A trio of teen thugs thought they had hit it big after they robbed a 23-year-old Detroit man Sunday night at a bus stop. But little did they know that their victim, the recent recipient of a concealed carry permit, was also armed and prepared to defend himself.
And that’s exactly what he did. After they took $220 from the man’s pocket, the crooks celebrated the score and dropped their guard and that’s when the victim took action, drawing his handgun and opening fire on the suspects.
“They threatened him and told him if he moved they were going to blow him which is a term for I’m going to kill or shoot you if you move,” said the victim’s brother Tremaine to Fox2Detroit. “And that’s what ended up happening.”
The victim shot the 16-year-old robber in the chest, the 17-year-old robber in the leg. The 19-year-old robber was not wounded. The trio immediately fled the scene — running for their lives.
Stealing is dumb, but bragging about theft on social media is, well, a whole other level of stupidity.
After shooting the thugs, the victim phoned the police and recounted the incident. Authorities then discovered the two wounded suspects at a nearby medical center, the Sinai Grace Hospital. Not surprisingly, they had lied to hospital staff and said they were held up and shot.
Investigators interviewed the teens and one of them not only confessed to robbing the concealed carry permit holder at the bus stop but also admitted to perpetrating other criminal acts, which were corroborated by posts on their Facebook pages.
Stealing is dumb. But celebrating your theft on social media, well, that’s a whole ‘nother form of stupidity.
Police are still investigating the incident and no charges have been filed. The 16-year-old is in critical condition and the 17-year-old is in stable condition. It wasn’t clear by the report whether the 19-year-old was in custody.
Meanwhile, the victim was questioned and released. Tremaine spoke about how he and his brother share the belief in one’s right to self-defense, particularly in a city where crime is pervasive and the police are not always there when one needs them.
“I believe you should have the right to protect yourself from any danger,” he said, “We should be able to walk and go where we want freely and not be in fear of our life that that’s why I believe your CPL is protecting you from any danger you may come across.”
The whole thing seems to be a misunderstanding going by the article.These two thugs offered to blow him for the money in his wallet. He obviously wasn\’t happy with the quality and shot them.
Yes, you SHOULD be able to go where you wish without fear of danger. But that’s not the way things are. Please bear in mind that having a firearm is not a cure-all. As RESPONSIBLE CPL holders, it is also our duty to practice vigilance and threat avoidance any time we are carrying. Following such an incident the victim should be asking himself “Could I have done anything different to ensure the situation never arose?” Granted, the thugs probably deserve waterboarding or worse, lol.
That’s what I would do, hand them my wallet if I had to to let them be distracted, then draw and shoot them all in the chest and in the face. Then I’ll sue their families for mental anguish and damages, ammo and wear and tear and cleaning my gun, and the hassle of talking to the police about it. Anyone considering it revenge is naive and foolish. They threatened him, and almost got the death they deserved.
It may very well be a revenge shooting, if the victim was no longer in serious danger, if the robbers were leaving etc. If that’s the case the victim could be in for big trouble. $220 without the danger still being present is not justification for shooting them (even though I think it should be!). I think CCW’s should have a little higher minimum age limit, since brains – especially the judgment area – are not fully formed until +- 25 yrs.
You can “what if” the crap out of it, it still wont present answers….What if a snake had legs? Would it still drag its ass? What if a bull frog had a glass ass? would it break every time it bounced? We will never know….and regarding the 25+ age limit increasing for CCW, what would make you think that age has anything to do with mental capacity?…When I served my first tour in Iraq at the age of 18, all the judgment I utilized when engaging a threat was totally immature, not within standing ROE or unit SOP, right?…Some people get the concept of defending themselves and ensuring the threat is completely eliminated whilst a situation presents itself, while others get the equipment, get the permit that says they can carry, but don’t continue their education in the field of defensive tactics. Bottom line, training is key, not just shooting paper at the range, but actual continued education in that field. This is where I hate to say it but just like with most firearm carrying professions, civi’s should have mandatory continued ed. when being authorized to carry, to include mindset, hostile intent vs hostile action determination, collateral damage assessments, and basic fundamentals, hell even verbal judo, threat de-escalation, match force with force unless deadly force would be the justified solution…. just my two cents…This of course is also being self aware of what could happen after the fact of letting one out of the pipe and into anthers soft tissue… This is all just a small portion of crap that our teenagers are learning when they enlist regardless if the individual is fully developed at the age of 25; there are plenty that are under that age that could tactically and defensively out do most peace officers due to their dedication to defensive training and not just stopping all pursuance after they pass the academy and collectively punch holes through paper every so often… Bottom line, I do not like todays society with everybody being offended at anything that is said or done by what I would consider good Americans that contribute to society. I miss the days of telling people to have some thick skin, suck it up, voice your opinion, but don’t over do it. Hell, why not even administer an MMPI 2 test to determine if one has enough integrity as an individual and let that be another deciding factor prior to graduating another CCW holder. It sounds like im trying to make it harder for people to get their well deserved right but I just want the right people to be the ones that are allowed to carry, especially when I take my family out to dinner, the movies, the fair, the grocery store, the farmers market….Nothing would make me more hateful then a stray round from an untrained individual that was being attacked and thought it was safe enough and were confident enough to shoot only to have that stray round finding its way into my little ones…Enough of my rambling… Hopefully I got my point across…

Please tell me the article should have said “Blow him away.” and not “Blow him” The meaning as you all know is radically different. LOL.
So the headline portrays this as a “revenge’ shooting. Hardly seems so. What’s that all about? I think it’s flippant and irresponsible, in that it is apparently a legal use of deadly force.
Way too much money will be spent by the hospital trying to keep the thugs alive.
I live just outside of Detroit and this happens everyday. Just more reasons to institute constitutional carry here in Michigan. We don’t want to be like kommiefornia, NY or NJ.
