“Quickly, we were face to face with a male suspect who was armed with a knife. He also claimed he had a bomb,” explained Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno.

At the time, the suspect had taken two hostages. “He started to put one of the hostages in a headlock and he had the knife to her throat.,” he added.

The situation escalated rapidly, leading to the intervention of the SWAT team.

This decisive action was part of a meticulously trained procedure for handling such high-stakes situations.

“Firing through barriers is a trained and routinely practiced skill by the Lee County Sheriff’s Special Operations unit snipers. The .308-caliber bullet used is specifically selected due to its known ballistic reliability traveling through intermediate barriers,” noted a spokesperson for the department.

Following the shooting, the team deployed flashbangs and swiftly moved in to secure the hostages and ensure the area was safe.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the men and women of law enforcement today, my family members today, the SWAT team today,” said Sheriff Marceno during the initial press conference.

“How you train is how you perform, and this is exactly what we train for,” he concluded, affirming that the safety of the hostages was their utmost priority.
