Human Nature, Assault Weapons, and the Massacre at Wounded Knee

Just because you wear a uniform or have a laminated card with your picture on it doesn’t make you any more morally laudable than any other typical American citizen.

Estimated reading time: 12 minutes

I used to wear a military uniform. I drew my paycheck from Uncle Sam. I even had a laminated card with my picture on it that made me official. I was the product of a relentless selection process and underwent countless hours of intensive formalized training.

At the end of the day, however, I was still just a guy. I wore some unique clothes and had a lot of responsibility, but I was innately no better or worse than any other typical American. A distinctive uniform, time in a classroom or on a range, and a special ID card do not synergistically shape a person’s character. Now hold that thought…

Terror in the Heartland

This is John Snowling. Nobody had any idea he was a homicidal maniac until he just woke up one day and was one.

On the evening of 23 August 23, retired Ventura police Sergeant John Snowling entered Cook’s Corner, a well-known biker bar in Trabuco Canyon, California. While the term “biker bar” has a rough connotation, Cook’s Corner was not like that. It had a reputation for being family-friendly. This particular Wednesday evening was Spaghetti Night—a flat eight bucks for a generous serving.

Snowling approached his estranged wife Marie who was out eating with friends and, without fanfare or preamble, shot her in the face with a handgun. By the time Orange County deputies gunned him down, Snowling had also shot another eight uninvolved bystanders, killing three. Snowling’s wife survived.

Snowling arrived that evening with two semiautomatic handguns, a revolver, and a shotgun—all legally purchased. Seven responding deputies fired at least seventy-five rounds bringing him down. As near as they could tell, Snowling did not know any of the other victims. He just shot the place up because he was a turd.

John Snowling, shown here on the right, was, by all accounts, a fairly effective cop in his day.

John Snowling

John Snowling was not some run-of-the-mill loser. This guy served in the Ventura Police Department for twenty-eight years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was president of the local police union. Right up until he walked into a restaurant and gunned down nine innocent people, he was one of the Good Guys.

Everyone interviewed claimed they did not see this coming. John and Marie were in the midst of a divorce, but the attorneys involved said he had been reasonable and accommodating despite the difficult circumstances. Responding deputies arrived two minutes after the first call.

This is California Governor Gavin Newsom. He does not live on the same planet I do.

Fortunately, California Governor Gavin Newsom had some helpful suggestions afterward. He urged Californians to make use of the state’s sparkly new red flag laws to temporarily remove firearms from someone who poses a threat to themselves or others. He actually said, “We must continue to strengthen, defend, and use these laws. If you see red flags, say something — and in doing so, save lives.”

Red Flags?

Did I mention that this was a twenty-eight-year veteran cop/former president of the police union who had shown no signs of instability or violence before this attack? Snowling also drove in from Ohio for the festivities. I’d be curious to know how Governor Newsom suggests somebody “red flag” that.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I do love me some cops. The young studs who ended this fight arrived 120 seconds after the 911 call. That is a freaking amazing performance. They charged in at risk of their own lives to save the patrons of Cook’s Corner. Like the overwhelming majority of police officers, those folks were innately selfless. They were heroes of the highest order. However, they were also not fundamentally different from the rest of us.

This is the Bible Abraham Lincoln used for his inauguration back in 1861. It turns out there is some pretty wise stuff in there.

Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” That’s not just a good idea, that’s the law. John Snowling wore a badge and police uniform for more than a quarter century. He was the guy who was supposed to stop stuff like this. However, the point here is not to attack cops. Quite the contrary, the point is to enable private citizens. I carry a gun whenever I am not asleep or in the shower because of the John Snowlings in the world.

La La Land

Gavin Newsom would have us believe that the reason stuff like this keeps happening is not because our post-modern society has cheapened human life and rendered Dads both obsolete and superfluous. Newson believes it is rather because the blasted NRA won’t let the US Congress enact commonsense assault weapons bans. There are around 400 people killed by murderers wielding rifles of any sort each year in America. I freely acknowledge that this represents 400 unspeakable agonizing tragedies.

However, in a nation of 328 million people, juxtapose that alongside 478,000 dead due to cigarettes and another 190,000 corpses stemming from alcohol. It never was about saving the children. It was always about disarming Americans. The rub is that we have actually tried that before, and it did not end well.

29 December 1890: Day Of A Massacre

Indian reservations were intentionally not awesome.

In the years preceding the 1890 massacre, the Lakota Sioux had been relegated to designated reservations. A proud militaristic people, the Lakota were formidable adversaries during the Indian Wars. During the years the Army outright battled the American Indians, there had been ample atrocities committed by both sides. However, according to treaties made with the federal government, the Plains Indians were promised autonomy if only they would stick to their reservations. It didn’t work out that way.

The Indian reservations were generally pretty sucky. Ideally, the Native Americans would be tucked away to themselves and not bother anybody. However, white settlers and prospectors still pushed onto Indian land looking for stuff they wanted. After years of war, the Lakota were well-armed and battle-hardened. White settlers were justifiably intimidated by them.

This is General Nelson Miles.

“Difficult Indian Problem”

Here is what General Nelson Miles, the regional Federal Army commander, had to say in a cable he sent to General John Schofield in Washington DC—”The difficult Indian problem cannot be solved permanently at this end of the line. It requires the fulfillment of Congress of the treaty obligations that the Indians were entreated and coerced into signing. They signed away a valuable portion of their reservation, and it is now occupied by white people, for which they have received nothing.

“They understood that ample provision would be made for their support; instead, their supplies have been reduced, and much of the time they have been living on half and two-thirds rations. Their crops, as well as the crops of the white people, for two years, have been almost total failures.

“The dissatisfaction is widespread, especially among the Sioux, while the Cheyenne have been on the verge of starvation, and were forced to commit depredations to sustain life. These facts are beyond question, and the evidence is positive and sustained by thousands of witnesses.”

This is a Hotchkiss mountain gun. The 7th Cavalry brought along artillery when tasked with disarming the Lakota Sioux.

On the morning of 29 December 1890, units of the US Seventh Cavalry under the command of Colonel James Forsyth moved to disarm the Lakota. It had been fourteen years since Custer and the 7th Cav got slaughtered at Little Bighorn, so I suspect all involved still rocked a little attitude. Once they arrived at the primary Lakota encampment at Wounded Knee Creek, Forsyth deployed four Hotchkiss Mountain Guns in overwatch positions and began moving through the encampment forcibly collecting firearms.

Indian Massacre

Dead Indians were buried in mass graves by American troops after the massacre at Wounded Knee.

Nobody knows how it started. Legend has it that a deaf Lakota man named Black Coyote resisted relinquishing his rifle as he had paid a great deal of money for it. Supposedly in the resulting struggle the weapon discharged. Regardless of the impetus, when the smoke cleared 7th Cavalry troops had killed more than 250 men, women, and children, many of whom they rode down and executed while they were fleeing. Another 51 were wounded, some of whom later died.

The Army awarded the Medal of Honor to twenty of the Army troops who participated in the massacre. The Medal of Honor was easier to get back then than it is today.

This is Sioux Chief Spotted Elk left frozen where he died after being gunned down by Cav troopers in the massacre.

The Sioux did not just roll over and take this. They fought back, and hard. The Lakota ultimately killed 31 soldiers and wounded another 33. However, by the time the bullets started flying many of the Sioux warriors had already been disarmed. Additionally, many of the Army casualties were later attributed to friendly fire. The cannons provided substantial tactical overmatch, yet the soldiers still did not attack until the majority of the Indians had been disarmed.

Relevance Today

America is awash to its gunwales in guns. There is no military power on earth that even comes close to the combat capability of American rednecks en masse.

There are an estimated 25-30 million “assault weapons” in circulation in America. Nobody knows what that term really means, but it is a safe bet to assume most of them are semiautomatic AR15s and AKMs. When confronted with the possibility of American citizens using AR-15s to protect themselves from a tyrannical government, President Biden laughed. He asserted that anyone hoping to resist the US government would need F-15 fighter jets. He’s said that a couple of times, which is kind of unsettling.

No offense, Mr. President, but I choose not to take self-defense advice from a guy whose tactical solution to a hypothetical home invasion was to take his double-barrel 12-bore out on the back porch and shoot up in the air. If those 25 million black rifles seem so ineffectual why not imagine what might happen if you could suddenly transport them into Russia, Iran, or North Korea? Do you think Putin, Kim, or the theocratic psychopaths who are running Iran would still be in power if you suddenly gifted their respective populations 25 million semiautomatic rifles?

China maintains a 2 million-man Army. Yeah, whatever. Bring it…

Avoiding Another Massacre

There are 482,000 troops in active service in the US Army. The North Koreans maintain 950,000 active duty soldiers. The Russians field 1.15 million, though that number is dropping by the day. The army of the People’s Republic of China is the world’s largest with 2 million troops under arms. Good for them. Armed American rednecks still outnumber the Chinese People’s Liberation Army at least 12 to 1. How do those F-15 fighter jets look now, Mr. President?

The 2nd Amendment never was about hunting or sport shooting. It was about the Massacre at Wounded Knee and psychos like John Snowling. If the Newsoms, Bidens, Schumers, and Pelosis of the world just cannot comprehend that, then I can’t help them.

As regards outlawing those 25 million assault weapons, whatever they actually are, you just can’t have them. They’re not yours to take. That is never, ever going to happen. It’s time you started focusing your energies elsewhere.

Yes, those four hundred Americans murdered every year by maniacs armed with rifles are undeniably, tragically heart-rending, but that is the horrible price we pay for no more Wounded Knee massacres. Nowadays, untold millions of armed Americans of all shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds stand ready to nip that stuff in the bud as the need arises. Molon labe.

Since people armed with AR15’s are no match for such a big powerful mighty strong government controlled military with F15’s and nukes I guess that means we can go ahead and keep our AR15’s without anyone making such a fuss about them anymore.

  • Scott June 28, 2024, 3:54 pm

I know exactly what the term “assault weapon” means. An assault weapon is a smokeless ammunition fueled, detachable magazine fed, select fire, individually man portable firearm. Some full-auto belt fed light machine-guns can be considered assault weapons as well….. and I suppose a brick or a sharp stick could be too….

  • Mike in a Truck June 25, 2024, 3:42 pm

Joe Biden,Newsome, Schumer,Pelosi,Obama and all the rest of you Lucifers Children…don’t you dare talk to me about “gun control” . Not after leaving $80 billion in weapons in Afghanistan, many of them smallarms. Don’t you dare. Mark my words some of them are coming back home. Just like the M16’s and M79’s we captured in Central America with serial numbers matching weapons left behind in Vietnam. 20-30 million invaders are in our country and they won’t leave quietly. Down on the border I get to talk with a good representation of them. They only refer to themselves as “refugees ” when the cameras are rolling. In private they call themselves Conquerors. The bolder ones tell me what they are going to do to Whites in this country especially the women . I won’t repeat it here, just look at what’s being done in some of the places they come from. The America you knew growing up is over. You better get in shape. If you cant run 2 miles over rough terrain under full combat load, if you cant pick up your buddy..both of you under full combat load and carry him 100 meters- it dosnt matter how many guns you own. Your dead meat. Plan accordingly.

    Dear Sir:
Greetings in the name of Jesus the Lord. I’m just writing to say to you I think your article is one of the most succinct pieces of writing that most certainly contains the heart and soul of our nation and why we must be armed. I am a Protestant Pentecostal Pastor who also carries my pistol everywhere I go except the shower like you because of the horrendous crazy things that happen even to seemingly good and normal people. I even carry my pistol with me when I minister in the pulpit. I do not live in fear and would hate to have to use it but I hope I would not shirk my duty to help defend my flock and family. I hate that we live in a world of evil. Yes there is a great and good God who sent His son to die for ours sins and change our hearts but as you mentioned in your article there is sin and evil and a devil in this world. Your article articulates the reasons of being free in the USA. We won’t to worship freely or not but to be free to be as our hearts dictate as long as we don’t tread on others to do it. I know I’m rambling a little but hey I am a pistol Packin preacher lol. Just sayin thanks again for the understanding of our nation and its soul. I just got to say there are I have traveled all over the world preaching the wonderful gospel of Christ and there is not freedom like here in the USA and we all know that freedom is not free. It cost many fellow citizens their lives. Blessings upon your heart and understanding of our country and until Christ comes back we must remain vigilant and stand as watchmen in the wall. That’s another biblical reason to get our walls built better against foreign intruders that hate us but that’s another subject. Again again thanks bro for telling it like it is
    In His Presence,
    Pistol Packin Pastor

Great article, I learned more in that piece of writing than my grandchild learns in school, and that is a shame. There is a bunch of us former military, combat veterans and noncombat veterans with “Black Guns” and rounds to with them. The Oath we took did and does not have an expiration date as you know. Great point on Wounded Knee as a reason for the Second. The pictures spoke volumes also. God Guns and Guts made this country free, let’s keep it that way. That is all I have to say.

  • Hub Whitt June 24, 2024, 2:50 pm

Thank you, Dr Dabbs. So very well spoken. Living in Wyoming, I grew up on the ”Rez”, and know first hand what the Indians go through. Not much has really changed. But they would be right beside us if it ever got to push come to shove!
Love your writing! Thank you, sir.

In the massacre at Wounded Knee most think it was against Indian Hostiles. In reality it was a massacre of United States CITIZENS in order to take a few outdated rifles and handguns. Under the Louisiana Purchase Treaty when the United States received the western territories the United States made every person living in that area full United States Citizens with full property rights. Using modern field artillery and Machine Guns the United States military slaughtered about 300 United States citizens within the boundaries of the United States. But ONLY after mostly disarming them. With that example should we really take seriously any attempt to abridge the 2nd Amendment of Constitution. As for Mr. Biden’s thinking the public would need F-15’s to fight for their rights he might want to remember that a bunch of uneducated really poorly armed “rag head Mujhadeen” took on the Soviet Union with all its modern weapons and fought them to a standstill. Anyone who wishes to abridge the Constitutional Rights of the People is a traitor to the Constitution they swore to enforce and should be removed from office AND have their citizenship rights removed. It is treason after all.

  • Jake June 24, 2024, 11:32 am

I always enjoy telling Proggie fools blathering about assault weapons that more people are murdered with hammers and baseball bats every year than the total from all types of rifles.

  • James June 24, 2024, 11:22 am

    Molon labe.

Suggestion, if liberal democrats are so hard up to do away with a Constitutional Amendment, why don’t We the People suggest that the 16th Amendment be eliminated? That would solve a lot of problems the world is facing. A wise man once said,”Keep your government poor and it will be your servant. Let your government get rich, it will become your master.” We the People already fought one war to be rid of an oppressive master.

  • JR June 24, 2024, 10:18 am

No one wants to mention those one million who were murdered in the hospitals during the pandemic using the CDC’s treatment protocol for covid. A treatment protocol that almost guaranteed a negative outcome. No, under no circumstances can you have our weapons.

  • ejharbet June 24, 2024, 9:56 am

    yep, come and take it.
I’m fully prepared to die fighting you.
are you ready to die trying?

  • Thomas Gaffey June 24, 2024, 9:52 am

I don’t understand how the govt. can not understand that most of us would resist losing our arms, I live in a safe rural area in No. Arizona with a good field of fire and safer neighbors. Plenty of ammo and firearms for me and my friends at the age of 70 I’m perfectly willing to defend myself and family. By the way Biden is not the only one my former Rep. Swallwell said the same thing, he stood in my driveway and lied to me when he was first running and then went on the air to tell us not to resist ‘cuz we didn’t have nukes.

How can anyone trust the government?

You forgot to list the Bay of Pigs.

  • Mike Brasuel June 24, 2024, 8:33 am

You are a trillion percent correct about it being about Wounded Knee, etc! Can’t you just see the feds gunning us down and in a split second, deciding to go ahead and shoot Mama & the kiddos? I’m not sure the feds have enough ammo though.

  • Louis June 24, 2024, 8:18 am

That’s a really good one from yours Mr Dabb. Wisely written and full of common sense. Common sense which gets scarcer and scarcer every passing year, especially on the public scene. Thank you

  • Edward Simmons June 24, 2024, 8:11 am

Nice story Dr Will keep it up

  • Pete Farris June 24, 2024, 8:08 am

From recent headlines, it appears edged weapons are making a comeback in “popularity.”
President Biden, I’m sure President Lincoln felt as you do about the “loyalty” of all the military.
And I’m sure we can find any number of veterans who can testify about the “effectiveness” of VC without F-15s.

  • Frank June 24, 2024, 8:01 am

Thank you, Will!! I am 100% on board, and your Brother in Arms when the time comes… and absent the return of Christ, it IS coming. I may no longer draw a check as a result of my oath, but in redneckesque, “It ain’t expired!” When there is no longer any sanctity in the ballot box, Patriots will default to the ammo box.

    MOLON LABE, Indeed!
