Man Sues After Polling Place Told Him to Remove NRA Hat

in 2nd Amendment – R2KBA, Authors, S.H. Blannelberry, This Week

An Atlanta man filed a lawsuit Monday against Douglas County election officials after a polling attendant in October told him to remove his National Rifle Association hat before being allowed to cast a vote.

While Bundy Cobb, the hat owner and NRA instructor, ended up removing his hat so that he could vote, he claims in the lawsuit that his civil rights were violated, according to MyFoxAtlanta.

From the story:

Bundy says he was told he could not cast his vote at a Douglasville polling location unless he removed his hat, which identified him as an NRA instructor. Cobb told FOX 5 in October that he removed the hat so he could vote.

The Southeastern Legal Foundation filed the lawsuit Monday in federal court in Atlanta on behalf of Cobb.

The lawsuit says elections officials told Cobb to remove his NRA instructor hat inside the polling place. Cobb says elections officials told him the NRA is seen as being associated with the Republican party so the hat could be considered an illegal campaign material.

Douglas County attorney Ken Bernard did not immediately return an email seeking comment Tuesday.

The lawsuit challenges what it calls a per se ban on clothing referencing the NRA at county polling places.

Bundy told FOX 5 the issue wasn’t about politics, but rather freedom of speech and expression.

I proudly wore my NRA hat (2″ tall BOLD gold letters) into my assigned polling station in Stark Co,,Ohio during this most recent election cycle. No boogeymen accosted me -suggesting- that it might be inappropriate (or to hide it), and I will absolutely confirm that my area is no bastion of Republicanism (Democrats under/behind every available rock around here-just like everywhere else).
I guess we’re just made of sturdier stuff here in the Heartland, where the opposing political sides aren’t afraid of personal expression, or a historically politically blind civil rights association (i.e. the National Rifle Association).

had to be dummycrats running the polling place

Just dumb. How could anyone be so dumb? No Democrat ever owned a gun or belonged to the NRA?
Just too dumb, really dumb, really and truly rock solid dumb.

I am a life long Conservative Dem who has never blindly voted a party ticket nor followed a “party line”. I am a devoted gun owner/ collector as well as a former weapons and tactics instructor with the U.S. Army. I’m also an NRA lifer as was my Democrat father and grandfather. Brass ( or is it B-ass) you just made one of the most stupid statements I’ve read in a long time. You probably think “Obama-care” and the Affordable care act are two different things. Get real and get educated before making yourself self look like a fool. I wouldn’t doubt you are one of the mass hysteria ammo horders that helped cause the shortage awhile back because a Dem President was going to take it all away. what a BOOB

        Hey Scott,
Nice to hear a comment from someone who isn’t following like a herded sheep. Why the NRA has aligned itself with the republican party is really a shame. Both parties are doing very little for the people, but the republican party is the absolute worst enemy of the working American citizen there has ever been. So many people don’t know anything about the history of this country, but it does not keep them from running their mouths. Healthcare in this county if you work for a living is a cruel hoax. Obama care as it’s detractors call it, is the best and only step in the right direction I’ve seen. The politicians, mostly republicans, are payed by the insurance companies to kill it at any cost.

Apparantly Scott you are not smart enough to recognize sarcasm. Brass was obviously saying that some democrats are gun owners and do indeed belong to the NRA. So actually it is YOU who have made one of the most stupid statements in a long time.

Any clothing that displays an organization with a perceived political position should also be restricted from the poling places which should include Levi Strauss the NFL et cetera.

That would eliminate most forms of clothing which seems like a bad idea.

Wonder what the policy is on NRA tattoos…

America, it’s not over and you had better wake up, your “Constitution” is slowly being ripped apart.

I wonder if they would do that to another civil rights group like the naacp?

  • Mike December 15, 2014, 10:08 am

The Saturday in December when we had our run-off elections here in Louisiana, I was scheduled to work at our range on Honey Island. I planned to vote on the way to the range as I would pass right by the polling place. I had heard about this incident, so to avoid causing a scene I didn’t wear my RSO shirt into the polling place because of the NRA patch on the chest.
