Rifle specialist JARD Inc. just introduced a cartridge-style drop-in set trigger for AR-pattern firearms. Set triggers are popular with competition shooters and hunters, especially long-range shooters, but they’re conspicuously absent in the AR market.

Set triggers let users pre-stage their triggers, virtually eliminating take-up and creep, and typically have a very light pull. JARD’s set trigger works as both a conventional semi-automatic trigger as well as a set trigger with standard AR-pattern firearms and other guns that use AR trigger systems.

In standard semi-automatic mode the JARD AR Set Trigger has a relatively normal trigger pull weight of about 4 pounds. That’s light compared to basic military-style triggers but pretty average for aftermarket and enhanced triggers.

But with the trigger set, the pull weight drops to just 13 ounces. After firing and cycling the trigger resets to the standard pull weight.

To set the trigger the user takes the safety off, then pushes the trigger forward. The trigger shoe is scalloped on both sides to give shooters a surface to push against.

Once the trigger is set only a tiny amount of force will engage it and fire. If the shooter does not want to fire, the trigger can be reset by putting the safety on and pulling the trigger afterward.

The AR Set Trigger is machined from billet aluminum and has a black anodized finish. The system uses set screws to hold the hammer and trigger pins in place and prevent them from spinning or walking loose.

Although it’s a new product JARD is a solid name in the trigger business. The company makes a wide range of aftermarket triggers for many different firearms and they’re known for quality and reliability.

And the JARD AR Set Trigger is competitively priced at $220. There are tons of aftermarket triggers that cost a lot more and don’t offer the unique functionality that a set trigger does.

While a 13-ounce trigger pull is very light by AR standards, it’s a little heavy by even other JARD set trigger standards, which can have trigger pulls in the 3- to 8-ounce range once set.

This could be to strike a balance between what AR shooters expect out of their triggers, even light triggers, or to improve the reliability of the system across a wider range of AR-pattern firearms. Time will tell if JARD offers the AR Set Trigger in other pull weight options.

As it stands, for $220 this is a relatively inexpensive way to potentially improve the practical accuracy of a long-range, target, or hunting AR-based gun.

With ARs becoming more popular in a lot of different shooting sports and disciplines, JARD’s AR Set Trigger is sure to expand the AR’s potential even further.
