Fascinating youtube documentary on Swiss gun culture (see above). I had no idea that the Swiss also referenced “well regulated militias” way before the American Revolution. But it overthinks its central question on how Swiss gun culture differs from American gun culture, and whether those differences determine the massively different levels of violence in each country.
Simply put, the Swiss aren’t more peaceful than us because of a “better” gun culture focused on duty instead of liberty, like he argues. The Swiss are more peaceful because of a stronger civil society, more ties between people, and strict enforcement of social norms. In other words, a better culture generally, not a better “gun culture” specifically. Americans increasingly have nothing in common with each other, and that erodes society in dramatic ways, including crime.

The video concludes with the usual gun control propaganda. It points fingers at “crazy gun rights people” (scary montage included), when most gun-related crime is not done by such people. It also does the whole “individual right is a modern invention” lie, ignoring the lengthy history of commentary confirming the individual right (see my pinned thread). And for all the complaints about the individual right, the Swiss effectively have that too, even if not codified. The country’s gun laws are less onerous than some US jurisductions.
I’d also take issue with some other assertions, like his claim that the Second Amendment exists to protect the government from invasion or insurrection. That CAN be true, but lots of writings show the founders were also concerned with the government itself becoming tyrannical, and the 2A exists to deal with that too. Overall, an interesting video for the portions that focus on Switzerland. And perhaps there are some ideas we should borrow from Switzerland in terms of bringing back a sense of national duty.

Wow! Bob W needs to stop watching MSNBC and watch some real news, so that he can better understand what has caused the demise of our once magnificent country.
To say Americans have nothing in common with each other is bullshit. I met a guy in Bermuda this past summer. I’m from NY he was from Texas. We both like country music, but married, both have two kids, both firefighters, both have lots of guns, both love sports cars, both SCUBA dive, both white, both Catholic, the list goes on. We hung out for four days. The minute I told him I am a democrat who hates the draft dodger trump for all the harm he has done to the country this guy wanted to kill me. The Republican Party has turned into a dangerous cult hell bent on destroying anyone who gets in their way. So don’t tell me we have nothing in common.
“The Second Amendment exists to protect the government from invasion or insurrection.” So the Amendments in the Bill of Rights list the rights of the individual against the power of the state – except for the Second Amendment. Got it. Using that logic, the First Amendment safeguards the right of the government to free speech, and the Fourth Amendment protects the government from unlawful search and seizure. Not a lot of critical thinking going on there.
In many comments over the years, I have used the Swiss as an example of a pure culture leading to little or no crime. Amazingly, 99.3% of the Swiss population were BORN IN SWITZERLAND! Swiss traditions, customs, and beliefs are passed from generation to generation. There are no Mexican-Swiss, Polish-Swiss, African-Swiss, Asian-Swiss, etc.
When customs, traditions, and laws are taught from birth, with total societal support, there is almost guaranteed adherence to those norms.
A constant influx of foreigners who have long-established beliefs which differ from the base will, without fail, challenge and change a society. In our own example, the “American society” no longer exists. In it’s place, we have constant strife and conflict, which only further destroys society.
So I guess what you’re saying is that if this country only had native Americans living here we would all get along. Seriously. We all came from somewhere else and we all brought our bullshit with us. That don’t mean we can’t get along. Plus, I spent a month in Switzerland. The food sucks unless you like eating Fondue every day. A little diversity goes a long way.
Amazingly, you don’t realize that “came from somewhere else”, is a relatively new concept in North America. Why do you think Europe and Asia are sometimes referred to as the “Old World”? Do you not realize that the movement of people from one place to another, at some point in history, only occurred over thousands, sometimes many thousands, of years in the Old World?
In the U.S., the displacement of native Americans began sometime in the late 1500’s, which is barely a blink of an eye compared to migration into Switzerland, or Norway, or Sweden, or Russia, or………
As for your suggestion that my reasoning would dictate a non-volatile Native American society (which was certainly not non-volatile ), perhaps you should up your education. There are 574 distinct Native American tribes in the United States, yet the oldest “humanoid” fossil found in North America is between 12,000 and 13,000 years old. By comparison, the oldest “humanoid” fossil found in the “Old Country” is estimated to be 3 MIILLION YEARS OLD! That would be about 250 times the age of the oldest North American. As a result, many locations in Europe and Asia have had relatively “pure” societies for tens of thousands of years. Perhaps you can grasp that 574 distinct societies inhabiting North America in the short span of 12,000 years could be just a bit more volatile than one society inhabiting an area for tens of thousands of years. Possibly????
If you still cannot grasp the effects of having a 99.3% PURE SOCIETY over thousands of years, compared to that of North America, then there is no way you will ever understand the vast consequences created by mixing distinctly different societies over a short span of several hundred years, AKA, the United States of America.
I’m pretty sure inciting violence by claiming people of a certain political party eat babies and traffic children don’t help.
You’re an idiot, go back to calguns with the rest of the clowns.
Come on be nice.
Yes, that would be a good example, but it is quite a stretch from the discussion about the the relatively pure culture of the Swiss, and how that compares to the “mixed breed” culture of the U.S.
This was an interesting video for the most part but the biases of the narrator came out. We do use firearms for self defense. They are used between 50,000 to 2 million times a year for self defense, even if they were never fired. Governments, state and federal, have gone soft on criminals. The phrase “common sense gun laws” is BS. The criminals don’t follow the laws! If someone is illegally possessing a firearm and using during a crime or murder, do you think they care about limited magazine capacity laws? The NRA and other pro 2A groups want to educate children about firearms and firearm safety but the anti-gun groups and government block it at every turn! I am willing to bet that Switzerland doesn’t have nearly the gang and drug problems the U.S. has. It is not a tool problem, it is a culture problem.
For the thinkers out there, what else lies in Switzerland?
Swiss bank accounts, notorious for hiding laundered cash hordes and other ill gotten gains from criminal financial activity.
The CERN supercollider facility, marked by satanic symbology and dedicated to discovering how energy released during particle collision could open portals or worm holes to allow the entry of ‘called spirits’ (demons) into our realm.
The city of Davos, home central meeting place of the Bilderberg Group, an annual elitist collective gathering of the wealthiest people on earth that believe they have the right to determine and dictate the path ‘forward’ for all of human civilization, including our economic endeavors, social structures and political environments. Globalists like Klaus Schwab and Bill Gates attend and head these meetings to set and orchestrate the New World Order globalist government agenda for each coming year.
Why has Switzerland always remained neutral in times of war, and never been attacked or invaded, despite never assembling a standing military force of any size? You could argue it’s because of their gun policies. I would argue that it’s because the country has been involved in financing both sides of every modern war and profiting from that arrangement for a very long time.
The globalists like Switzerland for a number of reasons, because they not only have cover from which to operate from, but because their long control over the nation has allowed them to operate with impunity and immunity within its borders as a base of operations for their globalist takeover agenda.
Despite the narrative, the gun ownership there isn’t to protect the nation or its citizens. The policies exist as they do apart from and contrary to the rest of European gun policy solely to protect the super elites’ nefarious activities and their criminal global pursuits.
Armed citizens there are nothing more than cannon fodder, the unpaid and unsuspecting front line security and defense forces for the wealthiest despots and tyrants of the world and their criminal organizational funding.
They better be ready for an internal attack,we have OPEN BORDERS with no checks on the criminals that are coming in now. That why Japan and Germany thought about invading but didn’t all homes were armed with guns for protection not shooting up schools. We drove our pickups to school with guns in back window nobody ever got shot pu’s were never locked. You have no parental discipline like it was in the50’s 60’s70’s Mental health needs to be addressed now. I will protect my family and home for the rest of my life from any foreign invasion or country that wants to try to take our country away from a free AMERICA.
