Russian long-range rifle specialist Lobaev Arms is announcing that they’ve been contracted to produce a new sniper rifle tasked with being effective well outside of 4 miles, seven kilometers to be exact. The contract is with an unnamed foreign agency, not the Russian military.
The rifle to meet the requirements is the Lobaev DXL-5 Havok, chambered for .50 BMG. While 7,655 yards is a stretch even for the renowned long-reaching cartridge, Lobaev says they have special ammunition in development as well.
“The Russian army already has Soviet-era SVD and KORD sniper rifles and don’t need any new ones,” said Vladislav Lobaev, the owner of Lobaev Arms. “We have a foreign contract for the development of a DXL-5 in a .50 BMG caliber and investments on creation of a new generation of ammo that will be able to drastically increase snipers’ capabilities.”
Lobaev says the new ammo technology extends its range over conventional ammunition by around 50 percent. Early reports indicate that the projectiles are moving at extremely high velocities, achieving speeds well over 4,000 feet per second.
“We’re working on the DXL-5 Havoc project in full swing,” said Lobaev. “We are currently processing the remaining parts of the rifle and are scheduled for shooting tests in November.”
“We created four types of ammo in different calibers,” Lobaev said. “We will test each one of them in November on the DXL-5 platform and choose the two most suited for precision and lethal shooting at such long distances.”
Lobaev did not detail what makes his ammunition unique. It could be the projectile construction, propellant formula, higher-than-standard pressure loading, or a combination of any or all three.

Additionally, the rifles will have to be incredibly precise to reliably put rounds on target at those distances. The DXL-5 Havok will have to be able to shoot groups that are a fraction of a minute of angle in size in order to be effective that far out.
Lobaev Arms produces a number of precision long-range rifles in a wide variety of chamberings, but the DXL-5 Havok project is ambitious, to say the least. While this contract is with a foreign client, Lobaev hopes that the DXL-5 will see wider adoption if it succeeds.

It’s fairly well known that tracer projectiles omit a “jet” of extremely hot air causing the trajectory to rise higher and longer than normal. This was especially obvious by WWII fighter planes shooting .50 BMG tracers at enemy planes only to see them go over the target. With an extended shoulder and an even more powerful (and invisible) trace compound such a round could extend the distance, but I’d have to see this claim to believe it.
Wonder if they will offer a package deal and include the hot mama carrying it in the photo. If so, sign me up, she can carry my gun anyday.

There’s so much wrong with your brain it’s hard to know where to start so I’ll just address the most obviously stupid verbiage; of course you’d have to be mad at someone to shoot at them with this Behemoth, it’s not called being “mad” it’s called extreme prejudice.
This is the gun that “Shoots Today and killed Yesterday” so sure only allowing enemies to possess them is an EXCELLENT idea 🙄 Dont worry Pottery Barn or Pier One Imports are not going to be running “specials” on them anytime in the future so you’re safe.

Forget the $25k for the gun, my guess is that the ammo will cost $50 per round. Even with the special ammo a target 7 miles away would have to be still for 9.24 seconds at 4000 FPS, maybe even longer if it is cold, so you would be shooting into the future 🙂
Understand your point/principle, but it’s “only” 4-plus miles, not 7…4.34 miles, just shy of 23000 ft or 7700 yds….I’ve wondered the same thing, esp when those two kills were in the news a year or two/few ago at something like 11000 ft over in the sand somewhere…can’t recall the exact details/distance but was a record at the time.
25,000 Dollar for this rifle? *sob* 🙁 It looks very good, I like the picture with the camouflage finish and the fact that it shoots .50 BMG is a big plus as well for me, but there is no way that I could ever get my hands on one of these, because of this extreme price. In this way, I share the stated opinion of the Russian military and would rather go for a good old Dragunov SVD (currently on GunsAmerica for 2,199.99 Dollar), instead for this elite-class-only rifle, as much as I seem to like it.
By the way, does anyone know a range in this country that is at least 7 kilometers long, so that one of us, with a lot of money on his hands, can test this gun to the max? 🙂

Sadly for us, no one in America is assassinating billionaires or Politicians in the US of A at any range yet. At a $25,000 cost, very few will be sold to anyone but the military. Calling for a ban on them as dangerous for America is beyond STUPID since ZERO murders are being committed by them and their idiotic ban would not include the military.
This is an excellent example of the kind of dangerous weapons that precisely zero American civilians need. This is the kind of thing they might call the gun that shoots today and kills tomorrow. I hope the President has sanctions against Russia to keep this kind of dangerous weapon off of American streets.
The good news is that very few folks out there can actually shoot something like this. Sure, I believe all you guys shot a bajillion yards with your anemic 5.56s (and a 3-9 discount scope!) but for the average shooter, this is overcharged. I shot a rifle chambered in .50 BMG once and you would have to be mad at someone to shoot at them with one of those – both for recoil and the ammo cost. Like, Easter Rebellion mad when the Irish were shooting at the British with 13mm Mausers leftover from WWI. Even so, common sense clearly shows that we are safer if these are not imported.
