The mainstream media doesn’t like gun culture. I know, I know, this is not a new revelation, but I thought I’d point out some recent examples of how they mischaracterize us and malign us as if we’re all knuckle-dragging, tinfoil-hat-wearing, mouth breathers.
Let me start with the most obvious example, the call too ban modern sporting rifles by The New York Times. Although they don’t outright say it, the editorial board suggests that those of us who keep an AR-15 on hand are fundamentally indecent. In other words, we are obscene, dirty, filthy, rude, coarse, naughty, vulgar, gross, crude, lewd because we keep and bear black rifles.
Certain kinds of weapons, like the slightly modified combat rifles used in California, and certain kinds of ammunition, must be outlawed for civilian ownership. It is possible to define those guns in a clear and effective way and, yes, it would require Americans who own those kinds of weapons to give them up for the good of their fellow citizens.
What better time than during a presidential election to show, at long last, that our nation has retained its sense of decency?
It’s in that last line, “sense of decency.” Again we are indecent (or pick whichever synonym you’d like) because we possess a widely popular and commonly owned tool for self-defense or hunting or sports shooting or for no other reason than it’s our Constitutional right. We are the problem, don’t you see!
But for many in the media, it doesn’t stop at indecent. For many, it goes much further. Perhaps one of the most egregious examples is Adam Gopnik of The New Yorker who blamed NRA supporters, in part, for those killed at the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
The people who fight and lobby and legislate to make guns regularly available are complicit in the murder of those children. They have made a clear moral choice: that the comfort and emotional reassurance they take from the possession of guns, placed in the balance even against the routine murder of innocent children, is of supreme value. Whatever satisfaction gun owners take from their guns—we know for certain that there is no prudential value in them—is more important than children’s lives. Give them credit: life is making moral choices, and that’s a moral choice, clearly made.
In other words, we killed those children because we exercise our Second Amendment right. There is blood on our hands, simply because we own firearms. It’s guilt by mere possession of private property. Nevermind the fact that we’re law-abiding and responsible. We’re child killers all the same. On a side note, statistically speaking, folks with firearms kill fewer children than folks with swimming pools. So, if gun owners are child killers, what does that say about those with swimming pools? Even more concerning (sarcasm), what does that say about gun owners who also have swimming pools? Take about moral depravity!
Gun owner = bad guy. Yes, that’s how the media sees us. Alan Korwin, a GunsAmerica contributor, talks about this a lot. It’s present in the language they use. “Active shooter” for example. On a Saturday or Sunday, I’m — technically speaking — an active shooter. I’m at the range, shooting. I’m sure you’re an active shooter from time to time. But when those words are placed in a headline, they take on a whole new meaning, i.e. sociopath with a gun. Yet, why doesn’t the media call it what it is, crazy person with a gun? Why is it “active shooter”? Or “gunman” (another term perverted by the media)?
It’s all part of an agenda to demonize gun owners. I know, I’m starting to sound like the pundits on conservative talk radio. But there is an institutional hostility toward gun owners in the media. Some more examples? How about the Zimmerman audio tape that was edited by NBC to make him sound racist? Remember that?
Here is the actual transcript:
- Dispatcher: Sanford Police Department.
- Zimmerman: Hey we’ve had some break-ins in my neighborhood, and there’s a real suspicious guy, uh, it’s Retreat View Circle, um, the best address I can give you is 111 Retreat View Circle. This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.
- Dispatcher: OK, and this guy is he white, black, or Hispanic?
- Zimmerman: He looks black.
Now compare that to how NBC News actually reported it. “He looks like he’s up to no good, he looks black.” Couple this with the early misreports that George Zimmerman was a “white guy” and one can see how the media hews to the narrative that gun owners are all racist white guys.
Again, I’m not making this up. This is how the media views us. Need more evidence? Mark Morford, a columnist for SFGate, defined gun owners in an article last year, thusly:
You’re a scared white person, almost certainly male. You do not live in a major city, or near a university or intellectual hub of any note, nor have you ever traveled very far from your home town, much less out of state or anywhere further than, say, Mexico. Once. And that was enough.
You do not read complicated books. You do not like new or weird things. You watch lots of TV, mostly Fox News, which rejoices in showing you endless images of angry foreigners and minorities in pain: tear gas explosions, fights in the streets, looting, this time involving sad, small-town black people in Ferguson, all of them protesting the acquittal of that murderous white cop…
So, let’s recap, gun owners are scared, racist, white vulgarians who are complicit in the murder of children. I want to highlight a few more examples before I conclude. Like, how often do you see a defensive gun use story make the nightly news? You know, a story of a good guy with a gun protecting himself from an armed robber, home invader, carjacker, murderer? Almost never. Yet that happens at least as often as the opposite, a bad guy with a gun perpetrates a crime. See, the media only paints one picture: gun owners are bad guys. It’s the default setting. It’s the pre-set narrative.
Recently, a 46-year-old IRS customer service worker in Massachusetts was arrested by police for illegally possessing several firearms. The guy was allegedly wearing a tinfoil hat, according to the report. And he was “agitated” when police came to confiscate his firearms, arguing that it was “his natural right to have guns to protect him home.”
Police removed a “large amount of ammunition and supplies to manufacture ammunition” but based on the photo in the article, it simply showed a few boxes of .22LR, a bag of brass, and bare projectiles which were not even completed ammo. Perhaps the guy is simply a reloader — and not the flag-waving psycho the report implies he is. The story is still developing, but my point is that the media’s portrayal of this guy is unfair. Not all the facts are known, and he has yet to have his day in court. But because it’s a guy with guns, the small-town rag can’t resist making him out to be a weirdo.
Lastly, and I only touched on this a bit so far, but the way in which the media lambasts the National Rifle Association is impossible to ignore. I mean, can you imagine journalists writing about PETA or Planned Parenthood or Black Lives Matter they way in which they write about the NRA and its members?
In an article titled, “NRA TV: A Day in the Life of an American Gun Nut,” Olivia Nuzzi for The Daily Beast described a video featuring NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre in the following manner:
Wayne LaPierre stood in front of an artificial backdrop the color of a cartoon midnight sky. He was dressed like a funeral conductor, in a black suit, white shirt and dark purple tie, but he looked like the corpse. Beneath his rimless glasses and permanently furrowed brow, his face was hollow and his skin was gray, perhaps an effect of the grim topic he was preparing to broach.
Admittedly, Wayne is not the most camera-friendly personality. But I find the imagery in that paragraph to be appalling. Come on? Comparing LaPierre to a corpse? Suggesting he has a look of indelible consternation? A hollow face and gray skin? You get what she’s doing here, right? She saying that LaPierre is the Grim Reaper. He is death personified.
Yes, that is how the mainstream media views Wayne LaPierre. He is the Grim Reaper. Is it unfair? Heck yes. The NRA’s main mission is to secure a constitutional right. It wants to protect a fundamental freedom. It wants to safeguard the one failsafe we have against tyranny, our right to keep and bear arms. An organization more concerned with protecting the civil liberties of Americans, I can’t think of one. Yet, the media’s response is to wholeheartedly demonize the NRA.
In truth, I can go on and on with examples. But what’s the point? You know it and I know it, and any moderately aware individual knows it too. The media doesn’t like guns, gun owners or gun culture. I suppose the next question is why? Why doesn’t the mainstream media like us? Why are they so hellbent on portraying us in a negative light? Why do they want to perpetuate the tinfoil hat, racist, crude, backwoods stereotype? What do they get by contributing to the destruction of the Second Amendment?

Slavery was ended after the United States was founded, that’s literally over 2000 years of recorded history, with “the enlightened” believing that anyone who wasn’t them was less than human.

I marvel ay the frequency at which I observe over-educated, rich, White liberals sneaking out of the closet to attend my gun shows, to buy that evil tool that they can’t then admit to owning. The last couple of NPR listeners (husband/wife) couldn’t believe it when I told them they were approved for their purchase. “Approved? Why wouldn’t we be– we have money?” I had to explain that the forms they just filled out and the website I just put their information into was for an FBI background check. The look on their faces was priceless. “But this is a GUN SHOW!” “I thought there were no background checks at gun shows.” They probably learned more in the next 5 minute conversation than they did getting their last masters degrees.
I support any gun banner who can demonstrate how their brilliant plan to remove guns from society will turn out differently from the prohibition of alcohol. The key word here is demonstrate, not wish or think. The Anti-gun movement is the crusade against alcohol re-incarnate. Both movements were driven by concerns of health – alcohol with its alcoholism, and guns with their accompanying “mass shooting” events. Both alcohol and guns were legal items deeply embedded and interwoven in American society. So what can the history of Prohibition teach us? Trying to remove something deeply embedded in out society is impossible; sweeping legislation only served to make huge swaths of Americans criminals overnight; and at the end of the day criminals had all the access they wanted to booze while the law abiding did not.. We also learned America society became much more violent when we attempt to significantly alter American society by legislation rather than make changes in the laws that reflect existing and real shifts in American culture. While alcohol represent the individual pursuit of pleasure, guns represent the individual’s pursuit of safety, and under no conceivable stretch of the imagination will the need and concern for safety ever be eliminated from any society of man. So again I say: I support any anti-gunner who can demonstrate how removing guns from society will be any different than the prohibition of alcohol. The answer is it’s impossible, but it sure is fun to watch the anti-gunners beat themselves over the head with frustration when their arguments fall apart as they seek to think them thru believing if they just say it loud enough and long enough, they may just have a convert on the line.
The dialog scares me to death, it’s pure Pravda. Somehow, over the years, liberals have relieved themselves of the responsibility of critical thinking. They can say absolutely anything, no matter how ignorant, make up any number, without fear of challenge, and make any fallacious comparison, without any link what so ever, knowing that they will never be challenged by their peers in the media. They seem completely unaware of their own direct attacks on the first amendment through their fiendish assaults on the free speech of those with whom they disagree. They seem oblivious to the threat they pose to the Bill of Rights in their crusade against threats to their Waldon Pond fantasy Neverland utopian perception of the perfect society. All the result of their fundamental denial of basic human nature, and their belief that the human animal is somehow capable of perfection if only he is able to evolve from his baser character. I suppose that what frightens me most about this pure communist thinking, is their denial that in the event that they were able to achieve their utopian goals, that they would somehow avoid being the victims of their own flawed ideals. The fact that these people have the standing that they enjoy currently in society just grieves me no end, for if this is the acceptable level of discourse in today’s culture, than we had best stay armed to the hilt, and replace the tin with kevlar, for we are really and truly through as a republic.

I actually keep ties with a few people on the other side just to see (and roll my eyes) at the illogical discussion? There is no other topic (except maybe climate change) that inspires such blatant misrepresentation. We must also freely admit that there are perfect examples of the stereotypical persons as the media wants to paint all gun owners.
My argument with social liberals is just this. If you are so frightened of Constitutional freedoms, please avow yourselves of due process and amend the Constitution. While they are at it, might as well just shred the whole document if they are being honest? I mean who needs freedoms under our current socialist agenda?
Until someone can guarantee a process whereby criminal (including socialist politicians) are disarmed, I will vehemently continue the argument, and denounce social engineering. My niece is vehemently anti gun. Her constant posts on Facebook are incredibly insulting. It goes way beyond merely insulting the gun owners’ breeding, education and social status. She flatly states that all gun owners are murderers. Of course, she believes in the right of a woman to murder unborn children.

If an organization were to characterize the various media outlets in a manner similar to that which 2nd amendment supporters are pigeon-holed by “news media”, i.e. – harmful for the common well-being of the general population, there would be cries of outrage from them all. And yet, they are so brainwashed and deceived by all the “intelligencia” that they refuse to admit any similarity, or the possibility that the 1st amendment could ever be endangered. History has proven time after time that when those in power have personal political agendas, their version of social”progress”, are hindered by civil liberty laws, or in the US, Constitional law, they do whatever they deem necessary to remove those hindrances, civil liberties be damned. If you believe I am just spewing bs in this regard, ask the remaining Cherokee tribe members, or any of the remaining plains “Indian” tribes. It seems that media representatives are fine with supporting the tearing down of the very document which protects their right to be idiots, as long as it doesn’t tear down that right also. To address the question as to what the media gets from this insane support of the anti-gun agenda, they receive warehouses full of cash in the form of advertising dollars from the corporate conglomerates who espouse this agenda.
One method we as gun owners can do to help remedy this situation is very powerful in that it removes the means to advance their ideology. It is called “boycott”. Research the products we purchase/use and dig to find the corporate agendas of their producers, then refuse to buy/use them and write letters, send e-mails, and make phone calls to these corporations explaining why we don’t support them financially. We as gun owners are a huge purchasing block and the loss of revenue to these corporate entities will make s gigantic impact on their ability to continue to fund this insane ideology.

IGunny51, you have correctly identified one of the reasons that the Newspapers vilify anyone who enforces his or her right to keep and carry arms. Those newspapers, indeed, stir up the controversy about the Second Amendment to sell their “news reports”.
However, the last question in this article by S. H. Blannelberry, needs to be further addressed. “What do they get by contributing to the destruction of the Second Amendment?” The answer is as clear as the newspaper reporter’s mentality. They are liberals and like all socialists, they understand that the Constitution is a road block to their idea of Utopia.

The Second Amendment is the only part of the Bill of Rights that provides the right of the people to keep and bear arms against the universal tendency of all governments to abuse the inherent rights of the people. Newspaper reporters are the useful dullards of the liberal elite. If they weren’t liberals when they enrolled in the schools of journalism, the professors indoctrinated them to be so. These “reporters of truth” understand that the government cannot abuse the rights of an armed populace. That understanding and the need to sell their garbage are the main reasons that they froth at the mouth while writing about a competent, law-abiding adult citizen who has the audacity to enforce his or her right to arms.
Almost all of the media people are afflicted with the mental disease of liberalism. And like all wild-eyed liberals, they are unable, or unwilling to honestly discuss the true intent of the Second Amendment. George Washington identified that intent when he wrote the following. “A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.”
We don’t read those papers in Texas. We are a few hours away from the utter chaos of Mexico & it is all coming our way. We are staying well armed; this unites Democrats and Republicans on this issue in Texas. Most of the liberals in Texas have a gun their purse or truck. Hey Gunny, agree, but? We have a local news outlet that is blatantly biased. They post stories every day that are obviously financed and focused on painting gun-nuts with Bloomberg methods. They even went so far as to post an interactive Google map with license holder households identified down to a few feet. Perfect for focused home burglaries.
We called them out and they lost a major advertiser as a result. But they go right on portraying the responsible gun owner as socially awkward in every story anyway?

I live in the Blue Ridge mtns. of VA, redneck originally referred to farmers and outdoor workers, having a sunburnt neck, hard to imagine coal miners experiencing this!
Actually the term Redneck dates back to the 1930’s depression era Appalachia. Long story short the mine owners were trying to essentially turn the miners into glorified slaves. The miners went on strike. The striking miners wore red bandannas, scarfs, etc, around their kneck a as a show of solidarity. The mine owners sent in the Pinkertons to break the strike, very illegally. The miner fought back with legally owned weapons & pushed back the Pinkertons. The state called in the national guard at that point & once the guard commenced arial bombardment of the miners they finally lost the battle but because of their resistance won several important concessions which led eventually to several federal labor laws we have today in place to protect workers.
So I guess in summation, call me a Redneck all day long.
As a firearms owner and strong advocate for the Second Amendment I certainly can share umbrage over all of the anti-gun quotes posted in this story… Yes, they are certainly insulting, stereotypical and just plain untrue… As a retired fulltime newspaper reporter, however, I am also aware that our side of the ledger has its share of idiots who go out of their way to reinforce those images. We write letters to the editor that are nothing more than tirades that have the appearance of being written by juveniles. We shout and scream at rallies, engage in getting-in-the-face tactics. We also are less than charitable when it comes to correcting local print, Internet, and video stories that clearly demonstrate ignorance about both firearms and firearms owners. That cannot be if we are to succeed in – if not reversing – than at least making a media venue blink when it comes to reporting on firearms. And the worst of the lot is the NRA (full disclosure: I am proudly a NRA member as is my wife). Maybe the organization believes that by ignoring a request for comment is a “hands-in-the-arm” way of saying it will be misquoted. Or maybe it’s the organization’s way of telling its rank-and-file members that the media never listens. The simple truth is, when a reporter seeks a response for any story – doesn’t even have to be about firearms or gun control – and doesn’t get one the piece will be written or aired. I was told on more than one occasion when I sought a quote for a person who subsequently declined to give one that I would thus not have a story to write. Uh, no; that’s not how any media outlet works. Believe me, a reporter will report, and if the “other side” declines to provide a quote or agree to an interview than the story will go forward as a one-horse race. Yeah, it really is that simple.
I believe the NRA should buy print and air time more than they do. I see their stuff on channels like the Outdoor Channel and the Sportsmans channel but all of us that believe in our rights already are watching these channels. Maybe a entry into nightly news?

i get my info from the tv stations, yes Fox news along with BBC, CNN and local non-biased tv stations. and then make my own decision about the stories.

We gun owners must stop supporting the media outlets that support infringing on our rights. I cancelled the Denver Post because the articles and editorial opinions clashed with my views, I also do not watch CNN, MSNBC and others for the same reasons.
We also must support organizations like the NRA and others that defend our rights. the NRA is not perfect but they carry the most clout in Washington. I would love to see the NRA attack libs in areas such as voting rights and immigration/criminal policies. For example, libs have fought states requiring proof of id to vote and labeled it as an effort to discourage voting, but couldn’t it be said that showing id and a background check is a discouragement when it comes to purchasing a weapon? States like Colorado require you to pay for your background check, could you hear the uproar if you had to pay to vote.
Also, I would love for it to be publicized more by the gun rights groups that as the administration lets more illegals in the country and states like California lets more prisoners out early due to overcrowding, we are less safe and need greater access to concealed and open carry.

Gun owners and supporters need to spend their hard earned money on the papers and news outlets that report the truth and those few that do not discriminate against us. We are a huge percentage of those who actually spend money on our searchfor the truth and maybe if we would boycott those who choose to lie, then maybe something good could come of this. If we dont stand up for ourselves no one will. We are under attack everyday by those who seek to steal our God given rights that this “free” country was founded upon. We must act now to secure a future for our children and ourselves!
We need to pressure the Cable Companies to stop forcing us to support Media Outlets and programming we don’ t want to support. Why am I paying for literally hundreds of channels I do not want just to get the 10 or 12 that I do want? I realize I would pay more per channel but would get what I want not what THEY want. I was one of the first I knew who was a “Cord cutter” years back….I’m thinking its time to once again dump cable and watch less TV. I could spend the money saved on Range time and Ammo!
The way the media describes gun owners or people who support the 2nd amendment would be hilarious if it were not propaganda focused on taking away our constitutional rights as American citizens. Medical mistakes are documented to be the primary cause of at least 100,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. The incentive in medicine, for obvious reasons of malpractice suit risk, is to minimize or hide errors. Do you hear the media raving to outlaw doctors every day? Thousands of people are murdered by unarmed assailants, bare hands. You don’t hear them screaming about that. As much as I dislike stuff that sounds like tin foil hat conspiracy theories, the most similar events I can find in history of disarming civilians generally seem to lead to tyranny. Some cases lead to genocide. Obviously a government has less to fear from the populace if the populace is unarmed. The U.S. government is supposed to be ‘We the People’ or as Lincoln put it, “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more as Reagan mentioned, “The solution is not the government, government is the problem.” And in our case it appears that the major media has become the official propaganda arm of the government. When the popular opinion seems to be that some people should not be able to enjoy the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution, there are serious problems that need to be addressed. As a little side note, when the media and many government officials think that some laws must be ignored, other laws only apply to certain people and some of us are evil for exercising our constitutional rights, things are getting a bit scary.

I was at the indoor range yesterday and my buddy pointed out there’s never been a mass shooting at any gun range.
I saw a video of two separate gun rallys competing the other day. An anti-second amendment rally member refereed to guns as toys, saying “no one wants to come take your toys away” to a pro-second amendment rally member.
I was like WTW?? Toys? I was in the ARMY, guns aren’t toys. That anti’s attitude is poisonous, and shameful, and a diss to all the people who have been killed with guns, and-or lost their lives in service to the Republic.

I do offer one minor correction that is, hopefully, a more accurate description taught to me by my father. You claim the Times writers are uneducated. I think they ARE educated but only to the exact level our liberal institutions guide them. My father correctly assesses them as “educated beyond their level of intelligence!”

You are so right, Abner T. Vote and support the NRA. Open carry has just gone in to effect here in Texas, and I can only hope that most of the people with a CHL will still carry concealed. The liberal journalists in my local newspaper are already whining about how the sight of a gun will make them feel uncomfortable. I don’t believe we can ever change those type of peoples minds re guns, and certainly not by clomping around town with our guns showing. It is not a stereotype that the media is trying to propose and/or perpetuate. Stereotypes are primarily based in a majority of real word facts, just often a bit exaggerated. The majority of gun owners do not meet this demented personification (not even close). There are more doctors killing way more people via malpractice than depraved shooters. No, the media wants to vilify gun owners because they realistically represent the only thing standing in the way of their idea of ‘progress’; similar to the Bilderberg’s elitist view of things (many folks think the media and Bilderbergs are entwined if not the same group anyway). Merely by existing, gun owners are doing exactly what the Founding Fathers wanted. They represent an obstacle, a bulwark, a ‘final solution’ against any government entities that try to violently convert our (pseudo) democracy into tyranny.
