Pipe-Wielding Attacker Beating Elderly Man Shot By Neighbors

Last week, two men in a small neighborhood in Bartow County, Georgia, came to the rescue of an 86-year-old man who was being brutally beaten.

The elderly man’s attacker was armed with a metal pipe, local media reports.

According to one witness, the perp forced the victim, identified as Calvin Lee, out of his home and began assaulting him around 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

“He pulled him [Mr. Lee] out of his house and started beating him,” Lee’s neighbor Pauline Gravely told Fox5.

Two other neighbors, a father and a son, heard the cries for help from Mr. Lee and his wife.

They armed themselves and headed over to the residence to “intervene and stop the fight,” said Gravely.

The assailant, who has yet to be identified, did not yield.  Instead, he physically confronted the two neighbors, punching one in the jaw while trying to grab a gun away from the other.

Fearing for their safety, the neighbors shot the perp twice, hitting him in the stomach and in the thigh.

The use of force stopped the violent attack on Mr. Lee and the two neighbors.  The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

Authorities told Fox5 that he will likely face charges for burglary, aggravated assault, and criminal trespass.

Mr. Lee was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital for treatment of the wounds he sustained during the incident.  The extent of the injuries is unclear, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.  Stay tuned for updates.

If victim died was the assailant only being charged with aggravated assault?

Unless they had prior experience, or were trained to deal with a situation like this, the heroes who came to this couple’s defense were very lucky to have escaped with their own lives. I believe that an untrained person with a firearm is not on equal footing with a predator, and is very likely to hesitate or freeze up when facing a violent attack. The difference here may have been that there were two of them?

Current and retired officers around the Atlanta Metro area have brought up the fact that the Atlanta news media are continually omitting the race of these low life suspects. One retiree from Indiana was very vocal about this.
Now, let us do some fact-checking. Atlanta area, mostly inside I-285, the truckers have named it the ring around the Congo. 95% of crimes against persons are committed by the young black male, 15-30. They will never report this.

Too little details. So sad but too true. The devil is in the details. Thankfully, this news agency, where ever it is located didn’t turn it into a racially profiled killing. Would be nice to have the details released as they do all homicides no matter which state. 👁

Confusing title – I read it as an elderly man was shot by his neighbors, and then beaten with a pipe by someone else.

Only investigation needed is to why the perp isn’t dead. Father and son need more range time. But thanks to them for stepping up and helping a neighbor.

Killing another human is not easy. No sane person wants to take a life, however in many cases it is both necessary and justified. Likely the armed citizens wrongly assumed they would get compliance from the wrong doer or he would flee at the sight of two armed men.

They were wrong and were unprepared for the reality, that many wish to fight it out, even with the police. Their hesitation almost cost them their lives. Both could be awesome shots on the one way range, but none of that counts for much in a real fight. Core competencies of marksmanship are important, but they are not all you need to know.

Only the bad guys know who will become a victim or when a gun fight will happen. These guys were all lucky and in the end, sometimes luck is all you have, but luck should never be part of your plan.
