Double Take: Another Brief But Longing Look at the Kimber Revolver — NRA 2016

in Authors, Industry News, S.H. Blannelberry, This Week
Kimber K6s Revolver.

The Kimber K6s Revolver.  It will be mine one day, oh yes.  It will be mine.

You know how the say, “When you know, you know?”  Well, it’s true. But it’s not just true in the context of finding your soulmate, it’s also true when it comes to your next firearm purchase.  When you know, you know.

For me, the Kimber K6s Revolver will probably be my next gun purchase. I’m inclined to say “probably” because I have limited funds and a budget-minded girlfriend who can be quite scrupulous when it comes to non-essential purchases.  But yeah, assuming I can sneak one by her or that I can find a way to justify it “for work” (which works some of the time but not all of the time), I will be happily buying a K6s.

The K6s just speaks to me.  And in handling it once again at NRA 2016 I confirmed what I had suspected, that my brief encounter with it at SHOT Show 2016 wasn’t just a fling, but the beginning of an enduring relationship.  There is real chemistry between us.

The Kimber K6s. Give it a try. You may like it.

Give it a try. You may like it.

I love the sleek aesthetic, typified by the fluteless cylinder (well, almost fluteless) and internal hammer; and the ergonomics that come from the polymer formed grips, textured release button, serrated back strap and rounded and blended edges.  And oh, I can’t forget about the buttery smooth no-slack, double action trigger.  Yeah, it’s the real deal.  It is one of the smoothest on the market.  Couple all that with trench-cut removable front and rear dovetail sights and you have quite a package on your hands.  It fills all needs: EDC, home defense, backup.

Six-round cylinder, reputed to be the smallest ever offered.

The six-round cylinder is reputed to be the smallest ever offered.

For me, the K6s is the embodiment of a new-age or modern wheel gun.  In many ways, it’s what the evolution of the platform should be (that isn’t a dig at Chiappa).  Yet, I can already hear the skeptics and the naysayers.  “It’s too heavy! 23 ounces (empty) is too much heft to carry on your hip, day in and day out,” they’ll exclaim.

All I can say is that if a beautiful stainless steel .357 revolver with a legendary trigger is not for you, then it’s not for you. But don’t fully rule it out until you try it.

Started out using a 1911 over 50 years ago. Military service started out with a 4 year enlistment and ended 23 years later. During that time transitioned from a 1911 to a S&W Mod 10 to an Airweight during aircrew duties and then back to a Model 10. After leaving the AF I transitioned back to a 1911 and CCd a newer version in the Colt Officers model. Now since I hit 70 and have arthritis problems, CC is with a S&W 36. Size and weight does matter.

  • Archangel May 25, 2016, 1:31 am

My EDC 1911 is just over 39oz, and thats empty.
    Just under 50oz fully loaded!

  • Joe May 23, 2016, 11:37 pm

From the photo, it appears that it won’t take a speed loader. Seems like a pretty fundamental oversight.

    • Sgt. D October 25, 2016, 1:58 pm

But yet, there on the Kimber product page is a speedloader for the K6s.

  • TC May 23, 2016, 7:39 pm

Wow, 23 ounces is heavy? Hmmm, my winter carry a S&W 629 2-5/8″ weighs 39 ounces empty, my summer carry a S&W Model 60 (old style) weighs 26 ounces. Are the men in this country a bunch of weaklings or just not smart enough to purchase a 1-3/4″ wide, 1/4″ thick belt? Oh, did I mention I am also 67 years old? Good grief what have we become?

  • Paul Strickland May 23, 2016, 5:45 pm

Meh……I’ll take my S&W M-13, .357 mag., 3in HB, K frame, Pachmayr grips. Solid gun, smooth as glass action, slight holster wear, 99% gun …….$250.00 at a local pawn shop. I figure with the money I saved over the Kimber I can buy a few cases of .38 / .357 ammo.

  • D. Livingston May 23, 2016, 3:34 pm

I do carry a revolver frequently, and much prefer their simplicity and reliability. I also prefer a 6-shot over the common-place 5-shot revolvers. Presuming S&W doesn’t re-offer its superb K-frame 6-shot revolvers in a 2″ barrel snubnose, I’ll look at the Kimber.

  • Grant Stevens May 23, 2016, 11:52 am

Glad to see Kimber put a high-quality American-made revolver on the market. Though not a fan of a revolver I cannot shoot single-action, perhaps Kimber will offer one with an exposed hammer in the near future. A 4-inch with exposed hammer would also be very nice, especially if its single-action trigger is as whisper-quick as an old P&R S&W, and its double-action as buttery smooth as the Colt Python. If the K6s is of the same quality as their semi-auto offerings, it will find a home in many concealed-carry holsters. Kudos to Kimber for picking-up where Colt left off.

    • Lon May 23, 2016, 3:29 pm

Took the words right out of my… errr…. keyboard, Grant. Give me one in 4″ with a hammer. And… one in 3″, with a hammer, in .44 Mag ;).

  • Steve D May 23, 2016, 11:18 am

    That handle looks kinda small…

  • steve May 23, 2016, 10:54 am

PRICE = boutique weapon ( look at my expensive shiny penis ) pistol…… Get a Ruger SP or GP and spend the rest on ammo and other gear

    • Lon May 23, 2016, 3:45 pm

I bought my first GP100 not too long ago for <$300. Now, MSRP is slightly less than the Kimber ($799) for the plain jane GP and more for their Talo versions making them a nearly equally "Shiny Penis". Albeit a more old looking one (grandpa's shiny penis?). I still find it hard to caugh up that kind of $$ for a revolver, but it's nice to see another player. For now, my main shiny penis will remain my Alaskan in .454 until Kimber makes a .44 or….. (gasp) one in .454. Then I'll have the biggest shiny penis at the range! Rationalizing a revolver purchase is like rationalizing a motorcycle purchase. Nobody really needs one, but, those who buy them honestly feel as if they do.

      • Lon May 23, 2016, 3:53 pm

        Since I can’t edit my post…
I, personally, prefer the “old school” look of the Rugers, but I still find the Kimber intriguing.

        • Wally May 23, 2016, 11:53 pm

I still periodically carry my original Colt Cobra that was my first off duty gun I bought way, way back in 1960. Still shoots well and is solid. Only change is to pachmyer combat grips. Use .38 specials for practice, but stoke it with 38 plus P’s for carry. Never had to use it yet and pray I never do. But it is a very reliable, solid gun and I can depend on it if and when it is ever needed.

    • Martin B May 24, 2016, 8:09 pm

If your own “shiny penis” resembles the Kimber in any way, you need to see a doctor.

    • MagnumOpUS May 26, 2016, 12:15 am

For me, a truly “shiny penis” would be a Korth Kombat.
But for now, I am more than happy with my shiny blued original three-screw Blackhawk. đŸ™‚

  • Paul Reynolds May 23, 2016, 10:16 am

I would love to have the new revolver by Kimber , BUT, I already purchased their very expensive, a bit unreliable, Kimber solo and a half dozen holsters for same . Still carry my .38 revolver I can depend on . If I could sell the Solo then I’d go for the lighter weight .38 . Anyone want to buy a Solo ??????

  • Alan May 23, 2016, 9:16 am

Very nice! BUT, why a 6 shot???? I just don’t see the point of a 6 shot snub.
Sorry, but if you need that extra shot over a 5 shot’s thinner profile for concealment, I’m not on board with that idea.
A snub is strictly a defensive arm, IMO. And you will carry (hopefully) and never have to use it.
So carry profile is first and foremost over 1 extra shot.

    • Lon May 23, 2016, 4:02 pm

      Ruger SP101 cylinder= 1.349″.
      S&W model 60 cylinder= 1.309.
      Kimber cylinder= 1.39″.

  • Jim May 23, 2016, 9:12 am

Perhaps it might be prudent for you, S. H., to look for a new girlfriend……while you still can!

    • Lon May 23, 2016, 3:48 pm

Exactly. No ring, no kids (I assume). She has no leverage. A bit PW are we? đŸ˜‰

  • W.P. Zeller May 23, 2016, 8:51 am

Whoa! Who knew 23 ounces (unloaded- do you carry unloaded?) was too much?
Guess I’ll have to get rid of my 32 ounce (loaded- I carry loaded) Commander that I’ve been carrying every day for years. Dang.
Still, I’d be interested in having a good look at the K6s, since to me it represents an update to the venerable Detective Special series, with worthwhile improvements such as an improved grip shape.
At a couple ounces more than a DS, it could be good. At least, til the price tag is looked at.
