A good idea doesn’t come to market just because it’s good. It takes research and development and lots of tenacity to get it into consumers’ hands. SIG’s new P320 XFIVE Legion pistol is a good example of this. True Pearce sat down with Phil Strader, SIG’s pistol product manager, to discuss how its improvements will benefit all kinds of shooters.

The XFIVE includes all the great features SIG reserves for their Legion series. The skeletonized flat blade trigger weighs in at just 3.5 lbs. The front sight is a Dawson Precision adjustable fiber optic. The rear sight is fully adjustable and removable for optics. Plus, it comes with all the benefits of joining the Legion club.

But the real innovations are all in the grip. The original P320 has a polymer grip frame, which has the benefit of softening the recoil, but lacks the weight of steel to actually reduce the gun’s movement in your hand. A steel frame brings weight, but also a sharper recoil that transfers a harsher feeling to the shooter.

This XFIVE has the new TXG Full-Size XGRIP Module, and it makes all the difference in the world. SIG’s team innovated and patented a process for infusing powdered tungsten into the polymer grip. Tungsten is a very dense metal and it combines the weight of a steel frame with the flex of a polymer gun. Be sure to watch the above video for the story on how it came to be.

The XFIVE is ready to compete in all classes with simple modifications for weight depending on each association’s rules. Compared with a 1911, the silhouette is very similar. In fact, you can swap the recoil spring for any standard 1911 spring. Strader, an accomplished pistol competitor, says it’s the “ultimate competition pistol.”

The TXG Grip Module is tungsten-infused polymer and is a big upgrade to any P320.

The P320 XFIVE Legion is selling right now for $899, but it includes most of the upgrades you’d find in a gun nearly twice the cost.

In fact, you could buy the TXG Grip Module and install it on any P320 for $249, but you’d be missing out on all the other upgrades. Specs below.
