It’s easy to armchair-quarterback after reading about or watching an officer-involved shooting or other deadly use of force, but one reporter discovered first-hand just how difficult those decision can be in the heat of the moment.
WSVN’s Vanessa Medina spent some time training with the Coral Springs Police Department. The department ran the reporter through various training exercises meant to recreate common real-world scenarios like domestic violence calls, use of force, and making an arrest. Medina gave it her all, but ultimately the pseudo-suspects came out on top.
Some of the notable scenarios were a confrontation where one of the combatants gained control of her gun after she failed to fire, a traffic stop involving a gunman, and another traffic stop involving a 10-year-old wielding a shotgun.
When we have the opportunity to dissect real-life events after the fact, it’s oftentimes not difficult to realize what decisions should have been made. However, when the high-stress events unfold in real-time, it becomes infinitely more difficult.
