Last week marked a turn in Virginia’s legislative landscape as anti-gun Democrats introduced two draconian bills, HB 2 and SB 2, aimed at imposing strict regulations on firearms.
These bills, if passed, would enforce a ban on what they define as “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines, significantly impacting the ownership and use of semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns in the Old Dominion.
The proposed legislation, HB 2 and SB 2, seeks to comprehensively restrict the “import, sale, manufacture, purchase, possession, transport, or transfer” of a broad range of semi-automatic firearms.
Moreover, these bills include a clause to prohibit magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds, and they propose expanded criteria to qualify for concealed carry permits.
This legislative move is not unprecedented in Virginia’s political history. Gun owners vividly recall a similar “assault weapon” ban proposal from a few years ago, which was successfully defeated after a robust and concerted effort by firearm enthusiasts and advocates.
Gun Owners of America (GOA) anticipates that thwarting the current bills will require an equally formidable effort.

Despite the determination of the GOA to contest these bills at every stage, there is a looming possibility that they may advance to the governor’s desk, given the current anti-gun majority in the Democrat-controlled General Assembly.
In such a scenario, the decision to enact or veto the legislation would rest with Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
In response to this legislative challenge, Jordan Stein, the Southeast Region Director for the Gun Owners of America, is urging the community to actively engage in the political process.
Stein emphasizes the importance of contacting Governor Glenn Youngkin at (804) 786-2211 to advocate for the veto of HB2/SB 2, as well as any other gun control measures that may arise.
Additionally, Stein is calling on supporters to participate in the Virginia Citizens Defense League’s (VCDL) Lobby Day scheduled for January 15th in Richmond. This event presents a crucial opportunity for individuals to directly interact with their legislative representatives and express their views.
As the debate over these gun control bills intensifies, GOA remains committed to defending the rights of firearm owners and ensuring that their voices are heard in the halls of the Virginia General Assembly.
As always, stay tuned for updates.
