With respect to AR-15s, Piers Morgan has a message for president Donald Trump: “Grow a pair, and ban them.”
In an op-ed published by “The Daily Mail,” the former CNN talking head made his case for banning America’s most popular rifle.
“I refuse to believe the Founding Fathers would have ever allowed guns like AR-15s to be used by American civilians as killing machines in this horrendous way,” wrote Morgan, after recounting various mass killings involving AR-pattern firearms, including Saturday’s tragedy a Synagogue in Pittsburgh.
“Nobody needs one for home defense. Nobody needs one to hunt. Nobody needs one, period – other than to kill a lot of people fast, as we are now seeing time and again,” Morgan continued.
Like the fire extinguisher in your closet or the First Aid Kit under your bathroom sink, you don’t need an AR until suddenly you do. No one knows this better than Stephen Willeford, the hero who stopped a spree killer last November shooting up a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
When talking to CRTV’s “Louder with Crowder,” Willeford was candid about the situation and the need to be optimally armed to confront the active murderer.
“If I had run out of the house with a pistol and faced a bulletproof vest and kevlar and helmets, it might have been futile,” Willeford said of the suspect who was deck out in tactical gear. “I ran out with an AR-15 and that’s what he was shooting the place up with.”
“I hate to politicize that, but that’s reality,” he added.

Willeford needed his AR-15 at that moment. And with it, he saved lives. Of course, Willeford isn’t the only one who used a black rifle in defense of himself and others in recent years. An Oklahoma man fatally shot three masked home invaders in March of 2017 with an AR. In June of this year, a Memphis man killed two armed burglars with an AK-47. Speaking of civilian Kalashnikovs, an Ohio store owner in November of 2017 also used one to repel two gun-wielding robbers.
Morgan’s notion that the president gets to decide what arms a law-abiding citizen gets to use to defend himself, his family and his property is absurd. Technically it’s a nonstarter because only Congress can make laws regulating firearms. A president cannot. Obama would have banned modern sporting rifles a dozen times over had he had that power.

More to the point, though, circumstances often dictate what one needs. Given that we live in a world where violence is extant and inherently unpredictable, what one needs may vary. The tool you use to disable a violent drunkard may differ from the tool you use to take on a tyrannical government and their jackbooted minions.
The 2A is scalable in this regard. It’s why the founders explicitly barred government from infringing on one’s right to keep and bear arms. Remember — Shall Not Be Infringed? There are no delineated limits (i.e. “Only one musket per household”) because there are no limits to the situations one ought to be prepared to confront.
So, yes, Morgan is dead wrong. When it comes to basic rights and liberties, our government is not meant to be prescriptive. On the contrary, it’s designed to protect and maximize the freedom of the individual.

The founding fathers WANTED the American people TO HAVE “military grade firearms”. Because should the militia be called upon to defend this great nation from invaders, the militia was to fight like a military force. Now back then, when it was written they didn’t have these type of weapons. They had .50 caliber muskets that WERE EQUAL to military grade of other countries.
