Smith & Wesson expands the M&P lineup with the Metal HD and Competitor HD, two all-stainless, 5-inch pistols built for minimal muzzle rise.
Both models use the same steel frame and barrel length, but they target different shooters. One leans towards duty and general use. The other focuses on competition.
Overview: S&W Metal HD Line

Both pistols share a forged stainless steel frame and a 5-inch stainless barrel with a 1:10 twist. The added weight pushes each gun to roughly two pounds unloaded. That mass helps keep the gun flat during recoil and speeds follow-up shots. Smith & Wesson also updated the grip texture, giving the frame a more locked-in feel without going overboard.
Each pistol runs a flat-face trigger, ships without a thumb safety (though thumb safety models are available), and includes interchangeable palmswell grip inserts. Slide serrations are deeper and more aggressive than standard M&P models. Both pistols use a blacked-out U-notch rear sight and feature an optics-ready slide cut.

Metal HD: Duty-Oriented Steel M&P
The standard Metal HD aims at shooters who want a heavy-duty, steel-framed M&P for range use, duty, or general shooting. It uses a Night Fision yellow/green tritium front sight for visibility in low light. The slide remains solid, without lightening cuts, and the barrel is non-fluted.
Smith & Wesson includes two 17-round magazines with the Metal HD. MSRP is set at $1,149. The pistol balances weight and control without pushing fully into race-gun territory.
Metal Competitor HD: Built for Speed
The Competitor HD shifts the focus to competition. It uses a lightened slide with aggressive cuts and a spiral-fluted stainless barrel. The slide is ported, but the barrel is not, keeping the pistol legal for more competition divisions. However, it is just one custom shop away from getting machined ports to run even flatter.
A HIVIZ tritium and fiber-optic front sight replaces the Night Fision from the other pistol. The Competitor also adds a flared magwell and extended, reversible magazine release. Smith & Wesson ships this model with four 17-round magazines. MSRP comes in at $1,299.

Availability and Final Notes
Smith & Wesson expects both pistols to begin shipping in the near future, with availability likely in Q1. Early estimates pointed to dealer shipments within weeks of SHOT Show.
The Metal HD and Competitor HD clearly separate roles while sharing the same steel foundation. Shooters can choose between a straightforward, heavy M&P or a faster, competition-ready factory setup without jumping to the custom market.
