Like many other successful cartridges, the .224 Valkyrie was conjured up in a shooting enthusiast’s mind. A “Wildcat” in concept, this new offering from Federal Premium was designed as a ballistic solution to solve an academic problem: how to take “America’s Rifle” to 1,000 yards and beyond.

BY Patrick Kelley Published: December 13, 2017 { 15 comments }“Competition Breeds Excellence” is more than a fanciful quote. To the guys at in Mesa, Arizona, those three words fuel the fire of creativity and drive them to build better and better handguns. It also has the founder of the company, Angus Hobdell, traveling to IPSC matches the world over to prove it’s more than [...]

BY Jordan Michaels Published: December 5, 2017 { 78 comments }Last year Californians voted in favor of Proposition 63, a measure that institutes background checks for all ammunition purchases and requires sellers to obtain an “ammunition vendor license.” The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2018.
The Great Cartridge Debate: .308, .30-’06, 6.5 Creedmoor & More
BY Phil Massaro Published: September 29, 2017 { 53 comments }We’re all guilty, each and every one of us, myself included. We’ll be at a summer barbecue, or sharing a beer at the local pub, or sitting around the campfire, and the cartridge debate will begin. And, once it begins, you’re bound to hear all sorts of boastful claims, insistent arguing points, hand-me-down tales of perfect, flawless performance in the hands of various uncles and grandsires, and all sorts of reasons why any other cartridge than the metallic hero receiving adoration at that moment is a silly, wasteful, childish design. Sometimes you’ll hear – possibly simultaneously if the crowd is large enough and the tongues are loose – that old cartridge should be put out to pasture.

The Round of the Future: The 6.5 Creedmoor
BY Clay Martin Published: September 19, 2017 { 22 comments }The 6.5 Creedmor isn’t a new round, it was introduced in 2008 by Hornady. But this will be remembered as the year it began its dominance in the market place. In reference to .308, I think the words of Winston Churchill say it best. “This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.”

9 Critical Concealed Carry Lessons: Ep. 9 Ammo Selection
BY Clay Martin Published: September 4, 2017 { 121 comments }The last thing we’re going to discuss in this series is what caliber? And what ammunition? This is probably the most hotly debated topic amongst concealed carriers, and it is sure to draw the ire of at least half of our audience. No one wants to acknowledge that they made a poor choice — or [...]
Behind the Scenes: SIG Sauer Ammo Plant
BY Laura Kovarik Published: September 2, 2017 { 4 comments }Few companies can claim they have a hand in every avenue of the market. Nowadays, the strategy of the outdoor tycoons is to buy up the corner of the market they’re pursuing. This often isn’t always the best option for the little guy as it creates monopolies. We’ve seen this with some of the more [...]
