An Illinois homeowner got caught in a shootout on Memorial Day when he found several people attempting to steal his luxury car.

According to WGN News, the homeowner heard a noise early that morning. He rushed outside to find three people in his driveway. The homeowner told news sources later that his five daughters were asleep in the house.

Luxury Car Theft

The three suspects were attempting to steal two of his cars. A Range Rover, and a luxury car. Some news outlets claim it was a Maserati, but news footage shows it was a Ferrari.

The three suspects appear to have broken into the home first. Footage from a neighbor’s security camera shows one suspect sneaking through a gate.

The suspects entered through a door to the study. A news report from Fox 32 says the homeowner had forgotten to lock that door.

Once inside, the suspects found the keys and broke into the garage. At some point, they took two of the cars outside to the driveway.

The homeowner found them there, prepared to drive away.

“Memorial Day Fireworks”

He yelled at them to stop, according to ABC7, “threatening to shoot, and that’s when one of the suspects began firing at him from the street.”

The homeowner was already armed, and he shot back while hiding behind a tree. The shooting lasted for several minutes.

The homeowner told WGN News he had fired at least seven shots.

Neighbors posted on social media, saying the gunshots had sounded like fireworks. Over 30 bullets were found on the road by police.

Ferrari, and People, Unharmed

Several news channels showed footage of the luxury car, which appeared unharmed. The nearby fences and trees were not so lucky.

The debate centers on whether the homeowner was defending his car or his daughters (or both). Either way, he was fortunate to exercise his 2A rights when the burglars started shooting.

“White fragility” prevents Nate Rogers from sharing any discription of the “suspects.”

Too bad the homeowner wasn’t carrying a rifle with a nice optic. Those rifle rounds just hit differently.
Would have been 3 body bags.

Am I hearing what sounds like three shot bursts in the recording, isn’t that illegal?

Since this happened in Illinois, no doubt the home owner will get life, and the thieves will get the keys to the city.

Like a Paul Harvey post we are waiting for “the rest of the story”.

Sounds as if one of those fellas had a Glock switch. Thirty rounds and no one is hit? Hmm. Send that homeowner to the range!

If there is one….I went to high school in Winnetka (50 years ago) and I don’t remember there being any ranges any where near there…Well, I went and checked. The nearest one is at least 15-20 miles away south on the north side of Chicago. Shouldn’t take him long to get there in his Ferrari–if he dared to take it there!

I was born and raised in Oak Park and the few times (1980’s) my friends ever went on a drive through Sheridan Rd we were pulled over by LE about half the time. Sure, circumstances have changed but avoiding LE on foot to escape out of Winnetka is probably still quite a challenge even for just one of the offenders. Try to run, try to hide, someone will probably notice the security breach.

According to the report, neighbors believe that this might be the second car theft attempt at this address. Hard to believe that a few typical car thieves entered the home to obtain car keys, this seems more involved.

the question should be why don’t people go to the range and learn to shoot better????
if they found 30 bullets on the road where were the spent cases?

Even though his front yard on that particular road could be 100 yards long (very ritzy neighborhood), I have to suspect that those “bullets” were actually casings. I also have to wonder if the thieves decided to make a hasty retreat after he/they ran out of ammo.
