The video above will most likely elicit one of two reactions. Either (a) it will confirm in one’s mind that when it comes to the Constitution, that critically important document that limits the powers of government and codifies the rights of the people, Hillary Clinton doesn’t know her butt from a hole in the ground. Or (b) one will defend Hillary, and argue that it was an honest mistake.
So, here’s what happened. While appearing on the Steve Harvey Show, or whatever it’s called, Hillary Clinton started to pitch her anti-gun agenda to the audience, suggesting that it’s time for people to take on the National Rifle Association and remind it what the Constitution says.
“We’ve got to say to the gun lobby, you know what, there is a constitutional right for people to own guns, but there’s also a constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that enables us to have a safe country where we are able to protect our children and others from this senseless gun violence,” she said.
Clinton is, of course, confusing the Declaration of Independence with the Constitution. The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Putting the conflation aside, Clinton is wrong that these two ideas are in conflict with one another. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the Second Amendment is what safeguards one’s unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Remember, government is the biggest existential threat to one’s liberties — not some gang banger with a gun. Yes, we all want to keep guns out of the hands of prohibited persons, but not at the expense of one’s right to keep and bear arms. If we disarm America — or subarm America — as Hillary wants in a futile effort to keep bad guys from obtaining guns, we will inevitably lose those unalienable rights stated in the Declaration of Independence to government tyranny. And we will also lose all the rights codified in the Constitution: free speech, religion, due process, etc., to government tyranny. Not to mention the fact that without the 2A we will be defenseless against the very gang-banger we tried to disarm via Hillary’s gun-control agenda in the first place. Gun control is a lose, lose proposition.
Our founders and framers knew how critically important an armed America was to preserving freedom. It’s why they included the Second Amendment. Hillary should know this. She’s running for president! But then again, maybe she doesn’t really care about what the Constitution says.

Our Constitution was written to put into action as a form of government for free men and women that was BASED on gthe principles outlined in the Declaration. In the legal system ” all men are innocent until proven guilty” most of the time…. . However in the case of disarming America it seems that we’re all bad until proven good, so to speak. Ms Clinton missed a bit in American History. The Declaration of Independence was a declaration of war on the King and Parliament. A couple lines later it talks about the right of the people to change an oppressive government, if necessary by force of arms as Cromwell had done in the Civil War. Both the Declaration and the Bill of Rights proclaim the rights of the individual. If you read the document carefully, The Bill of Rights is a proclamation of restrictions on the powers of the Central government.

Those are not Constitutional Rights, they are Inherent Rights! The Constitution does not “give” us any rights. Those rights are pre-existing, inherent to mankind! The Constitution restricts the Federal Government from infringing on those rights. This is the most important point that most people don’t realize. If you believe. as obviously Hillary Clinton does, that the Federal government “gives” you these rights through the Constitution, then by default, the government can also take away what rights were ‘given.” Only we, as free citizens can “give up” our rights by allowing the restrictions placed on our Federal government through the Constitution to be changed or removed.

Liberty Bell: Our “inherent” rights are definitely the rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” AND the right of self-defense BUT it is the Constitution that GRANTS us the right to use firearms to best exercise the inherent self-defense right. Without our second Amendment we could use fists, feet, rocks, clubs, knives, etc. (like England, Australia, Japan, and others) to exercise that right but not with firearms. Our Framers were very wise to GRANT that right because firearms are the BEST way. This is why we need to fight and continue to fight those politicians who want to remove that right.

The only constitutional gun control laws in this country are the ones that are about things that are already illegal such as assault, robbery etc. There’s no exceptions listed saying the states can override this right, not can the cities etc. Any infringement is unconstitutional and undermines our freedom and liberty.

@Chris Baker – And let me add a few others to Chris’s list. Rape, kidnapping, B&E, all forms of stealing from another person or business, almost any misdemeanor or lower level felony less than outright murder all are already illegal. And the punishment for these already illegal crimes against your fellow man/woman upon conviction, usually a term in your life spent in an institution of incarceration which, in many cases, involve a much better life than the convict ever had on the “outside”!! Free medical, free prescription drugs to treat their illnesses including any operatory procedures that are required, free room and board including some better food than I eat on occasion, free education including access to all training aids and counselling needed to gain a degree, even a law degree if desired, and I could go on with the list but you get the idea.
Question: If all these benefits are available to already convicted criminals, who made this type of “punishment” available to already convicted criminals?? I won’t mention any names but the term ends with the letter “Politicians” and begins with the letter “ALL”!! And how did this group of madmen and women get into such a seat of power over the years of our great country’s history?? …………. WE, the people, who have an unalienable right to get off our dead asses and get out to cast our VOTE every couple of years, put them there!! It’s easy to cast aspersions on such filth that are in control of this country but one has to check both sides of the stone before casting it toward anyone else’s glass house. How many of us have sat at home and used the utterly useless, ignorant, lazy excuse that “my vote doesn’t mean that much” or “I’m sure there will be enough other people voting to get the job done”?? I remember the first time I got to vote in a real election, I was young and impetuous, wild in the streets sometimes, a typical teenager of my time, but I could not wait to cast my first vote in a real election!! ….. My VOTE!! ….. If memory serves, it was for some state representatives or some such state election and I was so thrilled that I finally had my “say” in the way our country was being handled! And I only have missed one (1) election in the following 50 some odd years of being an American voter. And that was my fault. But my pick still got into office in spite of my oversight. Now that may prove out the theory that “my vote doesn’t mean that much” but, that year I missed out on voting, I felt just one step short of being some kind of traitor to my nation, my party, and myself …….. at the time.
Since then, I have seen politicians lie, cheat, steal, break laws, the conviction of which would have put me so far away that they would have to pipe sunshine into my cell for me to tell if it was day or night, and, with few exceptions, they got away with blatant disregard for the laws of this great land. These people were put in their controlling positions by YOU and ME, the voters who bought into their “talk the talk” and, only after they had a firm foot in the door of the Oval Office, did we see that things weren’t as they should be and these people could not or would not “walk their walk”! We are seeing that happen today in factual detail.
So, where do we go from here? There is only one strategy to use when you are backed against the wall and those hounds are arguing over which one gets the “first bite” of their “victims”. FIGHT BACK!! You don’t have much to lose other than your life and that can be taken at any moment by the actions of a drunk behind the wheel of a vehicle or an enemy IED hidden somewhere in a God forsaken land you never heard of before. You don’t have to rally or carry protest signs, such actions simply frustrate those who don’t know the real secret of their power. No, the powerful people of this nation know that there is one way to get the power back when someone tries to take that power from them, they get out and VOTE!! They know they can affect change with their one vote! If you feel, in your heart, that there is someone out there who can rationally lead this country and really make a difference in the way we live and prosper as a nation, cast your vote when it means the most for this country! Trite as it may sound, we have moved mountains in our country’s history with our vote and we can do it again. But it’s like bitching about never winning the lottery, or a horse race, or a game of poker, you can’t win if you don’t play! I realize that the “pickin’s” are slim this go around but it will only get worse if you and I don’t do our small parts to affect change. We need to get this nation back on track and it won’t happen based on one election. It won’t happen if it continues on the path it is now following. But there is a chance, maybe even some light at the end of a long tunnel signifying that change is on the horizon, if we persist and we keep our focus and we VOTE and VOTE again until such time as we begin to see that light become brighter and creep closer to our position. How do I know this??
Because I have a never ending faith in the foundation that our forefathers laid out so long ago being a rock solid basis with which to operate a free country in perpetuity and I also believe that the power of the vote is the greatest power each of us have at our disposal. I know that this country is at a crossroad and this coming election will determine which path we take from here on.

Sorry, you are confused if you think prison or even county/city jail is a cakewalk. People come out changed, many for the worst. Yes, they have to be fed, clothed, and have medical care. The overcrowding and the “respect” that every one feels is his/hers makes it a living hell. If you don’t want to team up with the gang the picks you, you are a pariah and then anyone can try you. The REAL problem is indeed the “senseless violence.” Guns are just the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot of violence happening that never includes any gun, in fact, that describes most of it. Heck, even if they COULD deprive everybody (except themselves of course) of firearms, it wouldn’t slow down the violence one little bit. Heck, if anything, it would probably escalate when people like me, 60 and arthritic, became totally defenseless.
Jim- you are correct. The first recorded act of violence did not happen with a firearm, if you go back to Genesis and read about Able’s demise. This country’s tepid response to violence and the justice system’s ‘slap on the wrist’ policies have enabled and emboldened the criminal’s behavior. We don’t put convicted felons away for long enough periods of time; we plea bargain serious, aggravated offenses down to misdemeanors. We can’t be serious about stopping the drugs flowing into this country until we seal up the southern border. But it is so easy for Cankles to blame an inanimate object. Ms. Cankles, if you want to keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them, then start locking up serious offenders for a very long time and keep them off of the streets.
