A landmark change in Nebraska’s firearm laws went into effect this month, permitting residents aged 21 and over to carry concealed weapons without the need for a permit.
This change comes as a result of Legislative Bill 77, which Gov. Jim Pillen ratified earlier this year.
Before this significant legal transformation, obtaining a concealed carry permit in Nebraska necessitated multiple steps.
Residents had to undergo a criminal background check, pay a $100 fee, and complete an eight to 16-hour gun safety course, as Omaha.com reported.

Governor Jim Pillen, during the bill’s signing ceremony, expressed his commitment to protecting Nebraskans’ constitutional rights.
“Signing this bill upholds the promise I made to voters to protect our constitutional rights and promote commonsense, conservative values,” said Gov. Pillen back in April.
He was accompanied by the bill’s lead sponsor, Sen. Tom Brewer, along with other state senators.

Senator Brewer, an ardent advocate for the legislation, emphasized the significance of the change.
“Nebraskans should not have to pay the government a fee or ask permission for constitutional rights,” said Sen. Brewer. “This bill finally delivers on the promises in Nebraska and United States constitutions. I am proud to help Nebraska join twenty-six of our sister states in removing this obstacle to the right to keep and bear arms.”
As Nebraska enters a new chapter in its firearm legislation history, the state remains closely watched by both proponents and critics of gun rights.
With that said, 26 other states having already adopted Constitutional Carry without descending into chaos, it’s likely that the Cornhusker State will also navigate this change smoothly.
