The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearm industry, has condemned what it calls a “lawfare” campaign led by Democratic state attorneys general targeting firearm manufacturer GLOCK, Inc.
The coordinated legal action, initiated by New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, along with 13 other states and the District of Columbia, builds on a lawsuit filed by the City of Chicago with support from the Biden administration and gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety.
Accusations of Judicial Overreach
NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane described the effort as an abuse of the courts designed to sidestep federal protections for firearm manufacturers under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA).
“This is the very definition of ‘lawfare’ and should be rejected by the courts,” Keane stated. He accused the attorneys general of exploiting taxpayer dollars to pursue an “unconstitutional gun control agenda” that conflicts with federal law and legislative intent.

The lawsuit against GLOCK, Inc. alleges that the company is liable for the criminal misuse of its firearms when illegal “switches” are attached to convert semi-automatic handguns into fully automatic weapons.
However, these devices, also known as “autosears,” are not manufactured or sold by GLOCK or any other firearm manufacturer. The NSSF emphasized that these devices are typically illegal imports from China or are unlawfully made by criminals.
Federal Oversight Investigation
The U.S. House Oversight and Government Accountability Committee is currently investigating the alleged collaboration between the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, Everytown for Gun Safety, and the City of Chicago in targeting GLOCK.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has raised concerns about potential improprieties, citing statements by Everytown’s president, John Feinblatt, claiming GLOCK refused to address modifications that could prevent illegal switch use.
The NSSF argues that the lawsuit misrepresents the facts, noting GLOCK’s ongoing cooperation with law enforcement to combat illegal activity involving these devices.
A Broader Agenda?
The NSSF views this legal strategy as part of a larger effort to undermine federal protections for firearm manufacturers. The PLCAA prohibits lawsuits seeking to hold gun makers liable for the criminal misuse of their products.
The NSSF previously praised the House Oversight Committee’s efforts to investigate the matter, calling it a necessary check on an administration they claim is advancing a gun control agenda through improper means.
The foundation is urging the courts to reject what it characterizes as frivolous claims and to uphold the legal protections enshrined in the PLCAA, warning that such efforts could set dangerous precedents for lawful industries.
