A 10-year-old girl visiting Coney Island Monday found a loaded firearm on the beach, police said.

The girl, who was accompanied by her 33-year-old mother, located the 9mm pistol near the water’s edge around 2 p.m.

The mother then picked up the firearm and brought it to a nearby lifeguard who then called NYPD.

“We noticed the helicopters cruising around the boat, the NYPD boats going back and forth. We were wondering why,” beachgoer Mo Zada of Astoria told NBC New York.

Police found one round in the firearm and subsequently cut it into pieces rendering it permanently inoperable.

Why wouldn’t the officers try to locate the owner of the firearm? It could’ve been stolen and could’ve been recovered but, instead, they destroyed someones property.
