FN America is expanding on its popular line of service pistols with the new 509 Compact MRD. The optics-ready subcompact is a polymer double-stack striker-fired pistol in line with the rest of the 509 series, just smaller for everyday and concealed carry.
Chambered for 9mm Luger, the newest little FN pistol has a 12+1-round capacity with the option of using 15-round magazines from the 509 Midsize, and of course 10-round magazines for restricted markets.
As mentioned the 509 Compact MRD is optics-ready, with a slide cut for mini red dot sights. This should differentiate the 509 Compact MRD from the FNS Compact, the pistol that the 509 series is based on.
In addition to the slide cut the 509 Compact MRD has factory-installed suppressor sights to cowitness with red-dot sights. Each pistol comes with one 12-round magazine and one 15-round magazine with a grip sleeve, or two 10-round magazines. The 10- and 12-round magazines have extended floorplates for a longer grip that won’t protrude when carrying concealed.
The 509 Compact MRD is compatible with 17- and 24-round factory 509 magazines as well. The Compact will be offered in all black and two-tone flat dark earth with black highlights.
Like other 509 and FNS pistols, the new Compact is fully ambidextrous, with magazine release buttons and slide release levers on both sides. The pistol uses low-profile controls to minimize snagging on the draw. The 509 Compact does not have manual safeties, instead the pistol has a passive hinged trigger safety.
Also, like the midsize and full-size 509s the Compact features interchangeable backstraps to fit smaller and larger hand sizes. The grip sleeve for the 15-round magazines is swept to fit both backstrap profiles.

Other features include tall forward and rear slide serrations, a full-length accessory rail and a barrel with a recessed crown. Unloaded the 509 Compact weighs 25.5 ounces and measures in at just 6.8 inches long with a 3.7-inch barrel.
It’s clear that with the 509 series that FN is working hard to take a bite out of the always increasingly popular EDC market as well as the service pistol market in general.
The addition of the slide cut for optics along with the other subtle improvements such as the improved grip may even tempt existing FNS Compact owners to pick up the new 509 Compact MRD.
The 509 Compact carries a $799 suggested price which is in-line with other premium, optics-ready service pistols. As always, expect to find prices lower online and in stores.
