Under normal circumstances, surveillance video might capture a small fraction of a life-threatening self-defense situation.
This time, video shows nearly every second of the insane confrontation.
Local media outlets posted a video Saturday from Forest Acres Liquor Store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that shows a heart-stopping, two-minute shootout between a mother, daughter, and a shotgun-wielding robber.
Tina Ring, 53, and her daughter, Ashely Lee, 30, were working behind the counter at the family-owned liquor store Thursday night when a man, who police later identified as Tyrone Lee, entered the front door and demanded the money from behind the cash register.
“I didn’t want him to hurt my daughter,” Ring told the Tulsa World on Friday. “That was my main thought.”
Ashley Lee, who is not related to Tyrone Lee, appears in the video to open the register and the man begins grabbing money. Both women stand back and allow the would-be thief to take as much cash as he could hold.
“All I was thinking was ‘Just give him the money and go,’ and next thing I know, I see him back in my face,” Ring said.
That was his mistake, for as soon as the suspect returned for more cash both women opened fire. They had each grabbed a pistol in the time it took the suspect to return, and they weren’t shy about using them.
“The clerks did an outstanding job of fighting him,” Tulsa Police Sgt. Dave Walker told KJRH.
In the video, Tyrone Lee can be seen re-entering the store while both women crouch behind the counter with their pistols at the ready. Lee checks behind the register, and Ring fires a shot at point-blank range. She fires two additional shots as he flees, and Ashley Lee pulls out her phone and calls the authorities.

After Ring’s initial three shots, Lee turns around and enters the store for the third time. Ring fires another two shots as he approaches, but he continues moving forward even though he has dropped his shotgun.
He lunges at Ring and tries to wrestle her handgun away from her. During the struggle, Ashley Lee fires another shot at the suspect’s back and appears to hit him without injuring her mother.
The suspect wrestles the gun away from Ring, hits her with it, and turns around to fire at Ashley Lee. Fortunately for the woman, Ring’s five-shot revolver is empty and Tyrone Lee fails in his two attempts to shoot her.
The confrontation ends seconds later as the suspect collapses behind the counter and the two women flee the store.
It isn’t clear from the video which shots landed and which didn’t. The suspect continues fighting throughout the tape, and even gets up and leaves the store after the women escape.
Authorities report that the suspect checked himself into a nearby hospital and is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. He is expected to survive.
It’s always easy to “Monday Morning Quarterback” and second guess. Bottomline, the store clerks survived which means they did what was necessary. That does not mean, however, that one cannot learn useful things from analyzing their reactions. The biggest problem was allowing the perp, when he came back, to get physically close to them – put something (a counter, a shelving unit, even a chair) between you and the perp. The best thing about a gun is the ability to engage at a distance – take advantage of that and make sure that you are protecting yourself). Putting yourself into position to be grappled with and disarmed is potentially dangerous and, had “Mom” not unloaded her gun in the perp, he could very well have killed the daughter with it once he took it from the mother. Obviously, they might consider more powerful handguns and/or more potent loads (I favor “RIP” rounds), but even big bullets with expandable tips are not a guarantee of success. This chap appeared to be tripping and it is unlikely that any number of shots, save those critically placed, would have incapacitated him. I watched a guy on PCP survive far more than this, so it’s not necessarily bad shooting on the part of the women that left him still standing and fighting.
Your right it is easy to Monday morning quarterback and since you thought they should use bigger guns, maybe a 50 cal is more to your liking. Internet commandos are a dime a dozen.
Way to go ladies! Just remember “bigger” is “better”; 2 to the chest, one to the head! Then a few more for good measure.
The criminal was really high on dope. Appears he had no fear. Walked right past the round that opened a bleeding wound on him. 9MM and 380 never bothered him. Very, very dangerous criminal! I am happy for the ladies and at the same time, I am sad for them to be making a living that way. I would do all in my power to keep my ladies away from harm’s way.
That said. I laud the ladies, once more. This is the reason why we have the 2nd Amendment and our God given right to defend ourselves from harm. Anyone qualified to own and bear arms should train to do so. Defend what is rightfully yours.

To bad that at least one shot was not fatal. The system will eventually release the dirtbag to repeat the offence on other good citizens. Hope for a fatal shot next time. There will most likely be a next time.

I cringed watching the one shot when the turd was between the girls and the one girl fired at his back. Thankfully she didn’t miss and shoot the other girl as the turd was struggling trying to wrestle the gun away.
The video can’t be found on my screen. Imagine that, YouTube stopped a video showing the proper use of a gun. To protect a life and not a political agenda. Media being manipulated, again again and again.
Only thing I would say to this mother daughter duo is to use a larger caliber. I’m glad they weren’t hurt and he was!

My only complaint is that the young girl grabbed the phone before it was half over and kept talking to 911 operater. Throw the phone down after dialing and take care of business!
This shows one major difference between women and men in a gunfight; if it had been a man “victim”, he would have had a semi-auto handgun with higher capacity AND he would have engaged the perp until DEAD! Two women running a liquor store is a NO-GO!

Can’t know for sure, but this dirtbag seemed to be shouting at the women – angry that he got shot. Typical in our society … perpetrators – and those that defend them – somehow believe THEY are the victims and are being treated unfairly.
Thank God nothing serious happen to the mother and daughter. The lesson for the mother to learn was do not stay close to the criminal so they can grab your gun. It could have been a tragedy for the women. You must stay behind something to protect yourself.

Lots of good lessons learned from this video. Mom and daughter must have had the angels watching over them I counted about 10 times they both should have died. Small caliber pistols are great at the shooting range, but not when you have a pissed of criminal trying to kill you.
Great joh ladies, the only thing that would have been better, is if he had died on the spot. He will recover, get a light sentence and be doing it again when he is released. But still a great job, wonder what things would have been like in the world of Diane feinstein, and bloombug, and Paloosie?
Bigger rounds more capacity
A perfect example for pushback on magazine capacity reduction. They should have had different weapons too. An 8 round 357 revolver or at least a 15 round striker striker fire pistol.
My 8 1/2 inch barrel 44 magnum would have been in his face like a shark out of the water the second he came back behind the counter. I use high powered loads I’ve taken out 2 400-500 lb black bears with and would not hesitate one bit to use it against a twerp like this.

Well ,so much for 9mm and .38 rounds, when they are obviously high on drugs. Why the military still uses them wonders me.
NATO BS with the 9mm. A 147 grain hydroshock would do if you had about 10 extra rounds. You can’t beat a 12 gauge shotgun at close range. I carry either a 357 magnum or a 45 ACP. I really don’t have any desire to harm another person ever, but in a life or death situation I want kenetic energy on my side. I knife with a fixed blade of no less than 4 inches is also a good CQB weapon——No reloading!!!

Some of the comments are from people that have seen too many movies. Even large caliber rounds don’t always drop a guy fast. I have seen 9mm rounds mean little difference in actually slowing down a suspect. With adrenaline flowing, they are lucky they even hit him. I think they did an excellent job. If those young women would have had a .45, they probably wouldn’t have even hit him, then he would have wrestled the gun from them and unloaded it on them. Great result, only better one would been a dead robber, IMHO.
This Mom and Daughter have a lot of guts, for sure. Now they need a little larger caliber for the next A-hole that tries to rob them. Too bad the bastage lived. It’s us paying for his medical care, his lawyers, his eventual incarceration, and no doubt he will be out in just a couple years.
That appears to be a large store. After the initial confrontation where the perpetrator cleans out the cash register and leaves, with a shotgun, no less, there is zero reason to hang around behind the counter where you are trapped. Put distance between you and the bad guy. Have your guns ready. Don’t let him get within arms reach if possible. Get a larger caliber gun with more capacity. Keep shooting (both of you) until he is on the ground. If he comes in to attack physically, get out of the way. Separate if possible. The mother actually went out and confronted him with a virtually empty gun. But, by all means, KEEP SHOOTING UNTIL YOU ARE OUT OF BULLETS AND THEN RELOAD IF YOU CAN.
With a decent semi-auto in 9 mm or 45, they could have had a combined capacity of around 20-30 rounds of JHP, rather than the small pea shooters they had. Even if they only hit him with 25%, that’s 5-8 bullets in the body or head somewhere. Keep moving and keep shooting. Have a second or even a third mag on you. What if there had been two or three robbers rather than just the one? On second thought, get a shotgun too.

Now, for those who want to witness a heavy firefight, look at the shootout in San Francisco, SFPD found a suspect hiding in a parked motor home. They surrounded the vehicle, then the firing ensued, no one states who fired the first round, 69 rounds later (quick fire) it’s over. No one wounded or injured or deceased, WTF? And these are a professional police unit, so, for those of you disparaging those two brave women, who held their ground and stayed in the fight, for their lives, go pound salt! I’m sure they fired with what they trained with at the range, it worked, they stayed in the fight, a larger caliber might’ve had too much recoil to recover, possibly hollow points might be in order for their reload. This proves that without any weapons, we’d be viewing a video of two dead store owners, great job ladies, stay in the fight and train to live!
Am Proud of the girls- tho the dsughter needed to step up and just execute the perp. while was struggling for the gun. He could’ve got her gun and killed them both= it was close but mom showed tough.

Did you notice that when the perp stuck the revolver he had just taken away from the mother over the counter and yanked the trigger, hoping to hit the daughter, there was no flash or report. Mom had already emptied the gun . . . Good show ladies.

Kudos to both of these ladies. A bad guy comes in and sticks a gun in their face. If the robber had not come back after first getting cash all would have been ok. But by now these ladies have armed themselves and it wasn’t textbook shooting and reaction for sure but who knows how you would have reacted. These gals had the will to NOT be a victim and that’s half the battle. I owned and operated C stores for 15 years and I can tell you, when you work 12-14 hours, six and seven days a week, there is not a whole lot of time for the “range”.
I dont think we watched the same video…what i saw was two women who were lucky they survived using guns they clearly werent trained for…more ammo would NOT have made a difference as much as shot placement, cover, better ammunition. People like you need 2 mags of 9mm to accomplish what many of us can with 2-3 bullets…and give the rest of us a bad name because you train poorly and lack discipline…get to the range and get better and plan then it wont matter if she has a revolver or a mag fed pistol.
Easily said Robert IF you have never been there. As a police and corrections Firearms Training Officer I can tell you it is pretty easy when nobody is shooting at you, when you are not under stress, when you are not the mother worrying about the daughter and vice versa. THEN you will find accuracy dropping. Look at the rounds fired even by highly trained police officers. I agree with you regarding tactics used by these ladies. When the thug came back in and approached the one woman she should have fired and never allowed him to get that close. When the thug was wrestling the woman for the gun, that is the time the other woman should have run in to shoot him again. They were fortunate to survive. But if everyone put up a fight like these ladies did crime would go down.
Any gun fight you walk away from is a win. Been in gun fights, frightening. Seen guys shot ten times with 45 cal, walking around. Even talked to a guy who was shot in his head who died later, acted like it was nothing. They did a good job.

Roderick – It is easy to armchair quarterback. Give credit where credit is due. The ladies survived and walked away w/o serious physical injury. It’s seriously different when the target shoots back. I do agree that a higher capacity handgun would have been better, however. Also, it just goes to show just how ineffective handguns are at stopping a threat.

Not meaning any disrespect to any of the other commenters at all, since I don’t presume to know anyone’s background, but unless you’ve been in the situation these ladies were in you really don’t know how you would perform. The bad guy was violently fighting back, and I’m sure they didn’t start their day out thinking they would be in a life-or-death encounter. Firearms training is extremely important, but not more so than the will to fight which both of these ladies obviously had. I commend both of them for staying in the fight for as long as they did. A larger caliber weapon may or may not have made a difference. In many documented gunfights a participant has taken hits from a .45 or whatever and continued their aggression. There are no guaranteed one shot stops from a hand-held weapon. You do the best you can with what you have at hand.

I saw one guy while an MP this guy had been shot 6 times with a 9 mm by local civilian police. This POS had shot his GF between the eyes in front of her kinds then thought he could get away. He was remanded to the authorities on Ft. Hood, Tx. as he was active duty….note the “was” active duty. Doesn’t matter weather you are a trained police officer, or a store owner when the shit hits the fan you do what is necessary to control the situation. Too bad this pos in the video lived, I have seen it though hopped up on pcp, or meth, or whatever it is he was obviously high on. Shoot till the target is no longer moving, if that means both of these girls pumping every bullet they have into the perp then so be it.

Makes a good case for those who oppose higher capacity magazines. We all don’t get one shot one kill as promoted by the folks who want to reduce capacity of magazines. What if that was your mom or sister and she was killed because she ran out of ammo.

Why did they lock him in? Once he had the cash he was headed out. Keeping him in the store escalated the situation and increased the chance that one or both of them could’ve been hurt or killed.

Did you even watch the video? They didn’t lock him in. He exited the store, then came back in. He also exited the second time when the mother was firing at him and came back in again. I wouldn’t want you as the only eye witness to an event. I recommend sharpening your observation skills.

In the case presented above, the thug was Black and is very lucky to still be breathing, but, his actions do not represent all Blacks just like the last 3 mass-shooters, who were White, do not represent all Whites.

The best defense weapon for such confrontation is Taurus Judge with 3.5inch shell, fires 5- 38 caliber shots followed by 16 pallets, all going at 900 F/sec with a Crimson laser site. Need one to the intruders face and one to torso. He won’t be walking out of the store in one piece. Admiration to the mom and daughter team for their performance. Smith and Wesson also make similar gun that shoots 3inch shell with nearly similar performance. These burglars are high on drugs and don’t feel the pain therefore need heavier punishment.

I will address it to say that the guns were not used properly. You fire until the threat is stopped. These two women had compassion for the life of this criminal that the criminal did not share. They were not in the real sense carrying. The guns were, like my grandfather’s was Under the counter. Meant to be there when it was needed.

The ONLY reason he was able to wrestle the gun away was because it was EMPTY……IF it wasn’t empty she would have been able to shoot him as he approached her to get the gun…..Period….But you Leftist Loons decry anybody that needs a gun that holds more than 10 rounds.
I dont think we watched the same video…what i saw was two women who were lucky they survived using guns they clearly werent trained for…more ammo would NOT have made a difference as much as shot placement, cover, better ammunition. People like you need 2 mags of 9mm to accomplish what many of us can with 2-3 bullets…and give the rest of us a bad name because you train poorly and lack discipline…get to the range and get better and plan then it wont matter if she has a revolver or a mag fed pistol.
There was an eternity of time that went by from the last round fired from her gun to him wrestling it from her. If that had been a Glock 19, she would have likely had another 10 rounds on board. Sure she lacked proficiency, but not guts, she would have continued to shoot. I think it turning out the way it did is less likely if she had a different gun.
