Red Cities vs. Blue Cities: Which Have the Lower Homicide Rates?

Let’s talk about homicide rates in red cities vs. blue cities of similar size.

The largest big cities are almost entirely Dem-controlled. Of all cities with over 500,000 people, 36 in total, only 4 have Republican mayors. But once you get into cities just under the half-a-million mark, you get a decent mix of party control. From there, you can make comparisons.

For this exercise, the cities I’ve included are those with a population of 400,000 to 500,000, and using the Mayor as a loose proxy to label the city as “Red” or “Blue” (I acknowledge that’s imperfect, but this is Twitter, not a peer-reviewed paper).

Note that while Colorado Springs had an Independent sworn in two months ago, the city had a line of Republican mayors for decades before that, so I am counting that city as red for this exercise. The homicide rates for each city in 2022 are as follows:

Blue Cities

  • Atlanta: 170 homicides, or 34.1 per 100,000.
  • Raleigh: 49 homicides, or 10.5 per 100,000.
  • Long Beach: 36 homicides, or 7.7 per 100,000.
  • Oakland: 134 homicides, or 30.4 per 100,000 (NOTE: 2021 data, couldn’t find 2022).
  • Minneapolis: 81 homicides, or 18.8 per 100,000.

BLUE CITY HOMICIDE AVERAGE: 20.28 per 100,000.

Red Cities

  • Omaha: 29 homicides, or 6 per 100,000.
  • Colorado Springs: 54 homicides, or 11.3 per 100,000.
  • Virginia Beach: 23 homicides, or 5 per 100,000.
  • Miami: 47 homicides, or 10.6 per 100,000.
  • Tulsa: 68 homicides, or 16.5 per 100,000.
  • Bakersfield: 38 homicides, or 9.4 per 100,000.

RED CITY HOMICIDE AVERAGE: 9.8 per 100,000.

Failure is a choice. You don’t have to like Republicans, but people in all these violent blue cities should demand better from their elected leaders.

Micro stamping will not work. All it does is increase the cost of shooting to law abiding Shooters.
Criminals will sure older weapons without that technology. If it ever becomes more common, Criminals will collect marked brass at public ranges and spread them around crime scene
That would throw off and investigate leading to innocent gun owners being investigated or possibly being charged because brace from their weapon being found at a crime scene

Who is Red and who is Blue?

Gun violence is not a red or blue problem. It is an American problem. American streets and American schools are war zones and no Republican or Democrat mayors can shield our kids by virtue of some political affiliation. Nation-wide problems demand nation-wide solutions. Common sense steps working together – microstamping, universal background checks, registration, AWB… nation-wide. These patchwork solutions coming from the states leads to loopholes like the Indiana to Chicago pipeline.

“an American problem”, Really? How about Brazil? I guess that’s ‘America’, as in South America, but to try to make this JUST about the U.S. is total B.S.
Their problem is however, just like ours, in that it is MOSTLY gang related.
But see, all YOU can see is guns as the problem, NOT people.
Your suggestions only affect the Law abiding to begin with, and by definition, criminals don’t do that.
Try again Noun Man, this time use your noggin.

It doesn’t surprise me that the murder rate is higher in democrat run cities
Just look at the DAs not prosecuting gun violations. First charge to be dropped is gun enhancements. I have never seen anybody serve their full sentence. Looking at violent crimes, 90 percent are commented by 10% of the repeat offenders who are out on bond. Or No Bond. If you keep voting for the Soros bought and paid for liberal candidates for DA., you will continue to get what you deserve. Decaying liberal cities.

I would like to address your proposed solutions while bearing in mind that criminals don’t obey laws.
Microstamping: All it takes is a file to remove the stamping from the firing pin. Also it’s only available at a crime scene after the fact unless the criminal polices his brass.
USBC: How many criminals do you think buy their weapons are going to go through a background check. If you check the statistics only a small percentage of criminals buy their weapons through a legal system. Also several of the “mass shooters” passed a background check when buying firearms.
Registration: Do you really believe a criminal is going to register a firearm? If it were registered it would easy to report it as stolen at any point after the registration.
AWB: Whose definition of an assault weapon do we use? Is it based on being an actual full automatic weapon or simply because it looks like a scary military weapon?
The answer is to punish the criminals not law abiding citizens who have saved lives many times with the use of their personal weapons. When seconds count the police are minutes away.

Fuck right off with this you communist clown, tired of your ilk blaming law abiding citizens, how about go after the perps for once you dense mfer.

I read this article three times and still don’t know what the hell its trying to say aside from the fact that you hate democrats. If we would keep guns away from criminals and nuts the murder rate would be much lower in all states red or blue. But we won’t let that happen will we?

    • Jay August 25, 2023, 4:51 pm

You must have read a different article. I read the article and no where does he indicate a hatred for democrats he is simply using data to show that cities run by democrats have a higher murder rate which can be assumed is due to their policies and laxed attitudes towards criminals. I agree with your one statement that if guns are kept from criminals the murder rate (and crime rate for that matter) would be lower, however all they want to do is pass more gun laws that will only hurt law-abiding people not criminals who by definition do not obey laws.
