A 35-year-old Florida man is dead following an encounter with police where he was shot with a taser, local media reports.
Timothy Shad Griffis was prowling around the backyard of 91-year-old Jamie Glen of Lake City, Florida, at around 6:30 p.m. when the elderly homeowner called police.
Upon arriving to the scene, police found Griffis in a shed.
Deputy Bradley Carpenter ordered Griffis to come out of the shed, but he refused. Griffis then began to threaten Deputy Carpenter, which led to the deployment of the taser.
“After he failed to comply with the requests to come out he was eventually tased and taken into custody,” Lt. Katina Dicks told Action News, the local CBS affiliate.
Once Griffis had been tased, Deputy Carpenter put the handcuffs on the suspect. However, Griffis had trouble breathing. Carpenter then took off the cuffs and began administering CPR.
Griffis was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Carpenter is now on paid administrative leave.
Lt. Dicks explained that the use of force was justified, saying, “In a situation like that it is appropriate to use a Taser.”
