Among the worst of problems when you start out in Night Vision Equipment is becoming accustomed to the oddity of wearing a helmet with what is essentially a heavy unicorn horn hanging off the front. It is in no way natural to have something heavy on your head to start with, and pulling one direction makes it worse. It takes time for the muscles in your neck to adapt, and it can be a painful experience.

Gadsden Dynamics Minimalist Assault Chest Rig
BY Clay Martin Updated: May 6, 2023This week we got our hands on one of the simplest and most elegant pieces of gear I have ever seen. So simple, in fact, that this review will probably be short on words. This week we got our hands on one of the simplest and most elegant pieces of gear I have ever seen. So simple, in fact, that this review will probably be short on words. Which in this case is a feature, not a bug. It’s right there in the name, the Minimalist.
Radian Talon 45 degree Safety
BY Clay Martin Updated: April 8, 2023This week you get to see me eat a little bit of crow as I finally come around from being a dinosaur to embracing the new hotness. Well, maybe not the newest hotness. But I am finally going to admit that something we started to see about 10 years ago is an improvement over the default AR-15 design.

BY Jordan Voigt Updated: August 3, 2024Research and conversations with other mountain hunters led me to the Crispi Guide GTX and after well over one hundred field days and hundreds of miles, I’m happy to report back.
The Burris SpeedBead – A Disappointing Test
BY Travis Pike Updated: April 2, 2023I don’t get why Remington doesn’t just tap their shotguns for an optic’s mount. Like all of their shotguns. Mossberg does it, so why can’t Remington? Luckily, solutions exist, and one that has always interested me was the Burris SpeadBead. It seems like a great solution for a complicated problem. Burris designed the Spea Bead to be an optic mounting solution that doesn’t require a tapped receiver.
Spyderco ROC
BY Clay Martin Updated: April 2, 2023When it comes to guns and knives, I am generally the practical guy. I write about P320’s and FNH 509s and concealable blades that punch above their weight. We have other people that write about antique machine guns and gadgets, and rarely shall they cross. But I do sometimes get taken in by the cool, even if it is far from the best design.
Understanding Lumens on Weapon Lights and Flashlights
BY Jordan Michaels Updated: March 26, 2023A lumen has a technical definition, but generally speaking, it’s about as bright as a single candle. More importantly for this discussion, a lumen measures the total energy output of a light without regard for beam angle.

Determine what is important to you, and find something designed to fit those needs.

BFG Helium Whisper – Lightweight Pouch Tech
BY Clay Martin Updated: March 3, 2023I was first introduced to Blue Force Gear’s Helium Whisper technology earlier this year, and came away very impressed. Helium Whisper is a new laser cut space ninja type fabric that weighs, as the name implies, nothing. Picking it up, you would think it might be fragile. On that count, you would be wrong. Despite feeling like nothing, as well as being very thin, you can’t tear it.
