Smith & Wesson has expanded their Spec Series lineup with the introduction of the M&P9 Metal HD – Spec Series V, unveiled at SHOT Show 2025.
While it’s an intriguing addition to the M&P family, it comes with some notable changes and design elements that may appeal to certain shooters.

Steel Frame and Added Weight
The M&P9 Metal HD departs from the polymer construction typical of the M&P lineup by incorporating a steel frame.
Weighing 2.31 pounds without a magazine, this added heft is intended to reduce felt recoil and provide greater stability during firing.
While this feature may suit competitive shooters, the increased weight might not appeal to those prioritizing lightweight carry options.
Performance Features
The pistol includes a 4.8-inch threaded barrel, a Strike Industries compensator, and suppressor-height night sights.

The compensator and threaded barrel aim to mitigate muzzle rise and enhance control, but whether these features justify the additional cost is subjective.
Aesthetic Touches and Customization
A blue PVD finish on the controls, magwell, and mag release adds visual flair to the pistol. While some may appreciate the bold design, it may not be everyone’s preference. (I personally think it pops. What say you?)
The inclusion of interchangeable backstraps allows for some ergonomic customization, maintaining a familiar feature from the M&P series.
Additional Features and Packaging

The M&P9 Metal HD comes equipped with an optics-ready slide, tall night sights, and three 23-round magazines.
The package also includes a Limited-Edition Spec Series Coin and Knife, along with a hard carry case.
Final Thoughts
Smith & Wesson’s M&P9 Metal HD – Spec Series V introduces a steel-framed option for fans of the M&P series, targeting users who prioritize stability and reduced recoil over portability.
While its features align with competitive and tactical use, its added weight and price point may not make it a universal fit. Remember, MSRP is $1,699. That’s not cheap.

Not a chance in hell with that price tag attached to it.
I like it. It would be a good range toy but I have no illusions of carrying this thing. Still I have plenty of guns like that so all I would have to do is choke down the list price… and it would have step in front of that Python I have always wanted.
Do they have plans for an all steer 45 ACP?
