SIG Issuing Mandatory Recall on Select MCX Rifles

SIG Sauer is issuing a mandatory product recall on a range of MCX rifles. In factory testing, on rare occasions, the SIG team found that they could sometimes cause a rifle to fire a negligent discharge when not safely handled.

The recall announcement reports that this malfunction has never happened in real-world shooting, only at the factory. Additionally, SIG testers could only replicate the malfunction with rifles chambered for 300 AAC Blackout. Just the same SIG is asking all MCX owners to send in their rifles for preventative upgrades for all MCX rifles.

“Failure to follow the loading procedures and basic rules of safe firearms handling outlined in the user’s manual has the potential to cause serious bodily harm or death,” states the announcement. “Although this has only been witnessed in 300 BLK, SIG has decided to upgrade all MCX models since the MCX is a modular platform and we want to ensure the quality and reliability of all products we manufacture.”

The announcement goes on to instruct MCX owners to stop using their guns immediately. SIG would like owners to visit the warranty registration website for fast service. Customers may also want to watch this video on how to remove their rifles’ bolt carriage assemblies for factory replacement.

“SIG will send you a prepaid box to return your complete carriage assembly to the factory,” says SIG. “A new assembly, designed with the firing pin locking mechanism, will be shipped out to you within 5 to 7 working days of the receipt of your parts at no cost to you. This upgraded carriage assembly addresses this potential issue while enhancing the performance and longevity of your rifle.”

MCX owners will also receive a $50 gift voucher for their troubles. SIG’s customer service number is open to anyone with any questions about their MCX rifles, even if it’s just to find out if their carbine is affected by this recall. The customer service number is 603-610-3000. SIG is asking dealers to contact their sales reps for support.

This mandatory replacement affects MCX carbines in the 63C000044 through 63C003702 serial number range. Any rifle serial number 25000 or higher is unaffected. Also anyone with an aftermarket trigger group is also asked to contact SIG for further instruction.

The new bolt carrier group and op rod assembly, or carriage assembly, has a new “dog leg” op rod instead of the original dovetail design. It also has a retained firing pin retaining pin, redesigned non free-floating firing pin and firing pin lock. The changes are limited to the carriage assembly which is still a drop-in part.

Customers don’t need to ship their entire rifles or uppers, just the carriage assembly. “SIG Sauer is committed to addressing this issue in an expedited manner, and appreciates your support.”

The SIG Sauer MCX is the company’s flagship carbine. The design uses a gas piston system contained entire in the upper receiver. This allows MCX rifles to use folding stocks and run extremely well suppressed.

These advanced carbines feature modular barrel and handguard assemblies. This allows shooters to swap barrel lengths and cartridges quickly. For this reason, owners of MCX products are asked to send in their Gen 1 carriage assemblies in for replacement no matter what their guns are chambered for.

    76 days since recall notice, my MCX with new replacement bolt carrier AND new Geissele trigger group is now home. Along with a $50.00 SIG store coupon. Not yet fired, but I’m now relaxed that she’s “home again”.

    While this article is trying to be helpful in conveying the recall they have misrepresented some pertinent information. The Sig recall reads:

    *Serial numbers 63C000044 – 63C003702 – Contact SIG Customer Service for instructions.

    *If you have replaced your trigger group with an aftermarket trigger please contact SIG Customer Service for instructions.

    *Any MCX rifle with a serial number ending in 25000 or higher is exempt from this program.

    Contacted Sig 12/22, they promised a return box would be sent. No box recieved. Recontacted 12/29 ( over an hour on hold). Advised shipping box not yet sent out due to “product issues”. Would be advised via email when it ships (just the box, for carrier group return) Geee ?? Not very pleased with SIG’s handling so far?!

          1/17, return box received, bolt carrier group packaged up and returned. Be sure to obtain parcel return receipt from USPS with label#. Will update when I receive replacement .

            2/7/17 received full sized return box via FedEx?? This after already returning my bolt carrier group via previously received small box?? WTF. I have not installed any custom trigger so Im perplexed as why I now received a full sized return box. Enclosed instructions same as before and only for BCG. Will have to again call customer service and find out what’s going on. Grrr, wishing I’d never bought this MCX.

    AN ADDITIONAL FACT IS IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED AN AFTERMARKET TRIGGER FOR YOUR MCX IS THAT IT WILL NO LONGER WORK WITH THE NEW BOLT CARRIER GROUP.GIESSELE IS CURRENTLY MANUFACTURING A MODIFIED SSA TO WORK WITH THE NEW BOLT CARRIER GROUP.THIS WILL ALSO BE SENT TO YOU UPON RECEIPT OF YOUR CURRENT AFTER MARKET TRIGGER HAS BEEN RECEIVED BY SIG SAUER. NO MENTION OF AMOUNT OF TIME OR PREPAID POSTAGE AND BOX HAS BEEN MADE FOR THIS PROCESS.
    QUESTIONS I HAVE ARE AS FOLLOWS:
    1)WILL SIG SAUER BE EATING THE POSTAGE FOR THIS PROCESS?
    2)IN THE EVENT THAT YOUR NOT A GIESSELLE FAN WHAT THAN?POSSIBLY WAIT FOR YOU AFTERMARKET MANUFACTURER TO COME OUT WITH THEIR VERSION?
    3)HOW DOES THIS EFFECT SIG SAUERS ABILITY TO MARKET THE FIREARM AS MODULAR AND AN EASILY ADAPTABLE FIREARM UNDER WHICH THOSE ADVANTAGES THE MCX WAS ORIGINALLY MARKETED?
    4) WILL THE COST OF FUTURE CALIBER CONVERSION KITS BE EFFECTED BY THE NEED TO RECAPTURE CAPITAL LOST IN THIS UNFORTUNATE EVENT?

    Looking at the illistration for the Gen 2 mod, it shows a “non removable” fireing pin retaining pin. If this is not user removable in the Field, how can you completely clean the bolt, carrier and firing pin? We suppose to add aerosol gun cleaner to our pack? I would skip the recall for that reason. If that pin is factory pressed, you are not driving it out with a punch and hammer. I had that problem with a Sig 556 and that pin was supposed to be removable by hand for cleaning. Mine had a min dia hole and max dia pin. Sig customer service was great: no cost to/from, bolt back in 5 days!

      the pin pulls out for firing pin removal / cleaning. but it stays attached to the BCG (like the take-down pins on an AR they pull out but dont come off completely so you dont lose them.)

    I think sog is fixing multiple issues with this recall good for them in stepping up making the call and even giving the customer 50 bux for the trouble i like seeing these companies do what right without being forced to do so it reflects well on them now and in the future even if the shorterm is a lil frustrating
