NJ Star-Ledger Editorial Board Blasts 2A as a ‘Curse’

The second amendment is a “curse,” according to the editorial board of the New Jersey Star-Ledger in an op/ed published on Tuesday.

The opinion piece went on to claim that 300 people are shot each day in the U.S.

“Meanwhile, in America, we continue to bleed daily, with an average of more than 300 people shot every 24 hours, including 22 children and teens,” the article stated.

While citing those statistics, the editorial board failed to break them down. According to Fox News, the CDC performed a study on gun violence last year but removed self-defense statistics to appease anti-gun activists.

While the statement that 300 people are shot every day can be supported, the absence of detail could prove to be problematic for the publication which has drastically shrunk over the last decade due to changing media trends.

The board claims that the June 2022 ruling from SCOTUS makes it easier for anyone to bring lawsuits against the state for any attempt by the governor to “sharply limit where guns can be carried in New Jersey.”

“Where you have fewer guns and stricter laws, you have fewer gun injuries and deaths, research has shown. Yet while most people are solidly on his side, the law may not withstand legal challenges,” the article stated.

The editorial board suggests we use Canada as a model for gun control in the US.

“They have no Second Amendment, no constitutional right to gun ownership. Guns are treated the same as any other consumer good that the government can regulate,” the editorial board stated in the article.

NJ radio personality, Harry Hurley, took issue with the op/ed and responded with his own opinion on the WPG website

“To call the 2nd Amendment a “curse” is an outrageous and unserious comment. It’s also radical in nature,” Hurley said.

Hurley offered his perspective on whether or not the SCOTUS decision had a negative effect on gun safety legislation.

“It doesn’t make it harder for the New Jersey state legislature to pass gun safety legislation,” Hurley said. “What it does is make it hard to subvert a constitutionally provided right.”

The Star-Ledger editorial board argued that the 2nd amendment is no longer applicable because gun violence is a public health and safety issue.

“The core rationale is that we need guns for self-defense, but what we have is a public policy in which nearly 49,000 people a year are killed by guns and nearly 400 million firearms flood our streets – more than one for every citizen,” the article stated.

Hurley took umbrage with the statement and called the 2nd Amendment “unambiguous.”

“In Canada, they have the governmental authority to restrict gun ownership in any manner of their choosing,” Hurley lamented. “Conversely, in The United States of America, the right to bear arms is a Constitutionally protected right and not a privilege.”

If these people are thinking it’s better in Canada, they should all pack up and move there !!!

Somehow I don’t think that the Newark / New Jersey Star _ Ledger (I’m old enough to remember the real name of the paper) would appreciate us declaring that the First Amendment is a “curse”.

Its the First which gives “journalists” all those special rights to defame, libel and slander folks without , in far too many states, allowing victims of “journalists” to sue for damages.

Sure gives the “journalists” an oportunity to make a lot of money, though.

Guess its just a matter of who’s ox is being gored.

“consumer good that the government can regulate”, These words should scare the hell out of any true blue American. The board/writer of this piece must be considered anti-American

The second amendment enforces all the other amendments, without it the rest are just words on a piece of paper with no teeth.

The biggest problem with this is that the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with self defense. The founding fathers realized that right was ‘natural’ right thus did not need to be enumerated. The 2nd Amendment ensures the people have the tools to defend themselves and if necessary, the ability to remove the government should it overstep it’s authority. Of course their supposed study that finds Cites with strictest laws has fewest gun crimes is ridiculous. Most of the cities with the strictest laws have the most crime. Krinkov not sure what your issue with Hurley is (evident by your remark connecting him to Biden). Sounds like he was opposing the NJ Star-Liar.

It appears that at the federal level 2A rights and constitutional carry are only extended to violent offenders!
