The FN 309 MRD is a budget-focused, optics-ready 9mm pistol designed to be easy to shoot, easy to own, and easier on the wallet.
FN developed it using direct customer feedback, especially from newer and value-driven shooters. The result is a simplified carry pistol that trims cost without stripping out features that matter.

FN officially showed the 309 MRD at SHOT Show 2026, positioning it below the FN 509 line while keeping familiar ergonomics, felt recoil, and reliability. MSRP lands at $549, with availability starting now and a wider retail presence expected by the end of the quarter.
Design Goals: Accessible and Approachable
FN built the 309 MRD around approachability. The grip texture feels noticeably less aggressive than the FN 509, but it still provides solid control. FN aimed this change at shooters who want comfort during longer range sessions, without snagging on their shirt while concealed.
The pistol uses an internal hammer-fired, single-action-only system with a trigger pull of around five pounds. FN retained multiple internal safeties, even though the trigger blade is shrouded and less visible. A manual safety version is also planned for somewhere down the road.

Optics-Ready Without the Plate Stack
The FN 309 MRD skips a modular plate system entirely. Instead, it direct-mounts optics using Shield RMS and Leupold DeltaPoint Pro footprints. That choice keeps costs down for the end user and simplifies setup for new shooters.
Polymer sights come standard, with a green fiber-optic front and U-notch rear. FN kept the same dovetail as the FN 509, opening the door to existing aftermarket and OEM metal sight upgrades.

Magazines and Capacity
The 309 MRD uses proprietary polymer magazines, which may raise eyebrows. FN counters that concern with price. FN estimates MSRP around $20 for 16-round magazines and $30 for 20-round extended mags, likely less at retail.
Both magazines ship with the pistol. FN also plans 10-round options for restricted states. The magazines load easily, thanks to reduced spring force, and still deliver 16 rounds in a compact-sized grip.

Shooting Impressions and Reliability Notes
On the range, the pistol feels soft shooting and controllable. Recoil stays mild, though the center of gravity is high. Grip texture feels balanced rather than abrasive. Controls are well placed and easy to manipulate.
At a prior FN media event, multiple writers, along with myself, ran roughly 1,200 rounds through a single pistol in rapid succession. The slide became hot enough to boil water, yet the gun never malfunctioned. While we have yet to do a full review on a production model, the early signs look promising.

The FN 309 MRD doesn’t chase premium trends. It focuses on usability, affordability, and durability. Exactly what FN set out to build. Learn more HERE.
