Our tour began with a prefabricated gun blank for the famous tipup Taurus Model 22, which comes in .22LR and .25ACP. Dusty Sroufe is the new product manager at Taurus and he gave us the tour.
When I got an invite to the factory at Taurus Firearms, I thought I had just scored a free trip to Brazil! But little did I know, Taurus makes many of their guns right here in the USA, near my stomping grounds in Miami. Those of us who were invited from the gun media family got to see how they make the Taurus tipup pistols, called the small frame or Model 22, and many of the .380 TCP parts being made, as well as guns from Taurus’s Heritage cowboy gun series and even some of the OEM parts that Taurus builds for other manufacturers. You may not know this, but Taurus isn’t just a gun company. They are a huge multinational manufacturing company, and they even make many of the machines that are used to make their guns. Because of a hugely improved quality control system at Taurus, an entire floor of new customer support, and even a pro shooting team, this is a gun company on the move. The word on the street for a couple years now has been that new ideas, new guns, and rave reviews are what Taurus is about these days. We will see some new stuff coming this year even before SHOT Show.
This is a photo essay of the pieces of the manufacturing process we witnessed at the factory. I didn’t get model releases from the employees and for their privacy I have covered the faces of all but Dusty Sroufe, who is the new product manager at Taurus.
The blanks are forged off site, and the CNC makes the cuts and holes that turn it into a firearm.
The Model 22s are built in threes, clamped to a carrier system.

I will be remembered at Taurus as the idiot who took a handful of razorblade like shavings out of the hopper to take a picture of them.
The CNC bits that are used to complete the Model 22 revolve into place on the robot CNC machine.
One of the things that will surprise you at Taurus is how much work is done by hand. This guy polishes the frames.
You would think that all of these guns came out finished, cachunk cachunk cachunk, but they are each worked on by a human before a part gets put into them.
In each batch a certain number of guns also go through laser tolerance testing to make sure that the bits didn’t jump while cutting.
Next we stopped at barrels. These are cast barrel assemblies for the same guns.
Another machine turns this bar stock into TCP barrels.
They come out like this, but not rifled.
Then the barrels go to the rifling machines. These are some of the machines designed and made by Taurus. There was one for the .22/.25 and one for the .380 set up for our visit. It basically draws a rod through the barrel and the rod has the cutters for the rifling.

Next we went to the MIM department, for Metal Injection Molding. These are hammers for the Heritage revolvers coming out of the machine.
MIM parts are made from a melted mixture of metal and polymer. They are cast 1.3 times larger than they will be in the gun. It’s crazy if you think about it because these parts have to be within thousandths of an inch, and they have to shrinky dink them down from .3x larger.
Then the parts get baked in a giant kiln, and that burns away the polymer, leaving like 98% metal.
Size isn’t the only amazing thing. You can weld, polish, cut and tool the MIM parts just like machined parts.
Even though these parts have to be hand finished like others, MIM greatly brings down the production cost of the gun, and your cost of the gun, without sacrificing reliability. MIM parts have no greater failure rate than machined parts these days.

You can use CNC machines to make parts, but it is always the people who put the parts together, make sure that the parts were made correctly, and make sure that the gun is running right.
Even the boxes are folded by hand at Taurus. These are the new orange boxes you’ll see already at the gun dealers these days.

I have a new G2c 9mm and was excited at the prospects of firing the weapon for the first time. It fired perhaps 10 rounds, and then simply quit. I sent it in and 12 weeks later, actually July 27, 2018, I received the pistol from repairs. Fired one shot and the pistol would not fire, just like 12 weeks ago. Am sending it back one more time and if not repaired correctly, I will go to social media where I have some 18,000 readers and suggest that they should not consider buying a Taurus. All I ask for is good service. I understand that not every weapon is going to be perfect, but I cannot even get good service, much less a pistol that will shoot!

Purchased new Taurus PT-111G-2 in January. Gun misfired – took back to gun store where I bought it. It was sent back to the factory in FL and received by them Feb. 21, 2018. Called factory…held for over 45 mins – finally spoke with “John” – who told me it would be checked out and returned within 12 weeks . Today is May 7 and still no communication or gun. I don’t have 30-40 mins to sit and hold phone to reach someone. I need someone to call me or send me my gun; I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TAURUS!
Gun sent back under settlement. It has now been 5 months since they recieved it, and am still being told no time frame.
Sad because I liked my pistol, looks like now I’ll be replacing it because of lousy at best customer service.

HI, This may or may not be the correct address to ask this question. If not maybe you can guide me to where I need to be. I sent my Taurus Model PT24/7 back in for the Extended Warranty and as I can see from the tracking number it was received and signed for by M. Valdirrama. Will I receive a email and tracking number when it, or the replacement is sent back to my FFL dealer?
I would recommend the red loctite since it is recommended for use in applications with oil involved.

If this is one of the models in the class action suit, you can’t. YOu have to return them to Taurus for repair, replacement or a cajhs refund. There is a website to do this, It costs you nothing. YOu will be sent a free shipping l;abel, free pickup by Fedex and free shipping back you your FFL dealer. Even the transfger charge at you FFL dealer is reimbursable. I can’t remember the site but, you should be able to google it.

If you’re into the gun industry or just follow its News, you should know “why” Taurus 24/7 is the reference of all faulty pistols. Videos on youtube and other materials cover the same problem you had. Near 100 Thousand police issue 24/7s were recalled – First time, for there was another recall. So be happy you’re alive and unsued. Actually Taurus isn’t the same company it was and even has na US plant to make some cowboy (replica) and ccw guns.
Because the date for sending them back didn’t start until the end of Sept. 1017. I don’t know what to tell you to do now hopfuly you kedpt the Serial number and can contact them.

I took my gun off of my belt and it fired with the safety on and the gun fired going thru my bed. I am glad no one was on the bed at the time it was a PT145. I trying to find the where to send it to get it fixed.
I bought a taurus 380 semi automatic hand gun from a pawn shop I scheduled myself for safety class the following week and I got my concealed carry permit. I have never held a gun before but learned in class then I wanted to clean it since I had shot 50 rounds that day so I took it to my friend to show me how and she took it apart more then I believe she should have now when I pull back the barrel to load bullet in chamber the disassembly pin just drops out of it and I can not get it to go in and stay in please help. Really? Take the gun to a good gunsmith, a faulty gun can kill you when you need it the most. Any butcher can work your heart, but you’ll want the best doctor. Don’t try it yourself and is your friend a certified professional?
I have seen Cerified Gunsmiths and Cerified everything who coulodn’t change the firing pin in a gun. Experience and knowledge makes a giunsmith. Not just a piece of paper. I am 54, been working on guns since i was 16. I don’t have a piece of paper but, everyone that lives around and knows me, brings their guns to me and if I can’t do anything with it, I tell them to find someone else. It’s a matter of knowing what you can and can’t do. That doesn’t come from a piece of paper. YOu just can’t charge as much as the people WITh the piece of paper do.
I’ve been reading a lot of these comments about people who have had bad experiences with Taurus firearms or Taurus customer service, I have owned several Taurus firearms and put thousands of rounds through them with never any glitches, after reading some of these comments is Taurus really that bad??, I’ve never heard such negativity about a gun company in my life, and the negative comments about their customer service, is it really that bad to??, My opinion of Taurus is this They must be doing something right the Taurus firearms company keeps moving up and up if their pistols fell apart when the first round was fired I don’t think they would be on the up side but falling down, just my opinion.

WHY ME
I purchased at Taurus PT 145 Millennium late in 2014 and really enjoyed the gun. Early in 2015 I was notified there was a recall on all Millennium models for a defect wherein if the gun is dropped it can go off. I sent the gun in August, and was told at that time Taurus was not repairing the defect, and that they would replace the gun with another. I was given two choices and picked the one I liked best. Since then I have received no notices nor the gun. It’s been eight months now and nothing. I find it appalling that a manufacturer the size of Taurus can be so negligent and inconsiderate to its customers. I really want to like Taurus, and have a 9 mm. slim that is just great, but with factory service like this they may force me to go to other manufacturers, as there are plenty out there to choose from.
Ralph, I understand your frustration. I have NEVER owned a Taurus weapon, but really want to like them. I would like to get the new PT111 MILLENNIUM G2. I have several friends who have had them for many years without any problems. However, the delay in Taurus sending you a replacement weapon is probably because the lawsuit against Taurus is not yet finalized, but they should have informed you of that fact.
the pt111 2gn is a great firing handgun and it dosent need to be cleaned after each use.its the perfect pocket size concealed carry.mine is a 9mm, i have been told many horror stories about their 40mm guns.my other carry is a springfield.357 sig.its alot bigger and bulky to carry.people here bitching must remember its a 200.00 gun not a 500.00 or up gun. although mine handles very nicely, and after 1200 rounds, i still have no hiccups.

I bought a pt911 g2 about 3 months ago and have a hiccup at least 3 times per 100 rounds. Im pissed. Trying to work thru it. Losing patience. Don’t know if I should contact Taurus or a gunsmith. Taurus is free, but being without my piece for a long time sucks too. What do you think?
3 things.
1st) & foremost is your choice of ammo. Did you know the owners manual states that use of Reloaded Ammo voids their warranty? Military Ballistics Inc (aka: MBI) sells really good quality ammo that’s factory loaded into only “Once Fired Brass Casings” that they get from military & police gun ranges. But, even though I’ve never had a hicup with MBI ammo, I’d never admit to using it to Taurus. They could log that in under your serial # and your warranty is gone.
I use a lot of MBI reloads in my 9’s, 38’s & 357’s for plinking/practice. But for hunting, self defense or EDC, I’m partial to highly recognized ammo like Hornady, ect.
#2) Proper loading of the mags. I realize most people won’t read their owners manual, but Taurus actually gives a great tip on the loading of Mags. Many complain the PT Mag springs are so stiff, you can’t get the last 2 rounds in. Well, you can, if you use a mag speed loader. I personally use a Maglula. HOWEVER, the tip is that AFTER loading the 1st 5-7 rounds, you rap the butt of the mag in the palm of your hand. You’ll hear the spring rattle a bit, while it’s relaxing. Then the remaining rounds slide in like butter.
#3) Your FEED RAMP probably takes as much or more abuse as any other part of any semi auto. I polish my feed ramps regularly as part of a normal “Deep Cleaning Process”, which may only be every 1000 rounds or so. I find this greatly reduces hicups on many of my finicky guns.

Sent Taurus PT709 in for repairs thru BassPro shops and since have written and called Taurus and was told parts arrive by boat 1st Friday of each month!!I have now missed the Feb,March and April parts boat!!I wonder if my boat will ever come in?I am sitting here on hold for the next technichan to answer-15 minutes now.I contacted Chamber of Commerce,BBB and Florida StatesAttorneys office.I have discussed problem with Bass Pro Shops and the Chicago Tribune help line without any help as yet.I gave up holding the phone.This is the second time gun was sent with same problem.Refund my money as gun has been fired less than 150 times since December 2014 purchase
I recently bought a Taurus pt111 Millennium G2. I was wondering if anyone was having problems with the magazine spring being extremely tight. I can only get in 7-9 bullets then the spring just will not go down any more….It should hold 12. What can I do to resolve this?

I sent my PT140 millennium to Taurus repair shop for a broken recoil spring in September,9, 2015, I was told it would be 4 to 6 months. I spoke with Taurus tonight April, 7, 2016 and was told they cannot give me a date for repair…I was told when I purchased my Taurus that they had the best customer service, Boy did I get lied to. I feel like Taurus has stolen my handgun.

John, that gun may have been one of their recall guns. I had a PT 145 that was said if dropped may fire a round, and was told to send it to Taurus. I sent it in last SEPTEMBER, and was told the gun would not be repaired, but replaced. I was given a choice of two guns and I made my choice. Still waiting….. I cannot convey how frustrating this is and am just about at my wits end.
I bought a new in the box or 140 millennium from academy in 2017 I shoot it 20 times and went to change the magazine and the mag release button fill on the ground I had it to weeks I sent it in for repair now it has been a mouth and a half and the only thing that will tell me that that have fallen behind in the repair department it will take longer I will never on a Taurus
12-11-14 I purchased a Taurus PT709 from Bass Pro Shops in a Chicago suburb.After 2 trips to a firing range I returned gun to Bass Pro jammed every 3 or 4 rounds fired.This was on 4-10-15 and was returned 5-12-15.Again after 2 trips to the range same problem.Returned to Bass Pro 1-15-16.Gave up trying to call as message said there may be a 1 hour wait so on 3-1-16 I mailed you a detailed letter explaining my problem.On 3-9-16 I called late at night and spoke to a man that said they were waiting parts(which is what it also says on the website).I asked if they couldnt fly parts in and he said all parts come by ship only on the first Friday of each month???Apparently I missed February and Marchs boat!!I wonder when my boat will come in??On this website there are many photos of your factory there in Florida so I cant see why repairs are such a problem.I dont think I have fired a total of 150 rounds since purchase.I would appreciate an immediate answer and return or refund on my gun.Jack Burner 630-257-7430.

I have a Taurus PT1911 45 cal. shoots good is accurate .My wife and a couple of other friends had no problems putting 7/8 rnds on target @ 50 feet. However the two piece guide rod would slowly come unscrewed and you cant remove the barrel bushing unless you rack the slide and turn in the rod far enough so you can then field strip the gun. I m gonna try a sm.amt. of blue Loctite.on the threads of the rod. Secondly I tried to get extra mags for at least 6 mos.and kept being told they were on b.o. BS . Take care of your customers Taurus !!! ? how can anyone CARRY ON with out support. Well ?

Hello ,I am thinking of Purchasing a new Taurus 92B 17 , they are available at a very competitive price under $400.00 .But I would like to know if there is a problem with locking block or does the pistol need to be oiled more or requires more maintance. I like a all steel gun. Is this gun going be manufactured into the future are parts going to be available and any problems that come up will they be covered under a lifetime warrantee. Will this gun hold up with weekly target shooting on a 6 month a year service. Thanks for your time.

I carry a Taurus 24/7 Tactical .45 as my duty weapon. I had it during the training academy and used it to qualify. I had not fired it before taking it to the range for the first time, and the guys with Glocks were making fun of me for buying a Taurus instead of a Glock. Long story short, I fired cold and scored a 487 out of a possible 500 points, which was ten points higher than all those using Glocks. I was awarded the Top Shot Certificate for the class. Taurus firearms are second to none for performance and durability under pressure. I’ll never own anything else.
Not that impressed. You mentioned quality is at an all time high but with my first Taurus purchase, a TCP738 I find myself paying a quarter of the guns value shipping it back after just a couple of months because it locks the slide open when ever it feels like it. Most of the time halfway through a magazine. Seems to be a lot of discussion regarding their quality on the web as well.
Hoping for a better experience with their customer service.
Ask them to pay shipping.
Be nice and respectful to companies that give you a bad product.
Let them know you still want to be their customer.
Tell them how you were going to show off the products value on you tube, but now your waiting to get what you paid for 1st.
If that doesn’t work, let them know that your still going on YouTube to let everyone know how dissatisfied you are.
I always get what I want out of a company in this matter.

I have 2 Taurus pistols, a model 605 in 357 that I’ve had for at least 8 or more years. I’ve put just about every type of 357’s to include +P 158 gr. I carry it often and have no fear what so ever that if if have to use it in a life or death moment, I know I can depend on it with no doubt. I also waited 6 months for a model 992 I ordered in stainless, but got blue when it finally came in. Went for it instead of waiting any longer. I love this pistol, it hits what I aim at and really only takes seconds to change form LR to 22 Mag. Everyone who has seen the gun wants to shoot it right then. Have been offered more for it than I paid for it, but it’s not for Sale! It took a while to find a holster for it, finally found that the Judge fits it like a glove. I always carry it every time I am hunting or just walking though the woods. I feel safe when I have it with me. I have the 6.5 inch model and will soon try to find a 4 inch in stainless. Have never had any issues with either gun. When I shop for a new hand gun, Taurus is always one I look at first and plan to buy more. I would like to see Taurus look at making/produce long guns other than the C Judge. How about some shotguns and rifles to buy. Sounds like you like the Taurus revolvers. I have never owned one , only semi-automatics. Revolvers are always more tried and true than automatics. I want a judge too. I especially like the concept of a handheld shotgun. Especially if the adrenalin is rushing in an environment such as a home invasion or running on to a poisonous snake in the woods. You don’t have to be an expert marksman to get what you wish to hit.. I’d love to have the “Judge” in 3″ .410 Ga. rather than 2 1/2″ length.. Thanks for your service.
I have a Taurus Tracker in .17 HMR, the 17B6, with a scope mount and 4x. I absolutely love shooting it. It is elegant and accurate and the only complaint I could possibly dream up would be that I wanted it in stainless but “settled” for blue. The blue is gorgeous. But the 992, in either offering, would be a great piece. I think I might have to have one!
I have carried a Taurus Slim 40 Cal for the past 5 years now. I own other pistols (Colt, Para, Springfield and a few imports) but my daily carry gun is the Taurus. Fortunately I have never had to depend on it in a real situation but shoot it often. It has never failed or jammed and I have fed it all kinds of ammo. I have full confidence in it’s reliability should I ever have to use it. For a pistol this small it is manageable and fun to shoot and if you keep it clean I can’t imagine it failing. I used to buy into the “Taurus is junk” syndrome but my wife chose this same model in 9mm for her carry gun and after shooting it a few times I made a quick transition and have been satisfied since.
I have about 11 pistols from Taurus, 3 1911’s, 2 Judges, 2 P22’s, etc. I have only had one problem with my original 1911 and I don’t think that was the manufactures fault, but they fixed it and had it back to me within one week. I think Taurus is a great company, becoming greater as they are now manufacturing some firearms in the US of A. I also have a pre-Taurus Heritage 22lr and my wife loves it.
I suspect your Taurus 1911’s are great because they use a tried and true design that has been tested on the battlefield and by law enforcement for years. The 9mm’s that I had trouble with are the pt9, and the pt92AF. In cold weather only. They leave a small indent in the primer, but not deep enough to fire the round. All my 45’s are great, including a Remington, an ATI and a Greek made one from Bud’s gun shop. Believe it or not, but the .45 1911 from ATI (GI model) from the Phillipines is the most rugged and reliable of any. You can use Russian ammo in it. Not clean it after using it for 3 or 4 range outings, and it still works like an old plow horse..
I never understand why some guns get a bad rep I love my Taurus firearms there are lots of crappy firearms out there but Taurus is not one of them every now and then everyone makes lemons it just happens at least with lifetime warranty you are out nothing but not everyone carries this warranty
Taurus 9mm pistols are great if it is not in a cold environment.. Out of the three 9mm Taurus, only one would fire at 10 degrees f above zero on the range. Called Taurus about the problem. They said it was the ammo that was faulty. Tried four different brands , Winchester, CCI, Federal, Remington. Results were the same, would not fire. Called Taurus again. Said it had to be the lubricating oil I was using.. This time I completely cleaned the firearms and used a very expensive oil on them $(21.00 four 3 ounces.. Still would not fire in cold environment. Gave up on calling them again. Bought a 9mm Beretta and shot the same ammo in it including Tulamo from Russia. It fired all 5 brands this time. using 3 in one household oil.. My conclusion is that if you are in a cold environment, don’t depend on a Taurus pistol to save your life. They won’t fire.
I have had very good luck with Taurus. They are reliable and when I did send one back they took very good care of me. Recently, I visited some of the dealers in my area and was suprised to hear that they were no longer carrying Taurus. I never got a really good answer why. Can you enlighten me?
They had a rough patch but the dealer should give them another shot and would be pleasantly surprised.

I sent a gun in for repair over a year ago (early 2014) and haven’t heard a word and don’t have the gun back yet.
The only “rough patch” I know of is for Taurus customers !

Sent them a Model Year 2000 PT140SS, the mag release broke and mag fell out when I fired it. When I inquired about the gun 3-4 weeks later they said it could not be repaired and they would send me a new one. I’m in Connecticut so they have to send to a dealer and the dealer had to resend their information 3 times! Sent it to them in June 2015 and have been playing chat tag with them. Finally called down there and was told the new PT140SS G2 is out of stock…. and that it would be shipped “Soon”, that they have to get the gun “in” test fired re-cleaned and them shipped. I understand the test firing and cleaning, but No time frame? When I mentioned that if it had been say S&W, H&K or Glock it would have been a done deal by now. They did not have a response. I’m not happy with the “Customer” Service and will most likely be trading the new gun in for a Glock or S&W even through it is a brand new state of the art weapon.
Ditto on Taurus’ Customer Service. I have a SOCOM 9mm that I literally shot the guts out the rear of the slide shooting what I later found to be +P+ foreign carbine ammo. It was HOT…Oops! Taurus USA in FL went through the pistol, repaired/replaced the damage I’d done. In less than 2 weeks, it arrived back home back looking like new and functioning as if it had never been ‘abused’.
Spread the word they are company that could use to catch a break. New stuff coming soon that is crazy cool and still value priced.
