The Transportation Security Administration is concerned about the number of firearms turning up at airport checkpoints around the country.
In 2014, the TSA detected 2,212 at airport screeners, a record high and a 22 percent increase from the year prior when 1,813 guns were detected.
The TSA wants to remind gun owners of how to responsibly and legally fly with firearms. To do so, officials went to Syracuse, New York, on Tuesday to give a brief presentation on the do-s and don’t-s
TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein gave the following reminders, as reported by Syracuse.com:
- Research the airline policy for traveling with a firearm.
- Check on gun laws in the jurisdiction you are flying to and from. Some gun permits from New York, for example, are not recognized in other states.
- Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-side container and transported as checked baggage.
- All firearms, ammunition and parts must be declared at the airline counter during the check-in process.
- Replica firearms may be transported only in checked baggage.
- Rifle scopes are permitted in carry-on and checked bags.
- Firearm magazines and ammunition clips (whether loaded or empty) must be securely boxed or included in a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm.
