A masked robber was shot and killed last week when a Connecticut clothing store owner defended himself by shooting back.

“In a bold display of bravery, a store clerk at Humble & Paid Co. fought back against two would-be robbers,” East Hartford police reported.

The incident occurred at 10:30 p.m. in a “very decent area” according to one neighboring store owner who was interviewed by Fox 61

Police told local media that two suspects entered the store with the intent to rob it. This led to a struggle between the store clerk and one of the suspects who shot the clerk in the back.

However, the clerk had two legally licensed firearms and fought back, returning fire and striking one of the suspects.

Despite life-saving measures being administered on the scene, the injured suspect, identified as 26-year-old Jashar Haslam from Hartford, was pronounced dead.

The second suspect reportedly ran from the scene and has not yet been located

The store clerk received treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower back and was later taken to the hospital.

Officer Marc Caruso of the East Hartford Police Department even reassured the public.

He told them, “It’s our Downtown East Hartford area, so it’s probably the most densely populated area. It’s a high-traffic area.” He added that police regularly patrol the area and were able to respond to the scene within minutes.

Given Connecticut’s relatively stringent gun laws, the store clerk probably made an unpopular decision to obtain a method of defending himself.

But as we can see, it paid off in the end, and he is alive.  Hopefully, the state’s anti-gun leaders are paying attention.
