at 866-SHOT-DOC or email at [email protected].

There are plenty of companies online selling steel targets from Action Target and smaller companies that will tell you the steel rating of the target itself. Don’t buy targets for rifle rounds unless you get this information up front.
No steel targets are cheap, including these defective ones from Do-All-Outdoors. Stick to US made steel targets from a company you can trus and at least you’ll get targets that can be used, and that will last.

Hey I just bought one of these like 3 weeks ago and decided to see how tough it really was… I’ve been shooting 5.56 soft nose at it over and over from about 40-50 yards, and haven’t had any issues with mine, just don’t hit the frame, cuz if you do back out to 200 yards and clip the frame it will rip right thru it, just got done filling holes in and reattaching tack welds with my welder, but the actual target faces have been hammered with 9mm and 5.56 and not so much as a ding on mine…

  • david August 5, 2014, 12:06 am

Are the circles welded onto the swing arms? I made a couple out of 3/8 cheap steel A plasma cutter cut a 5″ circle with a 1.5″ wide stick coming off. Heated the swing arm with a MAP gas torch and twisted 90 degrees just off the circle. hang from rebar and use 3/4″ conduit stuck in the ground on either end. 3 swings spaced with 1/2 inch conduit on the rebar. Have shot them till the plates are dished with 38 357 9 40 45. Hundreds of rounds and not broke yet.

That is crazy that the top broke off from a 308 hit, that cheapo target must have been made in China like everything else from Wallmart. I am thinking about making a shooting target like this and selling it, but one that actually lasts.

Great review thanks for taking the time!

  • BicycleMilitia December 24, 2012, 1:35 am

Liar thought he was on the Huffington Post or some other Liberal site!

  • Matt December 21, 2012, 7:58 pm

Ya, but no point buying a spinning target for a .22. I bet it doesn’t spin or move much when hit with it.
Good negative review. The annoyance of returning crap at Walmart isn’t worth the “savings.” Cabelas is about as bad. They have decent hunting clothing, but their name is starting to be associated with junk quality, off brand crap, primarily made in China. Klim and stuff like that is decent, but if it has Cabela’s signature on it I go the other way: it translates as cheap and made in China.

  • JS December 12, 2012, 11:42 am

Anyone with half a brain in their head ought to be able to look at these targets and KNOW they won’t withstand any medium to high power action. I gotta wonder about you “wonder-boys” that are trying to use magnum loads, 30-06, 308’s ect on these units and then whine they don’t hold up. Are you sure you are even qualified to own a firearm?

  • Dirk December 11, 2012, 8:59 am

Hi guys and thanks for the warning about another shoddy Wally World product.

While I do go to Walmart I would be far happier if they closed down. I generally only go to Walmart if I can am unable to find their cheap un-American stuff somewhere else. The same can be said for most of the big box retailers.

I did just fine prior to walmart coming into my small town and my town would do better if they left. They give cheap wages and IMO add nothing to the spirt of the community. I used to like hunting around town for those prodcuts I needed. Infact I would end up buying more stuff as I had to go to more shops to try and find the thing I wanted. Spending that extra money in my community was IMO a good thing. Wally world is part of the reason for America’s decline.

  • Bob December 10, 2012, 6:12 pm

If you want to shoot at steel stuff look to the vehicle salvage yard. Disc brake rotors are good and so are brake drums, wheels and rims and you can get them cheap and sometimes for free. I drive a t-post into the ground, wire the rotor to the post and shoot the hell out of it with whatever artillery I have. The wire can allow it to flop around when hit or you can really strap it down and add a spray of orange paint for marking purposes. And it takes a lot of hits to break/deform this stuff (the posts sometimes get slammed pretty good)and if you break it, who cares? Just haul it out with you so that no-one can gripe about the junk shooters leave behind.

    A. Avoid Walmart
    B. Never buy any Chinese product
    C. Most Chinese software products including games and other simple items come with embedded malware that the gooks may use at their convience to access your PC. Many of these products embedded gives the gooks access to you bank and investment accounts. They even put input readers that allows them to follow your every keystroke.
    D. I worked in IT at a secure research facility with ultra powerful-50 Tesla magnets-cobalt and radium sources- and some very basic software was found to be stealing our costly research by the keystroke and sent the info daily(nightly) directly to China facilities where reverse engineering gave them all of our “top secret” info. This at a major University in Texas
E, Bottomline…Avoid Chinese products like the bird flu.
    F. Though an excellent business, Walmart is aware of the embedded programs, and refuses to address it.

I picked up one of the three target versions at Academy some time ago but, as I recall, it was marked as being for 22 or airguns. My wife and I shoot at these every week with a 22 from 25 yards and have had no problems. I was, however, very surprised to see that some of these are advertised for larger caliber rounds. Frankly, I wouldn’t shoot at any metal target with a larger caliber round. We use paper for everything other than the 22.

  • a b December 10, 2012, 9:01 am

If you want one of these type targets go to a local welding shop and they can fabricate one out of steel that will last as long as you do most likely. I know a couple of welders that can fabricate almost anything you want and it will look good and work.

  • Rick December 3, 2012, 1:50 pm

I bought mine at Academy. I shot it with cast lead bullets in my 32-20, and had no problem at all.

  • Michael S. December 3, 2012, 8:19 am

I don’t understand the article. I am a shooter in the extreme, everything from .17 to 458 Mag. Common guys. Who would even shoot a 3006 at a piece of pot metal obviously good only for 22 LR. I have some of these and they do fine with my 22LR, and have for years, guess cause I do always hit the round part and never the legs. You won’t see me destroying them with anything bigger because it’s a no brainer.

    • Administrator December 3, 2012, 8:27 am

Except that it says .30-06 on it. Did you miss that part?

      • Rick December 7, 2012, 11:42 am

It also says not for jacketed bullets.

  • John Griffin November 30, 2012, 3:34 pm

I bought one of these 22 steel targets not bad for 22 took a chunk I turned my m-16 on it and well you know it was funney I punched holes into it my 9mm no way only lead bullets please and not to close. Very bad point steel plate must be tilted down towards the ground to keep the bullet from comming back on you

Its for 9mm and 30-06 only not 9mm through to 30-06. Get a clue !

  • Ed November 12, 2012, 6:26 pm

Wal-Mart sells whatever their customers buy. Its as simple as that. They sell cheap Chinese stuff because their customers buy it over the more expensive US made stuff. Of course now there is very little that is US made anymore so that’s not so much of a problem. At any rate, the price these things sell for should be your first hint as to their quality. I have one, but shoot only .22 at it. My rifle targets are much better material.

  • melvin Parscal November 12, 2012, 8:42 am

make your own target….go to weld shop and him cut a 1/4 plate to any shape you want. Then weld a piece of 3/8
pipe to middle. Then make a pipe stand that will slide in 3/8 sleeve. simple .might cost a little more but will be
    much stronger.

  • William-Dahl October 29, 2012, 5:26 pm

It’s not where something that is actually made, but rather whether the company gives good specifications to the actual manufacturer and performs quality assurance to ensure that the part means the specifications. If the company just says to manufacture the product to a certain price point, then you should not be surprised that you are getting a substandard product regardless of where the actual manufacture of the product occurs.

If you are looking for a steel target to shoot any caliber at then look no further than http://www.tacstrike.com I have several of their targets and have yet to find something that you can’t shoot at them. I have personally shot 5.56 and 7.62 at 50 yards and have shot everything from 9mm to 44 magnum at them at 25 yards and I haven’t had a single complaint. The steel is AR-500 (with a Brinell hardness of at least 495).

I have talked to Rob (the owner) and he has personally shot .50 cal BMG at the target at 500 yards and it knocks the target over with no damage. He has also shot .338 Lapua at the target with no damage.

Here are a couple videos to check out:

I guess I just have good luck. I have the exact same one as the first 3 pics and the model SS6306 (3 auto reset targets). I got mine from Academy last year and they’re still alive. I’ve shot them with Russian and American (steel and lead core) ammo in 9mm, 40 s&w, .45acp, and 7.62×25 Tok surplus. I’ve hit every bit of metal on them from the circles to the middle twisted section to even the rods. Had one round get part of itself stuck between the rod and hole.

The distance I shoot varies to what I feel like. Very close to as far away as I feel comfortable. The only ammo that even marks it up is the 7.62×39 Russian surplus.

  • ass9 October 4, 2012, 10:54 pm

Just about every manufacturer has a walmart pile.Under par products are sent to walmart so dont be surprised. This is why walmart will never give you a hard time with a return.Once returned the stuff is thrown in the garbage because the manufacturer doesnt want it back because it was defective in the first place.Im not saying every single thing they sell is seconds but it is pot luck if you get something decent of not.Pay attention and you shall see.

Hey guys, I have been using Do-All products for years. Over all I have had great success with their gear. If I ever have a problem I call, They fix it done deal. I have shot all of there steel targets as well as the ground bouncers. The steel, if you are at the right distance and use the correct caliber will hold up 99% of the time. I had a dualing try lose a paddle while shoot my 1911. I called they sent me a new dualing tree. So thats my 2 cents I hope it helps. Its easy for people to bad mouth a product or company with out giving the whole story.

Guys, and gals.. I got one thing to say, you get what you pay for. As owner of a machine shop that has gone from 22 employees in the ’90s to 5 now, we have experienced the costs of job-jacking to China as much as anyone. And this kind of crap is what you get for it. And American prices have had to go up as a result because we gotta
stay alive somehow. Thank your government and Big Business for that.
If you want great targets, go to a machine/welding shop near you and have them make some. They may be pricey, ( you can’t get something for nothing) but they will work. We have a lot of American employees that are about to get laid off due to the Chinese and Big Business stealing our jobs. Bet you can get some made pretty quickly if you are willing to pay a fair price. Just a thought.

  • Alan September 17, 2012, 8:05 am

Wow! I really don’t think that “Wally World” is the Great Satan. Heck, they match sale prices so I save a TON on Food and Dry Goods. I can get cheap plinking ammo without paying for shipping and it’s just Smart to shop at one place instead of five. Have Y’all ever seen Hickock on You Tube? He’s got a hillside full of targets/steel/gongs and even cheap 2ltr soda pops to shoot. Those soda bottles are not bullet proof! They BUST but He’s not whining, He’s laughing and so am I. My Friend the Welder Fabricator has all the scrap steel a Guy could use and He’ll cut it for You and sell it cheap and if Your 303 armor piercing ammo screws it up You can get plenty more. I appreciate the heads up on these cheap but attractive targets. It’s kinda like a real pretty, flashy, fishing lure. It’s main purpose in being is to catch some poor fisherman who hasn’t been catching many fish! It doesn’t seem fair but that’s why products are made to look GOOD so they will catch Your eye and make you Buy! Once You’ve spent Your money, their job is done. Why complain about Wally World? That’s like griping because the 19.99 great drill You bought at Harbor Freight didn’t hold up like Your Buddies 300 dollar Milwaukee Drill. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

  • magnis September 17, 2012, 1:04 am

i don’t know the exact targets you got. but i’ve never seen anything sold at walmart that was ment to be shot with anything larger the .22lr. i think that might be the case here, that these targets arent ment to handle larger rounds. granted i work in a steel fab shop so i just build my own and never bought these myself.

  • Michael September 3, 2012, 11:57 am

Shot a leg off one of theses from wally world at 50yd with a 22 subsonic round, was shooting with the kids happened after about 20rds , lucky I tested it first. The welds on the other leg were clearly cracked also, use only for slow bb guns. NOT A SAFE FIREARM TARGET

  • Curt L August 21, 2012, 4:48 pm

I must pass the information I have been given by a friend who deals with China on a regular basis. He builds large water pumps and what he has said is china can build great products. Their business model sucks. What they will do is build the first line as spec in the plans and if you approve they keep building them BUT if you miss a spec on a product they will keep reducing costs on the one part until it is a piece of wood instead of steel( his words). Unless you catch it they will not stop reducing cost and in the mean time that one part you overlook fails the whole machine. That being said my personal experience has seen this using products from china. He also said they will steal your design and sell it elsewhere with no product history to help them make a good product. That is why you get major failures on products that “look” like the “USA” products at half price or less.

Please apply common sense to what you shoot. Those targets are at best rimfire and air rifle. 30- 06 ball rounds will go through 1/2″ soft steel and barely make it jump. If you want to shoot steel look at what steel targets Wideners sells.

  • lmsteimel August 20, 2012, 10:38 am

I’m with you Spencer Adsit. Their is nothing wrong with Walmart. They supply what people want. If anybody wants too do better, start your own store. They provide a lot of jobs too.

I bought one of the self healing targets from them, took a look at it and immediately returned it. It was junk. Like with any business “buyer beware.”

You can return anything you buy from them.

  • Davidio Flavio August 7, 2012, 4:01 pm

Yeah “DEAN”, you can kiss this local welders butt on main street bud.

A good working knowledge of ALL metals is a must for any hanging their welders sign up outside the door. Even us rural ones that only have one or two pickemup trucks. To do so in this litigious society today, is just plain asking for a lawsuit. The first thing I would advise folks like you to do, is go somewhere else, because I’m not selling anything that could come back to haunt me, especially for something like a gun target. And especially not for a CASE OF BEER!

Do you think all welders are drunken buffoon Bubba’s that can be bought for song? Get real……

And, you better find better suppliers, as Andy Carnegie once said, he was only as good as the people around him.

As for your cost of 3.00 per pound, its meaningless unless we know the circumstances on the order, how intricate the items were, and how many.

I just got sheets of AR400 cut into 8″ strips for 96 cents a pound, and I plan on using the drops for pistol, and long range rifle targets. I have the scar from the jacket of a 7.62 x 39 steel core that bounced back, and buried itself in my upper left bicep that taught me MY lesson about shooting rifle rounds at steel under 50 yards.

One of my acquaintances had the penetrator from a 30 06 AP round pass through his outer left arm after shooting into a pile of junk at somewhat close range, luckily, it was just through the outermost skin, and not muscle, but two feet to the left, and he was probably proof of Darwins theories.

And, the Korea Vet, whose archery sight I was TIG welding, who had one eye missing from a sniper shot, pulled out the pictures of his best friend who died when he shot his Garand into a steel door on a bunker in Korea, and was hit with the ricocheting core, finally made the lesson really sink in.

I for one, never plan on shooting rifle targets at anything under 100 yards, and then, maybe, as long as they are swingers.

I do know the AR400 is softer, which, I believe may actually help prevent ricocheting by allowing the plates to absorb more impact energy, through deformation. And, I would actually recommend the AR400 for that reason alone. I don’t see a benefit from saving a few bucks, by making a more dangerous product. Replace the damn things once in a while, and it may save a life.

AS for the Wally targets, I have a set, bought to use for one weekend at camp, with a 22LR. They worked fine, and still are fine, they look good next to the rifle rack, and thats as much as I expected for a whim.

Hell, nobody retail sells ANYTHING thats built to last any more, if it was rated for pistol, I would use it for rimfire, and buy the rifle targets for pistol caliber, because I know, they are all putting out as cheap as possible products anymore, and, as PT barnum once said…………and as this article proves to be correct.

  • Jim August 6, 2012, 11:17 am

You get what you pay for. Steel targets for rifle fire must be made from
AR500 steel and shot no closer than 100 yards. MGM Targets are the
best! Never closer than 15 yards for handgun and rimfire. Keep those
    glasses on!

  • Steve August 6, 2012, 7:32 am

Hey Dean…Be carefull you dont fall of that soapbox your preaching from…….Ill bet your known as ….”Oh HE who MUST be listened to!”

  • Ken August 3, 2012, 12:20 am

Just got a dueling target from Action Target – made h** for stout and does exactly what it’s advertised to do. Also have an auto-reset .22 target I bought from Cabelas a while back – as long as you use it as recommended (nothing bigger than a .22) it works fine. But I can tell you – a .17 HMR goes thru it like a hot knife. So, I just buy good goods from local merchants – if it breaks, they make it good.

  • Bill July 31, 2012, 6:54 pm

I loved the article and had to laugh. Read all the comments and thought how stupid are we! Guns are for real — not toys, so why are we shooting toys? These thing give gun hatters ammo to target us. Steel toys can (and do) split bullets, splatter and many other bad things but there miss use (i.e. Using a .308 rifle on a 9MM to 30-06 target — .308 is larger than .306 // setting up in your back yard // setting up at 40 yards // etc.) gives gun bashers more reason to control and/or prohibit their use. Wal-mart like every other store is out to make money for their owners. They will drop contracts and re-call bad goods and will only sell what people will buy. They buy China brands because you do. Want to bash the real target — look in the mirror. Get over yourselves and become part of the solution and protest/attack Congress, Obama, and Clinton — they real enemy that is destroying your right to own and use weapons, interfering with free market and generally the destruction of your rights.

I’m pretty sure that .30-06 is slightly hotter out of the barrel but loses V faster than the .308.
I would still consider them comparable.

got some good news there are some good USA targets out there , I drive truck (big-rig), ATK-Outers in Onalaska WI is shuting down , or moving, there web page says Closeing , however, I just took a truck load of gun stuff and factory equipment to ATK-Blackhawk in Manhattan MT,(near Yellow-stone, Bozeman MT) in my trailor were some molds for self-sealing targets like the “GONG” and others, do a web search for ATK BlackHalwk (they own alot of other names too) I had some Gun-slick stuff, weaver stuff , and others that they carry (or own ?) there was some RCBS stuff going to CA. (but I wont go there ) I know first hand that self sealing targets will be made in Montana USA ! as for steel. Ive but 7mm WSM. through 1/2 plow steel at 100 yards (160 SPBT) and saw a 338 lp mag go through that steel and the rail-road tie it was hanging from ! ferm beleaver in over kill !!!!!!!!! LOL

    • High School Grad September 17, 2012, 11:55 am

One look at the quality of the writing skills of the writers of these comments, shows precisely why America is in the shape it is. Perhaps Microsoft is to blame for not educating people as to what that little red squiggly line really means. We need to start taking responsibility for ourselves. Wal-Mart exists because ‘we the people’ are so greedy that ten cents saved will cause us to grab mindlessly anything that is put in front of us. One commenter referred to what ‘consumers could afford’. We need to stop being consumers only and start producing!

Another wrote that he drove an hour away to his Wal-Mart and then proceeded to brag about how much other money he spent while there. Why not spend that money at home? The reason there probably aren’t the resources in the town in which he lives, is because of people like him who drive an hour to save a buck (or a hundred). This is just a microcosm of the nation-wide problem. We are also sending all our money overseas, while hurting our own economy, BECAUSE WE ARE GREEDY. I just ordered a picatinny rail from my local gun shop. It will cost me $15 by the time it gets here. I could’ve bought it from Amazon for $8 (with free shipping). If a hundred million gun owners, and three hundred million other “consumers” would follow suit, we would soon have zero unemployment and a balanced budget. However, we would also have to, (Oh my God) not buy every piece of crap that the advertisers tell us to. I hold no illusions about the effectiveness of this, but it made me feel better.

P.S. to anyone who finds a spelling or grammatical error in my post, read the one I’m replying to …….and bite me!

      • W.B. Hobbs October 22, 2012, 11:05 pm

        Excellent spelling and grammatical skills.

Let me see if I understand. If we simply doubled the amount we pay for everything (almost), we can eliminate unemployment and balance the budget. Would you have each of us survive with one half (almost) of what we have now? Or do you assume that the higher prices we are paying for everything will result in a doubling (almost) of pay so that we all afford buying exactly what we did before, just a twice (almost) the price? How either option would solve anything is not clear.

I think the correct logic would say that we all should have the freedom to spend our own hard earned dollars as we see fit. If I want to spend 3 bucks for a pair of socks that I expect to last 6 months, or buy a pair of 10 dollar socks that I expect to last a year, I get that choice. I determine that I prefer the price/quality relationship of one product over the other. I get to choose. You get to choose. Collectively we vote with our dollars to determine who most effectively meets our needs and desires.

The problem is that if an American worker costs $100 per hour fully loaded with health care, dental care, life insurance, pensions, social security, OSHA required equipment, child care, taxes, maternity leave, etc., etc. and a Chinese worker costs $20 per hour; the American must be 5 times as productive in order to match the Chinese worker. We have a hard time competing. For years, after most of the world was bombed back into the middle ages, America had it easy. As other countries have rebuilt infrastructure and educated their children so that they perform on a higher plane, we have fallen behind. We can cut our wages, we can increase our performance, or we can watch our industry continue to leave our country.

If we want to solve the debt problem, or employ more people, we have to provide a better product for the money.

        • althomps November 16, 2012, 6:07 pm

Okay, my two cents (too,to or is that a short dress worn in ???) or whatever 2 cents is worth these days requires that I show you another side of the problem.
If we all start spending $10 for socks that last and are made here instead of $3 made elsewhere and wear out rapidly,we have a major problem. The stores employing all those underpaid sales people will have to lay them of. If products last forever we don’t need new ones and therefore don’t need anyone selling them to us. Ergo, not only do the employees go away but so do all the ads during two and 1/2 men and of course the ad execs. What we gain in productivity will be lost in new and extended unemployment benifits. So, the simple solution is to abort the fetuses of any parents who can’t spell benefits (check the first word in that line)or who don’t know the difference between of and off. I need to be careful as my tongue is in my cheek and I almost bit it!

          • barbil December 10, 2012, 8:08 am

Your credibility was shot to hell as soon as I read “What we gain in productivity will be lost in new and extended unemployment benifits.” Then in the very next sentence, you make an outrageous statement about aborting fetuses of parents that can’t spell the exact word you just misspelled! HAHAHA!!!!

            You morons crack me up.

  • jaybrod July 26, 2012, 2:48 pm

I used this target with my bushmaster .223 it only held up to about 10 rnds at 100 yrds before it blew apart. I think I could have built something that have worked much better for half the price.

  • pete napolitano July 26, 2012, 8:37 am

I’m old and metal targets are heavy . I buy ‘ Great Value ‘ 10 ” paper plates in a 300 pack for next to nothing . If there’s a better deal anywhere I haven’t seen it . I spend all the money I save on ammo , more bang for the buck .

I do believe that when Wallmart and Home Depot combine forces in the future they will try to take over the world . Stockpile weapons and ammo now ! You guys are great . Thanks for the entertainment .

People. Your local welding shops may not have clue about target steel. We found that most of our steel suppliers didn’t have a clue about what we were asking for. The steel is called AR500, or a variation of, like Mil Spec 46100. These steels have a Brinell hardness of 490 to 525, and will not work harden from the constant pounding. These steels will work for calibers up to 50BMG, and this is for one hit in the same place only. A second strike (of 50 BMG) on the same spot, and she is going through, unless you are going to buy something several inches thick. You better get your check book out, and be prepared. We were paying $3.00 a pound, for plate that was pre cut into shapes, it adds up fast. Armour plate steel (46100) was intended to preserve the life of the occupant of the vehicle, but only to a point.
If you are shooting at anything that is not flat, and angled properly, you are running a huge risk of catching a slug in the kisser. For what it is worth damaged steel targets, pock marks, and bent from constant pounding is quite dangerous too. Use your heads out there, and be safe, or consult somebody that knows what they are doing.

  • Kevin O July 25, 2012, 11:49 pm

These are junk targets, Only 4 hits from a .223 and crack! Go to your local machine shop and for about 40 bucks or a case of beer, have the welder make you a target. My local guy made me an awesome setup for little to nothing… all scrap parts but works for me, handles EVERYthing I’ve shot at it so far. Thanks Tony!!

  • Dave July 25, 2012, 7:53 am

    Thanks for the review.

  • Jay O July 24, 2012, 10:00 pm

I seen them my self, luckily I took it out of the box and seen that the metal was poor for shooting at, so I went home and looked at my scrap metal pile, and made my own, but on the other three I did go to the local scrap yard and bought me more scrap to make more, and I still came out cheaper.

  • Scott Seamans, Benefactor Life Member July 24, 2012, 3:28 pm

Save your money and go to a welder in your locale… Buy the cheapy for a design only!!!

Your LOCAL welder will make you a target with high carbon, American “Plow Steel”, the same steel used for metallic silhouettes. Shoot at it with any caliber you desire. The target will have limits (.50 BMG – Get Real!), be quality American made and the money will stay at HOME. Just use a little Amerrrcan common sense!

  • Gerald July 24, 2012, 12:30 pm

I buy almost all my ammo (American made) at Wal-Mart. Better prices than the gun shows, and even after taxes, cheaper than buying online. All you flag-wavers need to lighten-up and direct your well-inted energy elsewhere.

    • Greg September 3, 2012, 6:59 am

You are so lucky that there are “flagwavers” in your midst. Without us, you would be speaking Japanese, German or Farsi.

      • althomps November 16, 2012, 5:53 pm

I am by no means a flag waver yet I enlisted in 1965. By the time Nixon was reinaugerated(1972) I was marching in D.C. and protesting. Since you would seem to be a flag waver tell me just how “free” do you think you have made us?
For Scott Seamens– I agree about going to your local welder but as someone who dose some welding and fabricating I must agree with an earlier post addressing the quality of modern steel. A lot of imported steel has “hot spots” where welds don’t stick or end up breaking away. It is difficult to find good clean mild steel these days.
One more for the O bama basher. I don’t like Obama but thank god Romney did not get in. I could never support anyone who hid his millions overseas to avoid taxes yet made those millions by selling out american jobs while wearing an american flag in his lapel. I’d bet that Washington, Jefferson, and the gang would have strung him up as a traitor. By the way, they also said that supporting your country did NOT mean you had to support the government.

  • VOS July 24, 2012, 11:28 am

Alot of the shock expressed seems to come from an underappreciation of the destructive force of small arms fire. I’ve shot a bit of steel and some cast iron too, (brake discs, busted up with pure lead bullets from a Ruger Old Army loaded hot), and steel that will hold up to hits from high velocity jacketed bullets is very special stuff. Expect to pay a pretty penny for a chunk of metal that will take much of a beating. Tough steel will probably crater, (if not fully penetrated), harder steel may very well break. The solution to those problems have kept metalurgists busy for hundreds of years.

  • Bill Plemitscher July 24, 2012, 8:06 am

Thanks for the frank review. I don’t have any of these spinners, but I am a satisfied user of Do-All’s .22 “Bullet-Box” trap (it stops the bullets), so not all of their products are bad.

  • Dean Rothermel July 24, 2012, 5:40 am

Thank you for exposing a poorly made, and marketed product. It could have been something lost in translation, or a oversite in printing the boxes, but generaly you get what you pay for with cheap targets. Having owned a target company for several years, I know it was a dilema for us to try to compete with mass produced products. Anything designed to be shot at is subject to failure, esp if the shooter “trys to see what his gun will do”. Most shooters, unless pryor educated, have no clue about steel, and it’s construction. I have encountered a number of people that think because it’s made of steel it ought to be able to take anything.

  • Joe July 24, 2012, 5:00 am

A lot has been said about how Walmart sells. Let me say a little about the way Walmart buys. Almost everyproduct they sell from ammo to doll dresses. The specifications for materials, construction and packaging is specified in Walmart’s contract. The buyers are not payed for purchasing the best quality product for their shelvs. They are payed for purchasing something that looks like a product being offered for sale in stores across the USA but is not necessary made in the same country, with the same materials, by workers with the same skill sets. As long as it looks a lot like what the customer is buying in other stores and Walmart can sell it a lot cheapper aand make a TON of money doing it. they know most Walmart customers won’t take Any thing back for a refund. If they do, Walmart drops the product line. Walmart are as a hole unchecked, undisiplined and unprincipiled business men at their worst. We get what we pay for.

  • LARRY LABIT July 24, 2012, 3:53 am

Today i bought a lamp from WALLYWORLD, now i have to wonder how long it will last.!!!!

    • VOS July 24, 2012, 11:12 am

Well, I wouldn’t shoot it with anything bigger than a .460 Weatherby!

  • Jeff Phelps July 23, 2012, 7:33 pm

Birchwood Casey makes some decent targets and they are realistically rated. They sell a .44 caliber target that handles .44 magnum rounds. I’ve had one for years and although the stand on mine is broken from a friend firing a .223 and hitting it the target is still functional and will handle my .44 magnum revolver. It’s 3/8″ steel and it’s a good grade of steel. I’d suggest anyone looking for a steel target look there. Prices for the target I have are around $45.

  • DAVID July 23, 2012, 7:28 pm

There are no spinning targets that can handle .308 or 30.06. Even 5.56. Crap Mart or otherwise. We make hanging steels out of 1/2″ boiler plate and unless your banging soft points at 100 yrds they are destroyed in no time. Did you really think that little piece of crap could take that kind of impact? Shooting FMJ too I’ll bet. Come on boy’s…

    • Administrator July 23, 2012, 7:33 pm

We have action target that can handle a 50 bmg

      • Muhjesbud August 14, 2012, 5:59 am

Yeah? What is it, a piece of the side of Tank? How much does it cost? Your comment just flashed me to when an enemy 51 bmg went through and through our supposedly ‘Armored’ personnel Carrier? Lucky no one was in it at the time as the shrapnel splatter A on the inside would have done a lot of damage. And the round wasn’t even AP. AK bullets also penetrated the 2″ thick ‘armor’ about an inch into it. Maybe the APC was made in China? There ARE serious differences in steel. I have a 2×3 foot in size but only half inch thick steel that stops ss109 green tip. I found it on an industrial site somewhere and its heavy in weight but pretty impressive. I couldn’t find out what it was used for but it sure would work well as vehicle armor, but you can’t expect Chinese targets to be that good for such a cheap price.

    • Joe Grine November 26, 2012, 1:13 am

The Cawdwell Gong will handle .308 Win (168 Grain BTHP) without any issues. Doesn’t even make a dent.

  • Gary Johnston July 23, 2012, 6:16 pm

I have 1 and it works fine for my .22’s at any range,,,,got it at Gander Mountain,,,,would not try any other cal. as they are rather cheap looking!!

    • Matt December 21, 2012, 7:52 pm

Ya, but no point buying a spinning target for a .22. I bet it doesn’t spin or move much when hit with it.
Good negative review. The annoyance of returning crap at Walmart isn’t worth the “savings.” Cabelas is about as bad. They have decent hunting clothing, but their name is starting to be associated with junk quality, off brand crap, primarily made in China. Klim and stuff like that is decent, but if it has Cabela’s signature on it I go the other way: it translates as cheap and made in China.

  • Red July 23, 2012, 3:10 pm

I did a job in China at a steel mill and all I can say is their steel quality is a joke. It not only is poor material but they don’t have any control over the mix of ingredients that goes into making the steel. Bad news for anyone buying a steel product made there.
As for WallMart, they have a lot of US made products as well as foreign stuff. And they have the best customer service of any retailer.

  • Tex July 23, 2012, 2:05 pm

LOL, yep. POS! I bought mine from Cabelas. 9mm to 30.06. I had my friends out for some BBQ and shooting and thought I would guy one of their three target self standing ones. What a joke. Now I only had it about 40 yards, but we were shooting everything from .22’s .380’s 9mm’s a 45 to my M4 with .223 hollow points. I new the speed of the .223 would be a stretch, but I had no idea it would go THROUGH IT! Even the .45 at 40 yards had crazy penetration. I would not shoot or suggest even using this product. The metal is too soft for targets.

  • Frederick July 23, 2012, 1:33 pm

Here we go again. Attacking pro gun retailers. Attack the manufacturer, not the retailer. I realize many folks are very anti capitalism, you know the system that made America great, but let us attack Walmart for being very American even as they sell Chinese products. Let us attack every retailer or board and auction that sells any Chinese products then.

Let’s be consistent. I think we will find Walmart attacked more often for their stand on Unions, than their products. Shall we attack Guns America for selling Chinese firearms?

    Go figure.

“The problem with Socialism, is that you eventually run out of other peoples money.” — Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

    • Administrator July 23, 2012, 2:31 pm

It isn’t an attack you moron. It is a bad product.

      • densbusa July 24, 2012, 5:21 am

But its not a Walmart product.
Walmart stocks it for the people who want to
purchase the less expensive products. People on a budget. Walmart is providing a product. These products are also sold elsewhere why just bash Walmart.
If your shooting a 30-06 you really ought to know better anyway. You’ve felt the kick.

      • steve K December 3, 2012, 5:29 pm

well said need more of that feed

  • Kamikaze Cowboy July 23, 2012, 1:20 pm

LMAO gotta love the P.O.S things. Shot the resetting model at 100 yards with a 223 remington soft points had nearly complete penatration with every hit. Upside the paint stayed on ours but had 30+ holes in the paddles . Sturdiest part is the frame, ours took several hits with no penatration

  • Lewis Parsons July 23, 2012, 1:04 pm

I have the good stuff made here in the U.S of A and so far so good.I have to hit with some spray paint, but dothing else.I have bought some bad stuff that was made in the U.S.A and it turned out like this cheaper crap from someplace else.I hate buying anything from wlly world.I know it will more than likely turn out to be crap.My wife and I used to have an ffl until clinton got in.I will never own a winchester gun.We got in 11 of their guns and everyone of them had to go back to tinchester for repair.Plus we lost money on selling that crap.We droped wnichester all together. To this day I will not own one for myself.I stay with MARLIN.Anyway thank you for the heads up on more cheap wally world crap. There really isn’t any buy american do to the co. still buy 98% of material from anthere country.Even the steel may come from the japs.

  • Steve Koski July 23, 2012, 12:47 pm

Negative reviews are very useful to the reader, but may can be harmful to the reviewer in landing additional free products to review.

  • william July 23, 2012, 12:45 pm

thanks for the info. my comment – i purchased one on sale. it works for my air rifle. so now i know i can take down a 1/8 inch target at 100 yards. can’t wait for target season to open.

  • LadyGunfighter July 23, 2012, 12:33 pm

Greetings fellow shooters. Although these targets are on the cheap side you must keep in mind to not shoot any steel target with mega power bullets! I’m a Cowboy Action Shooter and we only use steel targets with lead, round nose soft bullets, that’s all these are meant for! My hubby made some steel targets at work, we set them out 100 yards and I put a hole in it with my .45/70 with said soft lead/round nose bullets. These were not meant for .44 Mags or jacketed. There are some wonderful Steel target makers out there in Cowboy land and it is much more satisfying hearing that ping. But you still need to be careful of back splatter, ricochet and breaking targets with the higher powered loads. Off soap box.

  • Dennis G Bouscal July 23, 2012, 10:38 am

” . . . the boxes being sold to unwitting Wal-Mart customers.” I don’t believe there are any other kind.
    Thanks for the review.

  • JIm July 23, 2012, 10:34 am

Actually I wish you had a lot more negative reviews.. What better place to warn consumers about bad gun products

  • Gerry July 23, 2012, 10:06 am

Great article. We should go buy these from WalMart, shoot them until they break and then take them back for a full refund. It won’t take WalMart very long to cancel that contract!!

  • MWKeith July 23, 2012, 9:58 am

Have not bought one of these swingers but from the pictures of the broken examples it is obviously a heat treating – annealing – alloy material QC defect, exactly the kind common to cheap and dirty manufacturing. There is a remote possibility that an anneal at the likely fracture location would reduce the brittleness defect. Use a butane or better torch or electric arc welder carefully. Actually, once the top target breaks off it should swing better. You can judge your skill by the strike mark.

  • Barbara Baird July 23, 2012, 8:22 am

Sometimes honesty includes constructive criticism. Well done and thanks for alerting us to this shoddy workmanship. I can say the same thing for the standard archery foam block that Walmart sells. Save your money. Had to take mine back as it just came apart after a few arrows hit it. Gotta say, though … pithy headline.

  • Kenneth Rupkalvis July 23, 2012, 7:49 am

I bought one at Academy for use with my muzzle loading rifles. Mine has survived my .54 just fine at 50 and 100 yards. I suspect the swinger survived because of the soft lead roundball. I haven’t shot it with a centerfire rifle and after reading this article I won’t. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Jim July 23, 2012, 7:31 am

“We don’t usually have a lot of negative reviews here at GunsAmerica Magazine. There is no point in them generally.”

I guess this review shows that there IS a point in providing negative info about bad products.

    • Targe August 6, 2012, 10:42 am

“We don’t usually have a lot of negative reviews here at GunsAmerica Magazine. There is no point in them generally.”

I’d think that a better service would be to review the ‘popular’ products and print the results regardless of good, bad, or indifferent. Otherwise, are readers of GAM supposed to infer that any product that has not been reviewed is due to it being an inferior product that would necessitate a “negative review”? That’s ‘unfair’ on many levels:
      – unfair to good quality quality products that simply haven’t been reviewed YET
      – unfair to buyers who may be considering a ‘popular’ (or not) product but don’t know if it’s not been reviewed YET or won’t be reviewed because it would be a “negative review”.

I find it hard to appreciate either the logic or the value of such a policy.

  • edie50 July 23, 2012, 7:18 am

America – stop being a fool – stop buying cheap chinese goods. They are inferior to goods made in the USA. The chinese just want to take away money from the US and bring it to China.

    • DAVID July 27, 2012, 1:19 pm

and taking that money-to build their military……

  • WL Whatley July 23, 2012, 7:17 am

Well, I gotta go against the flow…a little bit. I have one of these targets (the yellow box, lower left corner of pic #4) with two ducky swingers, in my basement for my air rifle range. It works well!! It was a gift, but I believe it was purchased at wallyworld.

I, too, have a problem with Chinese made goods, especially computer hardware AND software. “Backdoors” have been found in a bunch of these that would let anyone with the knowledge and key do whatever they want (shut down, retrieve info & email, monitor traffic) with your computer. Sounds like industrial (with the potential for government and military) espionage. Make no mistake, this is a struggle for control that they are desperate to win, and they have no problem using whatever means available to whip our lazy, obese, candy, naive, couch-potato butts. And they probably will, unless they succumb to the same ills that are getting us first!!

    • tarcher July 29, 2012, 8:24 am

Now You got me wondering…. I started to look for a new cc weapon, every time I logged into one of these sites my laptop would shut down… Wonder if there’s a connection???
As for Walmart… I only purchase there if I need something in an emergency. I always patronize locally owned businesses. I may pay a little more but I help keep them open and their employees working.

      • John November 12, 2012, 6:31 pm

Because the workers at Walmart don’t deserve a job or what?

I buy from Walmart and other discount stores because I need to support MY family.
If the local businesses can’t hack it by adapting their business plan, they deserve to go under.

When our Walmart opened here years ago, the tire shops were all bawling like little babies.
Well here comes Walmart with their screwed up oil changes and no ability to do alignments.

Two shops oped up just to handle alignments. No businesses went under, they adapted by selling items Walmart didn’t.

I was an FFL at the time, I dropped the cheap .22’s and hunting rifles that Walmart was selling and stocked up on handguns and EBR’s. I stocked ammo buy the case. Started offering free mounting and bore sighting with a scope purchase.
I didn’t go out of business, I was not so stubborn to refuse to change like the old timey mom and pops.

    • Muhjesbud August 14, 2012, 6:14 am

Yeah, WL, you just docked at the pier at the tip of the iceburg. If you think the UN gun treaty is scary, wait till everybody learns just how badly they want to ‘control’ the internet. And to what extent ‘they’ have already succeeded. England is currently trying to pass a law that gives their government free access to everything anybody does on the internet. EVERYTHING! All your emails, searches, EVERYTHING! And it will all go in data banks for ‘future’ reference, in that new NSA facility under construction in Utah. Privacy is just about all gone on the world wide web. But we don’t care, right? Pass me another cheeto, my ass is too comfortable on the couch to change positions. And don’t interupt me talking about ‘rights’ when i’m watching two and a half men, reruns.

  • Spencer Adsit July 23, 2012, 7:03 am

I do not love WalMart, or own any stock, but I get tired of the new national pasttime of badmouthing them. They do not manufacture anything. They carry cheap stuff because that is what 99.9% of people want. And I will give them credit, if you have a problem they will give you your money back with less hassle than almost anywhere else. Amazon is also very good about handling returns – including shipping. So quit foaming at the mouth and get on with life. As to China taking over – look to Washington as the source of that problem. And guess who elected those idiots?

    • Mitch Barkett July 23, 2012, 1:24 pm

I agree. Wal-Mart is a good place to do business and their return policy is the best. They don’t make the goods. Their ammo pricing can’t be beat.

      • Muhjesbud August 14, 2012, 5:15 am

Exactly, the problem with these forums is that they attract ‘whiners’ and crybabies and sissyboy girlymen like flys on a dead horse. Sears was the first store to inport stuff from China and Japan back when it all started with transister radios. Then came Walmart who just ‘did it’ better. When populations explode, everything changes in a globalist society. The sellers at the gunshows around here buy their ammo from Walmart and add a couple bucks to the price on their tables. Every retailer sells the same stuff. Custom U.S. made stuff is just too expensive for the average consumer. And when you have ‘cheaper’ products, you have to expect cheaper performance. Shooting ANYTHING with a high powered rifle round ain’t gonna last very long anyway!
Lets all grow up and quit mewling like a pusilanimous dog without a bone. Walmart is much better than our politicans. At least they provide jobs.

        • Robert September 26, 2012, 9:04 pm

Yeah provide jobs for cents an hour to Chinese worker slaves surrounded by armed guards in towers like
          Myth Romney’s corporate friends do.

          • Cycle October 15, 2012, 5:16 pm

SOOOOooo you think OH’Bammer’s better ?
We can’t stand another four (4) years of that idiot and his idiot cronies (doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results) !

        • steve K December 3, 2012, 5:00 pm

yes they do provide jobs may be many in many other countries and do provide jobs in the USA maybe 1 for every 10 the gave away look at your neighbor who is out of work . Sam Walton created Walmart to sell American made products for the American markets until Wall St. took over
and “out sourced manufacturing jobs that provided income to pay for goods made here.”
What people really want is American made goods and plenty of money to pay for it ,but as long as
Wall St. gets the Gold mine all we will get is the shaft !
Roosevelt ,one year before he was assassinated by American Nazis backers planed a second bill of rights which mandated homes ,health care ,jobs ,education for all ….
Capitalists with control over money production say “it takes money to make money” but that
U.S. constitutional enshrined power has been abdicated to secret society globalist banksters 100 years ago .
Eat them or they will eat you your children and your grandchildren , they are parasidical predators .

The rumor is that JFK got his bullet because he was preparing to put the FRB out of business. Constitutionally, the FRB is illegal … but that’s not what this thread is about.

I’m new here … what would it take to make GOOD steel targets and how much would you be willing to pay for targets made to that spec?

I’d be willing to make some “last forever” ones if I could find buyers of “last forever” targets.

    • Trebor November 12, 2012, 5:08 am

      Ultra well said Spencer!

  • Steve July 23, 2012, 6:08 am

Serves you all right for shopping Satanmart in the first place. The cheapest isn’t always the best

    • Jeremy October 15, 2012, 9:45 am

Why the hate on Walmart? Places like Cabelas, Rural King, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Dicks, and Dunhams sell these same targets as well as numerous other imported products and compete with small “local” businesses, yet you don’t seem to have a problem with them???

      • JS December 12, 2012, 11:36 am

That’s a damn good point Jeremy. Well put.

  • Phil S. McKracken July 23, 2012, 5:53 am

When are people gonna finally wake-the-hell-up and STOP buying from freaking WALMART!!?!??!?
They are THE single-biggest purchaser of CHINESE-MADE products IN THE WORLD.
When they roll into a town, the existing small business(es) are being steam-rolled to the curb, simply because they have huge price-fixed buying agreements with CHINESE companies that make crap.
You want to save a lousy buck and a half,or do you want to be able to support your family?

    • Eric July 23, 2012, 7:08 am

It seems your comment is a little jaded. I live in a small town the closest Wal-Mart is an hour drive away. There is but one business in town that would compete with Wal-Mart if it was in town. The rest of the shops are specialty shops that would not compete. However, when I go out of town to make a “Wal-Mart run” I visit the other businesses in that town. I have purchased furniture, autos, home improvement products, clothing, music instruments, and electronics in the same town as the Wal-Mart is located. I usually eat at a resturant while there also. Wal-Mart is an asset to the other local businesses not a liability. As for the targets that are the subject of the article, you get what you pay for.

      • Trebor November 12, 2012, 5:04 am

Now there you go Eric, that is telling it like it is, was and will be! I like your style!

    • Ryan July 28, 2012, 12:01 am

funny , are Walmart sells Colt AR’s DPMS ARs, Bushmaster ,, ect ect ect just read the box befor you buy ! like there Remington tree-stands “made in China !!” (remington + china ?) same with most of there knifes , but they do sell Buck Knifes too made in USA. and do as I do , find a sales person and tell them “I almost bought that, then I read the box and put it back “

      • Trebor November 12, 2012, 5:06 am

Well said Ryan! Read the labels and know your manufacturing flaw groups!

    • Targe August 6, 2012, 10:37 am

If I buy a Black and Decker Drill it’s still made in China whether I buy it at WalMart, Sears or the “Mom and Pop” owned True Value store in town.

WalMart offers all of the same products as any other large retailer and more than most smaller retailers.

    • Jim September 4, 2012, 1:15 pm

Right on target Phil. I use Wal-Mart for some stuff, but for things that matter no way! As a small business owner I agree with your comment about how Wally-World hurts local businesses. Support your local people even if it cost a couple of bucks more. It pays dividends in the community.

  • Robert July 23, 2012, 5:49 am

I bought the same one from WalMart and mine broke on the 4th round of 44 Mag . It definitely cannot handle the rifle rounds listed on the package.

    • Trebor November 12, 2012, 5:00 am

My goodness what did you expect from the use of a .44 cal mag.!” The strongest handgun made, so make my day punk”! What a pistol, and what a man! We may have lost the Duke but ole Clint stepped right up and takes charge!

  • Jay July 23, 2012, 4:26 am

I have a couple Do-All .22 targets (from Cabela’s if it makes a difference) and they work as advertised. I have even shot them closer than recommended without cratering or breaking. A .30 carbine round will make a neat hole however.

  • T Ward July 23, 2012, 4:25 am

In the above, I meant to say, “there’s no QA”. sorry for the bad editing.

  • T Ward July 23, 2012, 4:22 am

They have them at Academy too. It’s tough to find much of a selection of US-made products anywhere. The product is easy to spot if it’s on the shelf, because “Made in USA” is displayed loud and proud somewhere on the packaging, as this has become part of the advertising for those manufacturers and suppliers who are picking up on the facts that a) US products are superior, and b) consumers are demanding the better-made products and are willing to pay a little more for them. If it’s made somewhere else, this disclosure is either very tiny, or it’s somewhere on the inside of the packaging. Because suppliers – and I’m talking about name-brand stuff – are either embarrassed, afraid of not moving their product, or both. And yeah, I find that the US-made stuff is usually pricier. In the long run it’s worth it. Here is where I became completely sold: I work in an industry that uses heavy equipment. Blueprints for this equipment are sold overseas and the manufacturing (and jobs) is farmed out. But, overseas, there may be say, 3 plants that are building the product. In these countries, turnover is tremendous and there is no graduated advancement that is based on improved skill sets. Like, no apprentise, journeyman, master designations – the workers do not have these skill sets. Also, there’s QA, so specs are out of tolerance, and are inconsistent across the 3 of these plants. The metal alloys used are are of the cheapest, literally, and poorest quality. This equipment lasts from 1/4 to 1/2 of the time of US-built stuff and even then has an insatiable appetite for after market parts and mechanic time during its much shorter lifespan. It’s cheaper to buy the US stuff even at twice the cost on the front end. So, I avoid all things China, and other countries and have done without even. It’s like eating organic – it’s good for you and if we all do it, we clean up our own side of the street and the demand will cause progressive measures in supply that will bring the price down eventually. And everyone benefits – even overseas competitors because if they want to compete, they have to improve quality.

Thanks for the review and keep reviews like this coming. I was thinking about buying a rimfire and centerfire steel targets from the do-all product line. it’s now apparent why they seemed cheaper than other offerings. I definitely won’t pick them up. Heck, I didn’t even know they weren’t American made. I’m surprised Cabellas is offering them.

  • jtf July 16, 2012, 9:37 am

    Thanks for the review

  • LMO61 July 16, 2012, 8:49 am

Unfortunately, even Cabela’s has this at quite a bump-up in price compared to Wal-Mart and Rural King. I bought one and used 30-06 @ 100 yrds. Also fired the 7.62X39 FMJ at it. The breakage I experienced was he frame support bushing shattered as it is a cast pot metal. I thought I would repair frame but now I believe I will just make an attempt at getting my money back. Thanks for the heads up.

  • L. Michaels July 15, 2012, 9:59 pm

Rather than trying to return them to the company, take them back to Wal-Mart. I was told by an assistant manager that they have to personally honor all warranties in house. If they receive enough of them back they’ll eventually take them off the shelves.

    • wayne F September 6, 2012, 12:16 am

As soon as I seen this target’s I knew they were for 22 rimfire and never even thought of using anything bigger, but even a 22 LR 30 grain Agulia ammo is to much for these. Maybe a BB gun or pellet rifle will be O.K

    • Trebor November 12, 2012, 4:55 am

Kind of difficult for Walton ville to refuse to honor the product warranteed or not! They have the motto ‘Satisfaction Guaranteed or your money back”! It is posted on all Wally world walls somewhere usually in the front of the store! They are excellent for this ad this is why I continure t shop with them regardless of their tiny flaw of The American made matra a while back tha they really did not come through on!

      • Larry November 10, 2014, 12:21 pm

I can remember when Walmart used to advertise that 100% of the items that they sold were made in the U.S.A. I suppose that it is true that the only constant is change.

  • Craig July 15, 2012, 7:51 pm

Thanks for the heads up. Was thinking getting some of these. I’m going to foward this to the buyer at Walmart and let him know of the bad quality. Maybe we can get some better quality targets on the shelves.

  • Doug Gisriel July 15, 2012, 5:11 pm

I purchased the 22LR target and after only 20 rounds the weld on the cross-member broke. Very disappointing!

  • Doug williams July 15, 2012, 4:26 pm

Hey Guys thanks for the heads up on this one more poor product from China

  • Eric July 15, 2012, 2:47 pm

I bought this exact same one from Wal-mart the first time I saw them. I shot it with my 9mm, and a 45mm at about 15-20 yards and they also broke on me in the same spot! I just threw them away and vowed to never buy their products again!

    • Liar August 31, 2012, 10:04 pm

YOU ARE A LIAR, YOU CANNOT SHOOT A 45MM AT 20 YARDS, THAT IS A VEHICLE WEAPON

      • Michael September 3, 2012, 3:45 pm

LIAR is a pretty strong word to be using here. He meant .45 cal. not mm. The shape of these targets look to be twisted when hot, if thats the case they were weakened before they were used. If they are cast that way they have no place in this world as a gun target.

      • Trebor November 12, 2012, 4:50 am

Some people are basically stupid and show it when they open their mouths such as Liar! We never would have known how stupid ! But then he had to make his post to Eric! Hell anyone this side of an idiot could figure out that Eric made a simple mistake in his caliber typeing! Eric was merely trying to point out his experience with this shoddy product which he did quite well! I think you handled Liar quite well with your post and congrats!

        • Bob November 22, 2012, 12:44 am

i like how that LIAR guy so blatantly said “you cant shoot a 45MM at 20 yards its a vehicle weapon.” as far as im aware a bullet can be fired from any yardage. Anyways i was using Extreme Shock Air Freedom rounds to fire at some of these targets figuring id give it a whirl with target rounds but alas they as well broke at the twist in the frame which is extremely saddening considering theyre meant for hard targets, i mean hell with the air freedom rounds i can shoot into drywall with relatively low penetration since theyre designed to disintegrate on hard targets. funny thing is i actually went back to walmart and returned the targets under false advertisement pretenses. the round were 45’s just like the original guy was using but like i said air freedom are fragmenting rounds designed to disintegrate on any non organic or soft surface

          • MacTex December 15, 2012, 6:12 pm

You must be getting your Air Freedom rounds a LOT cheaper than I am if you can consistently use them for practice! I own a Campground and carry the Air Freedom rounds to cut down on penetration and richochets around the RVs. But other than testing for function in my carry weapon, and a few in-house tests, I don’t run that many rounds for practice – too dear!

If he were indeed a liar – which he is not, he simply made a mistake – he could endeavor to change. I’m afraid your problems run much deeper so you’ll always be ass.
