A retired Arizona dad was shocked earlier this month when his security camera picked up several young adults pretending to break into his home.

The dad, John Duhigg, is a former violent crime detective, we learn from the Daily Mail. He says the incident was caught on his security cameras and the footage went viral when he posted it on TikTok.

According to his video, he originally discovered that there were several people outside his home around 3 a.m. Newsweek says he discovered a man in his security feed and was “startled” when the man went to cover a camera.

Caught On Security Cameras

Duhigg explained that there is a large gate around his home and that four strangers were standing around it. In his TikTok video, he points out a place in the audio where it appeared one of the intruders racked the slide of a pistol.

At this point, Duhigg went outside “and looked around the corner at the security gate.”

He told Newsweek, “I grabbed my shotgun and headed out to stop them.” He says the men began to bang on the gate before running away.

When examining the footage from this part of the incident Duhigg noticed the placement of the strange men. He told Fox 7, “Four young males between probably 18 and 20, something like that. Three of them were lining up next to the door. One of them was coming up to the door.”

“I’m a retired violent crimes detective.” He continued, “That’s a textbook home invasion. They beat on the door, they get you to answer it, and they overpower you, then they’re in the house.”

The men returned around 10 minutes later but when Duhigg again came outside, they all left. Duhigg called the police and began pulling up old security footage for evidence. This is when he found a third incident that had happened about three hours before.

The men had apparently visited Duhigg’s home three times, footage showed them throwing an “Oreo milkshake” at Duhigg’s truck. Additionally, they egged his truck and sidewalk.

Cyber Bullies Attack Again

Duhigg apparently then woke his son before the police arrived to ask him if he knew anything. Jake Duhigg, at 20 years old, has high-functioning autism and lives with his father. He denied knowing anything and went back to sleep.

But Duhigg says that things just weren’t adding up. He eventually woke Jake again, asking him to come watch the video.

Duhigg said, “I had him look at the video and listen to their voices. As he did, he told me they were a group that had been bullying him online for a month or so for having autism and being Latino. Earlier that day, they told him they were going to come to my house and ‘get’ us.”

Upon further questioning, they learned that the cyber-bullies turned home invaders had pretended to befriend Jake and he had given them his address.

No Accounting For Brains

At that point, police were given enough information to begin searching for the individuals involved.

Duhigg said he felt their decision was very “dumb” especially their choice to return after being caught. “They were risking their lives doing this,” he told Arizona Family News. “There’s just no accounting for brains.”

Duhigg says that it seems the intruders “didn’t really want to get in, but they wanted to make us think they were trying to get in to kill us.”

Security Cameras And Shotguns

Duhigg says that he would do anything to protect what he loves most. Both of his children are special needs. “I need to make sure that they’re extra safe because they can’t really help themselves.”

This would have been a scary situation to deal with as a parent trying to protect loved ones. Thankfully, Duhigg emphasized that no shots were fired. But had it gone wrong, he was prepared to do whatever was necessary.

Let’s take a page from this dad’s book and value our self-defense and safety the way he does.
