Heckler & Koch is now shipping the SP5L very long-barreled pistol. Based on the hugely iconic MP5, the SP5L, for Sporting Pistol, Long, was built to serve select commercial markets, and raise more than a few eyebrows.
Due to its extended, 16.5-inch long barrel, the SP5L can be sold in places where there are restrictions on large-format pistols while still being easy to import. These pistols are manufactured at Heckler & Koch’s Oberndorf factory in southwest Germany.
“The backbone of the SP5L is the roller-delayed blowback operating system, which is legendary for its accuracy, reliability, and smooth shooting dynamic,” said Heckler & Koch. “Originally perfected on the Heckler & Koch G3 rifle, it has been used on several other HK firearms still serving today around the world.”
“It retains many of the critical elements of the MP5, including its precision-machined components and attention to detail. This high level of quality and workmanship is a result of making the SP5L in the same factory, on the same lines, and by the same workforce that has been making MP5s for years.”
Other features include a 3-lug suppressor mount and a 1/2-28 threaded muzzle, 10-, 15- or 30-round magazine capacity, standard H&K turret sights and an ambidextrous safety selector. The SP5L weighs 5.9 pounds unloaded and measures in at a little over 25 inches long in its factory configuration.
This will clearly appeal to MP5 purists who want the real deal, not a clone or even a licensed copy. Each SP5L comes with two magazines, a bungie-style single point sling to attach to the rear of the receiver, a full-size range bag, a sight adjustment tool and a manual.

Obviously it can be converted to a rifle pattern pretty easily, although people interested in making the conversion should be familiar with the ins and outs of the law when it comes to building rifles with foreign-made components. Even with a retail price of around $2,999, these will move fast, so anyone interested in getting one should jump on any in stock when they can.
Whether it’s for collecting, fun at the range, self-defense or even small game hunting, the SP5L will make a lot of people happy. For more information about the SP5L and the rest of Heckler & Koch’s growing linup of MP5-based firearms, visit them online.
If they are going to make the barrel that long I would just prefer they add the carbine stock and offer it as a rifle.
