A Carbine in a Backpack–TNW Survival Rifle Review
BY Sam Trisler Published: April 3, 2015 { 77 comments }I have had the TNW ARS in for a couple of months during this review process. I carried it in a backpack in my Jeep as a survival rifle. Thankfully I never needed it to be that but I am confident it would have filled the roll nicely. I live in a big town, but travel into rural areas a couple of times a week. A breakdown type carbine is a great choice for my situation. Pack a bag with the Areo, 4-5 loaded magazine, 2 boxes of ammo, a first aid kit, water and a bit of food and I have a great little survival kit.
Cheap Guns: Hi-Point 45ACP Tactical Carbine – 4595TS Review
BY Paul Helinski Published: March 28, 2015 { 131 comments }People get really emotional about Hi-Point guns. You could say that folks “either love them or hate them,” but I think there is a better explanation than that. Quality control and customer service are always an issue with small and fast growing companies. Hi-Point has had its ups and downs, so some people got good guns, and some people got very bad guns. Everyone I know who has purchased a Hi-Point in the last few years has been delighted with it, and my local gun dealer said that he sells a ton of them and none of them ever come back as having problems. To me that says that the word on the street is that Hi-Point guns are now generally reliable, and they have always been very inexpensive for what you get…when it works.

Shooting History-Winchester 1873-Old Gun Review
BY Sam Trisler Published: March 26, 2015 { 27 comments }1873 was a big year in the firearms world. Colt’s new single action was adopted by the Army and Winchester came out with their best lever action to date. Originally chambered in .44 W.C.F., aka 44-40, the 1873 Winchester was the most powerful of the lever guns when it was introduced. This was a huge step forward from the rimfire .44 caliber used in the Henry and earlier Winchester rifles.
Top 5 Budget 1911s
BY Sam Trisler Published: March 25, 2015 { 57 comments }There is something to say about the fancy pants custom and semi-custom steel frames. But there is also something to say about the other end of the spectrum, the el cheapo 1911s. Love or hate the John Browning design, you can not dismiss its history and longevity. Ones that are made right just flat out work and you don’t have to spend $2,000 plus to get one that is made right.
Ammo Test: Remington’s Ultimate Defense 38 Special +P
BY Tom McHale Published: March 24, 2015 { 30 comments }Looking for a carry round that will live up to its advertising hype? Yeah–so am I. Companies make some bold claims about penetration and expansion, and these claims get even more elaborate when rounds are engineered for short barreled guns. Today we’re looking at Remington’s Ultimate Defense in .38. Read more….
Tritium Night Sights for My XD-S – $127?
BY Paul Helinski Published: March 22, 2015 { 6 comments }am not one who upgrades guns all that much. But since getting my first set of tritium night sights stock on a Springfield EMP, I decided that this is the one thing that for my carry guns I must insist on adding, if I didn’t procrastinate it forever. My main carry gun, and pretty much only carry gun these days, is another Springfield gun, the XD-S in .45ACP. It is a single stack, two finger grip that shoots like a 3 finger grip, or better. And until now, I had indeed procrastinated putting the night sights on it. When I read about the new TFX tritium sights from Truglo, I had to try them. Everything I have purchased Truglo in the past has exceeded expectations for the money, and these sights were no different.
Prepping 101: The Silent Kill – But NOT a Silencer!
BY Paul Helinski Published: March 22, 2015 { 27 comments }A friend the other day asked me if I knew anything about setting up a charitable trust to purchase a silencer. He specifically asked because he’d like one for survival, to be able to get in and get out quietly hunting game on public and private land. My answer is what the heck do you want one of those for when you can get a killer crossbow for about the same price?
