Looking for a way to get more bang for your buck? I have it figured out. Don’t ask what possessed me to tear down my perfectly good GLOCK 42 mags and start hacking on the springs. But I’m glad I did.
The process is simple enough. Spring tension presents rounds and feeds the gun. Spring tension also stacks up, preventing the addition of extra rounds of ammo. Take off too much spring, and you may not feed reliably. So go slow.
The balance I discovered can be seen in the photos below. Knock off close to 3 coils and you get an extra round. As of air time, I’ve put more than 100 rounds through on this new configuration. And I haven’t had a single failure.
And just to be clear on all of this, we’re not suggesting you begin modifying your GLOCK. Modifications jeopardize the pistol’s performance and void warranties. But it is nice to know that it is possible. And eighth round may not be important. Than again, it might be.

Here’s the deal ….
It’s not about the spring …. it’s about the follower on top of the spring. the back of the follower is long … trim some of it off and I’ll bet you’ll be able to fit that extra round in a stock mag. I have a Ruger 22/45 and I shortened the pin on the mag base plate, now it holds 11 rounds instead of 10.
THIS IS A STUPID THING TO DO!
DONT DO THIS!
THIS CAN MAKE YOU UNSAFE AND UNUSABLE!
WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST!
When you cut your spring you lose strength and tension to gain one bullet!
At the same time you are losing the spring strength and tension.
THIS IS A VERY BAD THING TO GAIN ONE BULLET!
WHEN THE SPRING GETS OLD IT LOSES ITS STRENGTH AND TENSION.
AS THE SPRING AGES, IT TAKES A SET GETS SHORTER,
NOW THAT YOU HAVE CUT THE NEW SPRING OFF, AND MADE
IT WEAKER,
YOU HAVE SET YOURSELF FOR A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE,
AS THE WEAKENED STATE OF THE SPRING, UNABLE TO PUSH
THE ROUNDS IN THE CHAMBER, ANYMORE, 1 OR EVEN 8 OF THEM !
I DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT, I WANT MY GUN TO WORK NO MATER WHAT!
BUY A EXTENDER FOR THE MAG AND LIVE A LOT LONGER
Thank you
“BUY A EXTENDER FOR THE MAG AND LIVE A LOT LONGER”
You know a magazine extender reduces the spring tension proportionally to how many rounds are gained compared to clipping the spring, right?
Failure to feed isn’t a catastrophic failure lol
i think ill keep my spring and use a extended mag for a spare. that makes my 42 six for sure no matter how long the mag was loaded
