A Texas woman last week used a firearm to defend herself and her 17-year-old daughter from a shovel-wielding intruder.
No, you likely won’t be hearing about this on your nightly news telecast nor reading about it in the New York Times because it contradicts the lamestream media narrative that having a gun in the house doesn’t make a woman safer.
You don’t believe that the media is that cynical about women and guns? Well, check out this 2014 article published in The Atlantic, titled, I kid you not, “Having a Gun in the House Doesn’t Make a Woman Safer.”
That Atlantic article should be titled, “Having a Domestic Abuser or a Drug Dealer or a Violent Felon in the House Doesn’t Make a Woman Safer.” Because those are people responsible for the violence. Those are the people who endanger women. It’s not the gun. It doesn’t just jump up on its own and fire away. But that’s obvious. Right? Guns or no guns, it’s not good to live with bad people. That should be the takeaway: Women, if you cohabitate with a toxic scumbag — get out now!!! You’re putting yourself at risk! He will hurt you whether it’s with a gun or a knife or a baseball bat or his fists! Get out now!
Yet, that piece of common sense advice that would actually save lives doesn’t fit the anti-gun agenda. Which is to disarm everyone. So, they shift the focus to the gun. Guns don’t make women safer. Ergo, women should not live in households with guns. And if women shouldn’t live in households with guns, no households should have guns.
Explain that logic to Linda Williams of Limestone County, Texas. Williams is the woman I referenced at the beginning of the article. She is the one who used her handgun to fend off 47-year-old Allen Tompkins after he tried to break into her house last Tuesday morning.
“I went to the door and just kind of opened it and there was an older man standing at my front door with a shovel and he asked for a lady’s name and I said ‘there’s no one here by that name I’m sorry, you’re at the wrong house, she doesn’t live here,’” Williams told KWTX.
Tompkins walked away but didn’t leave the premises. Williams then went to her bedroom and peered through the blinds to get a sense of the situation.
“I looked out and he was standing at the opening of the woods with a shovel still in his hand and he kept looking back and looking, I said ‘no this is not going to go down like this.’”
She woke up her daughter Hannah.
“I woke her up and I said ‘go to my bedroom, get the dogs and let’s go’ because that’s where we keep our guns in our house,” she said. “No sooner did we get to the bedroom and shut the door, he was kicking in the front door and hitting it with the shovel.”

While her daughter was on the phone with 911, Williams grabbed her gun.
“I had time to grab the revolver and come out the door. So when he came in the shovel was up on his shoulder, he was headed straight towards us,” she said. “I aimed it at him and said ‘if you take one more step I’ll kill you.’”
Tompkins turned around and started to leave. Before exiting, he said, according to Williams, “Well all y’all need to know is y’all need to leave me the F alone.”
“I don’t even know you, get out of my house,” replied Williams.
“I went back into my bedroom, I locked the door and I watched him go into the woods with a shovel still in his hands while we were still on the phone with 911.”
Authorities arrived 14 minutes later. Who knows what Tompkins would have done to Linda and Hannah had they not had that gun in the household. But, of course, that gun didn’t make them safer.
Tompkins was arrested. He was charged with burglary of a habitation, though more charges may be added.
“My husband says I’m having nightmares calling Hannah’s name trying to make sure she’s safe. As much as I hate to say I killed somebody, I wished I would have so that I could sleep at night knowing that he’s not going to come back,” said Williams.
Ed Laucks, what makes you an expert on what police do. As a retired LEO, I can, as a known fact, tell you that you are full of crap.
No one has the right to enter anyone else’s house unless invited. You don’t know what kind of weapons, if any, they may have or what their final intentions may be. So I say shoot the son-of-a-bitch and put him out of business.
It’s know fact that to some cops, house calls are of low priority and they will get there at their convenience. But, I do also realize that some patrol areas are so large that it does take time to get to a call. THIS IS WHY YOU NEED A GUN IN THE HOUSE. Had she waited for the cops to arrive, she and her daughter could have been killed. This dude had an ax to grind about being bother by people and probably would strike out against this woman and daughter. I certainly hope they held him for mental evaluation.
This perp had no axe to grind, many of them say strange things because when it comes to trial they can claim insanity and will be back on the streets in no time. People need to learn that when someone breaks into your house you have no obligation to warn them or try not to kill them. Killing them stops that problem permanently.
Good for you, Mom. You refused to be a victim. And I admire your restraint.
It is classic. When seconds count, the police are minutes away.
Just goes to show being an instant responder is better than waiting fourteen minutes for a first responder. Mom deserves a big attagirl!
Why are cops referred to as “first responders” when they are usually second or third responders? Maybe we should disarm the cops, make them wear white overalls and drive pickup trucks, and call them what they are – clean up!
I was on the phone with a sheriff describing a suspicious person who had been knocking on our door, as well as the luxury car with paper plates that he came in. I was upstairs with my mother observing the car when suddenly, three guys popped open the doors of that car and ran up toward our driveway. The one that had green gloves jumped our side gate but I hadn’t seen that or didn’t know it yet. I was still speaking with the deputy on the phone when I grabbed my shotgun and positioned myself at the bottom of the stairs. The guy with the gloves had just entered my backyard when he most likely saw me and quickly disappeared. This was my first time that I experienced this kind of incident but I was prepared. About five minutes had passed and still no sheriff vehicle. I saw the car taking off along with the criminals in it. The first sheriff vehicle finally arrived after about 7 minutes. This was the perfect example and argument for guns as deterrents. No shots were fired and nobody was hurt. The sheriffs quickly got all…four. Yes, there were four guys, not three like I initially thought. Just yesterday I saw through on CrimeMapping.com that the house behind me had been forcibly broken into in January. I guess it was the same people who had come to my residence. I would later find out that there have been forcible entries into homes near me. Yet, I thought that this was perfectly safe neighborhood. We have to be proactive and ready for anything. We are the first line of defense, not the police. We can’t leave things to chance.
Well done, and I will venture to say you would have worse dreams had you killed him. You used force and restraint which is something we need to start teaching our LE again. Yes 14 minutes is about the norm, and having a firearm for protect is the best idea. But, do not listen to those that tell you – you should have shot him and worried about it later. Talk is Cheap, you did the right thing. This is Not a left or right thing as so many want to make it out to be. They need to stop complaining about the complainers, and work for a better US.
First of all he had no reason to shoot anyone because they never entered his house. Second, your opinion is just that, an opinion, and a worthless one at that. You really believe that people saying to shoot him and worry about it later is “cheap talk”? Maybe you should research how many “victims” are revisited by a perp that wanted to retaliate for being caught and arrested because of the homeowner calling the cops. These criminals chose to break the law and to threaten the lives of others, they should be dealt with severely and quickly, especially since the “justice” system is so broken. The only victims that need to worry about shooting a criminal in the act of B&E is if they live in turd cities/states like Commiefornia, most of New England, NYC, Shitcago, Detroit …. because they have laws protecting the criminals and not the victims!
Also, GOD told us in scripture that there are three instances where the killing of man has no “bloodguilt” – Judicial punishment, war, and self-defense.
14 minutes for Police to arrive to that call. I am so glad you had a gun and were able to defend yourself and your daughter. The Police can’t be everywhere and that’s why having a firearm and knowing how to safely operate it are so important. Glad it worked out and you are safe.
Well done Mrs. Williams!
