As you might imagine, there are a few gun nerds lurking in the online shadows of GunsAmerica. We geek out over some strange things, sometimes. We each seem to have our own niches, but there’s one thing we have all come together on–the Super Match. This is the ultimate production model M1A. If you are looking for a rifle that pushed the limits of the platform, here it is. And Springfield Armory is giving one away.
The Super Match takes the old-school M1A aesthetic to the logical extremes for competition. The oversized stock is still evocative of the old battle rifle, but the barrel is as heavy as a barrel can be for competition. This one has the McMillian fiberglass stock, and it is heavy–and the receiver is lugged in the rear.
That combined weight of the stock and the barrel make for a very steady platform. While the Standard M1A offers very controllable recoil, the Super Match is like a glass-flat lake surface first thing in the morning. The rifle is so steady that I was able to shoot without the typical loss of sight picture I experience with the .308 platform rifles. For competition stages that require speed, the Super Match’s ability to get on target quickly is unsurpassed.
And that’s what it is all about. The sooner you are back on target, the sooner you can begin working on the other fundamentals needed to get the small chunk of lead to go where you want it to go. It is stable enough to shoot standing, and it is easy to get behind when shooting prone.
This was a fun review to do. I’ve always wanted to run one of these. But I was a bit nervous with the rifle. I tend to baby expensive things. This isn’t a gun that you’ll toss into the bed of a pickup. Not that there’s anything about the gun that’s especially delicate. I get that feeling from some chassis systems. The Super Match is just the opposite. It can certainly take any kind of abuse you could throw at it.
This is simply the best tool available for those who want to test their skills. It is a 1 MOA gun, after-all. And if you can master the fundamentals, this gun will keep pace with your abilities.

One of the fines rilfes ever build, I carry this weapon in Vietnam and it saved my bacon more than once when the M16 would fire. My M1A1 always fired. I loved this weapon.
somehow, someway, someday (if only in Heaven) I’m gonna have a M1A Super Match rear lugged bedded in a black or camo McMillian stock. My “Loaded” M1A’s have turned some impressive scores, I just want that 60X this rifle will bring. I’m ready to strap it on and never leave it alone.
