Hodgdon Powder, a leader in the reloading market, is a family-owned business in Kansas. It’s been at the forefront of producing top quality products for the reloader for the past 67 years. Innovation is part of the company philosophy, which brings us to their newest powder, CFE Pistol. CFE Pistol is an offshoot of CFE 223,  introduced last year for rifle cartridges. They are both spherical powders, which means easier metering, especially when using a progressive press. The powder contains an additive Hodgdon calls “Copper Fouling Eraser” that does just what it says, reduces copper fouling. My daily carry gun of choice when I was flying for the Army was the General Electric GAU 2B mini gun, firing 7.62 rounds at a rate of more than 4,000 shots per minute. Even with multiple barrels, you can imagine the copper fouling build-up. The CFE powders were originally developed for the military specifically to address this kind of problem. While it doesn’t relieve you of the necessity to clean your firearms, it does greatly reduce copper fouling, which makes cleaning a lot easier and maintains accuracy when shooting for extended periods such as in competition. Check out their 2014 forecast for the availability of powder for reloading in the accompanying video.

Victor could not be more right. Other people could not buy powder because Hilton Purvis bought more than he needed. The ammuntition industry including the reloading components has always been based on customers that bought as they need it. In industry we call this JIT or Just In Time and we train companies to run this way to save money (or make more money) and not have to store huge amounts of inventory.

When the industry was hit with a bunch of hoarders they can not handle it. They were already producing 100% of what we needed and we were usually just fine. Then there was the first primer scare when a rumor started that the government had decided to force primer makers to put a limit on shelf life of primers. BAM!! In a couple days you could not find a primer. Only when retailers banded together and limited the number of primers a person could buy did the problem resolve itself. Then it was the second best gun salesman when Bill Clinton was elected CRASH! Lastly the world’s greatest gun salesman , the one we call Mr. President, was re elected and BAM-CRASH!!

People started buying cases of powder and 25,000 22 Long Rifle.

This does not even take into account that someone figured out they could sell a brick off 22’s for $120.00. Those fine folks just put the nail in the coffin. Thanks to Hoarders and Gougers the typical “buy as you need” shooter does not have a chance to enjoy our sport to the point some have given up.

My take is buy what you need. Hoarders are why we have a shortage of guns and ammo. Same is true for reloading. I reload 2k-3k a year and that’s all I buy. Buy double only shorts the rest of us. Same with ammo. You don’t need 30k rounds stockpiled in you bunker. The zombies are not coming….Please!!!
I know I will get shit for this post but its true, your government is not buying it up, you are !!

I agree with you but at the same time that was great for the industry. You think that the ammo manufacturers were sad that they couldnt keep up with demand? God no they couldnt have been happier, its going to take 5 years for the market to level back out again. And while yes this sucks for average joes such as you and me this has also helped the reloading industry. A bunch of guys started reloading once they couldnt afford, or find ammo on the shelves. While 30K rounds is a ridiculous amount, everyone should keep approximately 500-1000 rnds for at least one firearm platform. I wont even go on the schpel about us being the milita, but just for times of emergency (like an ammo shortage) you might either need to defend your family, or property. Or maybe you just need to stay proficient at shooting, using good dry fire techniques and a little imagination you can make 1k rnds go pretty far just for the sake of being an effective shooter.

you are out of your own mind!!, I’m down here on eglin afb, and they are destroying millions of round every week!!! and this is only one base! the head stamps on most of this ammo, is 2000s

  • Gary January 22, 2014, 5:55 pm

The BIG problem I hear is that 21 million guns were sold last year, which means we have more guns in private hands and that means that there was and to a degree still is a shortage of ammo and re-loading supplies, but I do see ammo prices dropping as more of the good stuff comes on line

It says “CFE’s” were developed for the military NOT that Hodgdon developed the powder for the military. Could it be another company developed the CFE concept? I believe the man when he says their powder is for the consumer and its being HOARDED by us. WE ARE OUR OWN WORSE ENEMY!!!!! Buy as you need.

  • Hilton Purvis January 22, 2014, 12:15 pm

HMMMMM. I haven’t had to buy powder yet. I did buy a case of the CFE 223 last year because I could. Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Plan ahead and then you won’t be left waiting and whining.

  • Ron January 22, 2014, 11:56 am

You must have missed the part where they said this was developed for the military. Who buy’s the most volume as far as powder used? The military. Guess where all our powder is going. BTW, your still buying it (taxes) , just not able to use it. 🙂

  • Irv Naselow January 22, 2014, 10:49 am

Is the loading data available for this powder?

  • Jeff Edwards January 22, 2014, 9:46 am

My question is can they supply enough to keep the shelves full at the stores? You cannot find powder anywhere.

  • Mike Durhan January 22, 2014, 6:03 am

That’s wonderful Hodgdon has time to develop and market new powders. Meanwhile, I haven’t been able to get their Clays, Universal Clays and International Clays shotgun powders for months and months. I am out….. and at a critical time when all powders are scarce.

Priorities? – not to mention the impression this makes on clay target shooters……!!!

    • al illig January 22, 2014, 9:11 am

AMEN Mike! And that goes for Power Pistol as well!

    • Moe January 22, 2014, 10:09 am

Riiiight, because their R&D department has anything to do with production. Buy more than you need when you see it and then you won’t have to whine about not having the reloading supplies you need.
