On Friday, a North Charleston, SC resident shot a would-be burglar attempting to break into his house.

ABC 4 News reported that the 70-year-old homeowner and a female acquaintance were at a gas station prior to the break-in attempt.

At the gas station, the suspect, John Jones, 42, confronted the woman which led to an argument. A witness reported that Jones put the woman in a chokehold, but she was able to escape and the two returned to the house.

Jones later showed up at the home where he allegedly tried to kick in the screen and front door. The homeowner, luckily, had a firearm in the house. He armed himself with a pistol and fired two or three shots in Jones’ direction causing Jones to flee.

Police soon reported to the scene where they found blood leading away from the door. The police found Jones on the street in a different part of town. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his wounds before being sent to the Al Cannon Detention Center a couple of days later.

Records show Jones is still detained without bond on a first-degree burglary charge.

Police told ABC 4 News that the gun owner and Jones have known one another for 10-15 years and that Jones also has an active warrant out for his arrest in Charleston County.

Police also confirmed that the resident’s door was damaged from the attempted break-in and found spent pistol casings inside the residence.

The Right to Defend

This example shows why having the right to defend yourself and your property is so important. Along with having adequate training, it can be the difference between life and death.

In this example, there was no time to wait for the police to defend them. Luckily, the homeowner and the woman with him could defend themselves when no one else could have. Coupled with South Carolina’s “stand your ground” law, the two are now safe.
