One of the more unique products I stumbled upon at SHOT Show 2023 was the new VTLOR Weapon Systems’ “gas-busting” charging handle. With the dramatic rise of suppressor use on semi-auto AR15s, more and more people are experiencing the unpleasant gas blowback attributed to suppressed weapons.

Running a suppressor is notorious for increased back pressure. In turn, this also causes more gasses to be blown back into the action of the system. From here, it exits the upper and lower from anywhere it can. Most of these gasses escape from the ejection port and around the charging handle.

To address this, VTLOR added a rubber seal around the top of the charging handle to help keep any gas from escaping over the top of the charging handle and directly into the shooter’s face.

Rubber seal that mates up to the upper receiver.

Another step they took was adding a bleed-off port to the side of the charging handle. This looks promising for right-handed shooters but troublesome for lefties.

The port directs any escaping gasses down and to the right which helps keep the shooter from breathing these gasses.

The bleed-off port is machined into the right side of the charging handle.

While I was unable to actually shoot with this new charging handle, it looks promising and I like the innovation. VTLOR Weapon Systems said these will be available in around March or so and they have an MSRP of $100.
