Vermont’s ban on bump stocks has turned out to be an epic failure.

State police told local media this week that a total of two reciprocating stocks were turned in prior to the Oct. 1 deadline. Two! That’s it! For the entire state!

The ATF estimates that there are up to a half million bump stocks in circulation in the U.S. While it’s not clear how many are in The Green Mountain State, it’s almost certainly more than two!

Authorities in Vermont should not be shocked by the poor turnout. Compliance in the other eight states that have prohibited them has also been virtually nonexistent.

Only three stocks had been surrendered by the February deadline in Massachusetts, and as of earlier this year, none (0) have been turned in since Denver and New Jersey banned the devices, as GunsAmerica previously reported.

Henceforth, any citizen caught possessing a bump stock faces up to a year in jail, a fine of $1,000 or both, Vermont State Police Capt. Tim Clouatre told NBC5.

Along with banning bump stocks back in April, Republican Gov. Phil Scott signed additional gun control legislation, including a bill prohibiting rifle magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds and handgun magazines with a capacity greater than 15 rounds.

Jim Dattilio, the owner of Dattilio’s Guns & Tackle, said these new laws are going to hurt his bottom line because he is sitting on inventory he can no longer sell to Vermonters.

“(My business) will take a wicked blow because, all the magazines I have in the shop, I can’t sell those anymore to anybody from Vermont,” he told NBC5.

With respect to the confiscatory bump stock law, Dattilio said it’s tantamount to stealing.

“The only thing that I’m sad about is that the law-abiding citizens that purchased those (bump stocks) now have to give them back and in doing so (the state is) not going to give them what they paid for them, which is really stealing,” Dattilio explained.

Gun Owners of Vermont, a pro-2A group based in Saxtons River, is challenging the bump stock ban in court. It filed a lawsuit in Windham County Superior Court on Aug. 21, 2018.

Dattilio said he will be keeping an eye on the case as it makes its way through the courts. But he also said that this latest wave of gun control is working to push folks out of Vermont.

“Most of my clientele is moving out of this state. They’re going to a friendlier tax state such as Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina and Texas. This state better wake up because I’ve lost a lot,” Dattilio said.

Tyranny didn’t work out too well for the USSR, Nazi Germany, and Cambodia so why are Americans embracing it?

  • BIGKIELBASSA October 7, 2018, 12:08 pm

Repeal the Hughes Amendment and then the liberals can stick those Bump Stocks up their rear ends . Ban Liberals. Not guns .

I never wanted or ever bought one, there worthless IMHO.

But if I had I’d tell them to go fuck themselves.

These politicians keep pushing the boundaries of the Constitution to the point where a 2nd American Revolution,,,, Will Happen ,,not possibly happen. My family were Vermonters before Vermont or even the US was even founded,,

we were here sense 1748 and the “original rebels” that fought for and built this country. They want to start another war by defying the Constitution me and my family has fought for for well > 240+ years,,they’ll have it, just keep pushing and infringing on our rights and a breaking point will happen.

We The People will only stand so much before we Finally stand up just as my family did against the Brits in the late 1700’s.

Keep pushing politicians, but don’t you be the least bit surprised by what happens,,,,We The People have had enough! Period!

MMMMM… I knew when I left Mass. it was a good thing .The fools that vote these lying asses in office have and will continue to destroy everything that was fought for in Concord and Bunker Hill .Why do you think everyone comes to America ?Folks Leaving a crap hole of a country that confines and subdues it’s citizens . We as a nation have been seduced by easy money , a nanny state and a corrupt education and government . I would enjoy a good old tar and feathering of some of these lying politicians . Starting with the Governor of Connecticut then going for Jerry Moonbeam Brown . San Francisco is looking like 3rd world country in the making . I stay away from N.E. due to all the convoluted laws and corruption . The Big Dig comes to mind . I am in the socialist state of Maryland at present plan on moving soon . Never will a politician go to the root of the problem they always go for the tool used and not the root cause . Oh by the way look at Rhode Island Rt. 6 east of 295 was a better road when it was dirt and over the years has been contaminated by tar patches . So that is my rant on N.E. nice colors in the fall shame it is a no go zone of over bearing laws and taxes run by tyrants and crooks .

Don’t sell your soul to the Liberal//Democrats. Stay free !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • G.O.A. Patriot October 5, 2018, 12:10 pm

So now government is in the business of making law abiding citizens into criminals??? This is where I disagree with President Trump! When you start banning gun accessories you’re starting out on a slippery slope!

    • Jack Giacchino October 6, 2018, 9:54 pm

Hey pal. It isn’t Trump enforcing this antigun nonsense. It’s the liberals in your state pushing this agenda. Keep this in mind when you vote in November. Vote the liberals out of office!

  • Tim October 5, 2018, 11:54 am

Isn’t this using an ex-post-facto law to criminalize political opponents? Banning future sales is one thing but this presumes there was something about these things that we did not know when they were sold legally. Personally I’m against bumpstocks being available but if you own one already then just don’t sell it or transfer it in Vermont.

It’s almost time to use the 2nd amendment. We better hope Kavanaugh gets voted in or our nation just might go democRATic.

  • Terry Constance October 5, 2018, 7:53 am

You can’t fix stupid. Just ship it to a friend or relative in a legal state until the communists are out of office.

    • Evil October 5, 2018, 10:26 am

Which state do you send it to, according to info on guns America, Trump is ready with the nationwide, federal ban. Therefore, shipping them anywhere, especially across state lines, will be illegal.

So glad he went with the NRA on this one, don’t we all feel safer? Just remember who was in charge when this happened. BTW, who was in charge in ‘86 when they banned all new production on MGs for citizen consumption with tax stamp? Seems like that just put existing hardware into the realm of “ unobtanium” where a good example costs considerably more than a good used car.. Thank you, Ronnie

  • Sepp W October 4, 2018, 7:26 pm

Of course this will be all moot after the liberals take the house and senate, impeach the President, and then systematically resume destroying the Constitution, abolishing individual rights, and implementing a socialist state. They’ll send goon squads to invade homes, excuse me, state property, confiscate all firearms, accoutrements, accessories, and ammo, arrest you, spouse/significant other, and back to 2 generations. Kids will be spared because they have been subjugated by Liberal indoctrination at what used to be academic intuitions and public schools to fulfill their roles as incapable and underproductive members of a collective society.

    • Evil October 5, 2018, 10:32 am

When did the federal bump stock ban happen? Where is my national ccw repricrocity? Couldn’t get it through with both houses of Congress AND the executive branch? If not now, when will this happen? How about the suppressor legislation that went nowhere? All we have gotten from this regime is a bump stock ban, when they had the chance to move in a much better direction. They have actively blocked the “pendulum “ from swinging our way.

      • ENIGMA6 February 3, 2020, 9:57 am

Spot on. There should have been a concerted push to get these passed when the Republicans held both houses and the executive branch.
What happened? Lazyness of the NRA? Ineptitude? I really don’t know but I’d like to see an answer. Where they to busy selecting$50K suits for Lapierre to care?
In another note, where was the NRA in the Virginia disaster?

  • Dr Motown October 4, 2018, 11:00 am

Hmmmm….will Vermonters vote in more of this nonsense next month?

  • Chastran October 4, 2018, 9:49 am
