A sheriff in rural Hood County, Texas, has begun the process of declaring his jurisdiction a “sanctuary county” in which any new state and federal gun control laws will not be enforced.
“People are scared. They don’t want to lose their rights,” Sheriff Roger Deeds told local media. “They have the right to protect themselves and we’re going to make sure that they keep that right to keep and bear arms and protect themselves.”
Deeds joins sheriffs in less gun-friendly states like Washington, Illinois, and California in calling for sanctuary counties to oppose state-level gun control laws. While the Texas legislature has historically defended gun rights, the Lone Star sheriff might be responding to calls for universal background checks from Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick following massacres in El Paso and Odessa.
“That gun didn’t pull its own trigger. It took somebody with a demented mind that was maybe in that mental crisis mode to pull that trigger,” Deeds said. “Here in this part of Texas people don’t take too kindly to others, especially from the federal government, talking about wanting to take away people’s rights, people’s weapons, rifles, pistols.
“My message to the people of Hood County is I’m not going to stand by and allow anybody, if it’s the federal government or whoever, stating that they’re going to take away people’s rifles. That’s not going to happen,” Deeds said. “It can’t happen under the constitution of the United States the way it’s wrote anyway.”

Deeds told local media his proposal enjoys strong support from judges and county commissioners. If the proposal goes through it will have to be passed by the Commissioner’s Court of Hood County, and he hopes to get a vote next month.
“We’re doing this to the legal letter of the law, and that’s why we’re going to meet with the county attorney and make sure we get it spelled out right,” he said.
Pressure to enact more restrictive gun control laws has also come from Washington, where the Democrat-controlled House has passed numerous anti-gun bills, President Trump has waffled on his support for universal background checks, and former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke vowed to confiscate AR-15’s and AK-47’s.

Deeds is up for reelection next year, and some have suggested that the move is more about politics than gun rights.
Whatever his motivation, Hood County gun owners are no doubt happy to hear that their sheriff is willing to push back against federal lawmakers intent on confiscating their firearms.
“We’re not going to be messing with the Second Amendment in Hood County,” Deeds said.

I declare my state of residence a sanctuary state. All browbeaten Patriots and those discriminated against and lied about by radical leftists are welcomed. Made at the same time of this declaration, communists, liberals, socialists, clin’ton supporters, and radical leftist politicians have 12 hours to haul their carcasses out of here.

The country needs more people like Sheriff Deeds. I am going to reach out to our Sheriff and find out if he will do the same for Parker County, Texas.
People driving under the influence of alcohol…kill many more people than all gun violence……Yet, we don’t hear a political call to ban alcohol and automobiles from society. Cigarette smoke kills more people than gun violence……and this resulted in the printing of a small warning on the package of cigarettes. There are many many more ridiculous things in life that result in higher death rates than firearms yet the political LIBERAL LEFT wants to deliver a blow to the CONSERVATIVE RIGHT so bad that they have chosen the 2nd Amendment as their target to hurt American Society. If they accomplish any means of gun control…..it will not affect the criminals or the mentally ill who are determined to hurt or kill others. It will only hurt 99.9% of the Legal Law Abiding citizens who RESPONSIBLE own guns. Liberal left are naive idiots if they think gun control will solve gun violence…..their true objective is to remove the 2nd Amendment completely. They are aware it is too much to do in one fell swoop….they are attempting it one piece at a time. We must stand strong and resist ALL efforts to impose controls on the freedom of our Constitutional Rights……that is EXACTLY why the founding fathers of this country wrote the US Constitution the way they did and as a result…..YES, we are the greatest and most FREE country in the world.
And the amount killed by abortions exceeds all these combined and we do not know the actual numbers. Making them also big hypocrites.
The same people who do not understand the 2nd Amendment and why we need to protect it, are those who are trying to destroy all of our other rights. It’s scary because nearly half the country has bought in to the notion that the government knows best. We need more people like this Sheriff who can not only see what the problem is but who is willing to do something about it.
We’ve already lost the right to free speech. Just try saying what you really think, when you’re in a public place, or using words that you only use between friends, and you will soon learn that even speaking can have you locked up, so how much more do we relinquish? As it stands right now, your right to bear arms is pretty much a joke. In most states, you need permission to carry and it must be concealed. Every state has different rules, so beware of that, or you could wind up in jail. Finally, there are so many places where you can not carry, that most of the time, many of us find it too troublesome to bother, so if you need it, you won’t have it.
So what will you really do when “they” come knocking at your door, or knocking your door down, and asking for your guns?

The real shame is that you have to declare a sanctuary from gov’t tyranny.
The founders did the best they could with our constitution; but, as one said, keeping it depends on a moral society. And anyone can see the leftward push on morals by the liberal progressives. The authors of the constitution said they wanted it to be interpreted exactly as written, when written; but for 100 years progressives have done all they can through changing the history books to outright lying
to get people away from the constitution.
I totally agree, the framers never intended though for lifetime career politicians to take over the government and impose their will over the people. The Constitution is a work of genius, but I fear that those who are self-serving are more interested in staying in power than obeying it.
Only limited terms can undo this stronghold and restore our Republic as the founder’s intended.
Right-I am hoping for the same in NH. We are free, but for how long?
I’m happy I can count on my Sheriff to do the same, but being in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, he can’t be as direct as Sheriff Deeds.
This Sheriff, like the majority of them, gets it. The guns do not fire by themselves, it takes a demented mind to kill people for no reason. The sheeple do not hear the truth though, as they get their news from the like of Beto and other cowards.
