Smith & Wesson just released updated variants of their midsize M&P M2.0 Compact, now optics-ready for use with mini red dot sights. Chambered for 9mm Luger, these pistols add today’s must-have everyday carry feature with the most popular style of handgun on the market.

“The use of optics has become increasingly popular as handgun owners look for ways to enhance their accuracy and shooting experience,” said Smith & Wesson’s Vince Perreault. “To meet the demands of our consumers, the M&P9 M2.0 Compact is now able to accept many popular slide-mounted optics, straight from the factory.”

The M&P Compact pairs a 4-inch barrel with a frame with a magazine capacity of 15+1, making it a solid “one gun” solution for carry, concealment and home defense. Add a red dot sight and it becomes even more flexible.

To accommodate a red dot the updated M&P M2.0 Compact Optics-Ready comes with factory raised suppressor 3-dot sights. These should clear the base of common red dot sights for use as backup iron sights if anything goes wrong with the optic.

Smith & Wesson is offering two versions of the M&P M2.0 Compact Optics-Ready, a standard model as well as an optional

thumb safety model. Both feature ambidextrous controls including slide release levers, a reversible magazine release button, and in the case of the safety model, left- and right-side safeties.

The M&P M2.0 Compact Optics-Ready pistols come with seven mounting plates for use with a wide range of mini red dot sights, two 15-round magazines and four different interchangeable grips.

Otherwise, the guns are everything shooters expect from Smith & Wesson. These are lightweight, polymer-framed striker-fired handguns with passive trigger and internal safeties meant for self-defense and duty use.

The steel components have a deep black polished nitride finish for wear resistance and lubricity. These are modern designs featuring the improved M2.0 action and full-length accessory rail for lights or laser sights.

Smith & Wesson’s suggested retail price for both variants is just $616, which should put real-world and online pricing in the mid-$500-range. These are affordable handguns that offer a lot of utility and versatility at a time when people want guns to do a little of everything.
