A late-night doorbell prank in southeast Houston ended in tragedy. Police say a 42-year-old man opened fire on kids running from his house, killing an 11-year-old boy.
The suspect, identified as Leon Gonzalo Jr., now faces a murder charge per ABC News.
Investigators say the shooting happened around 10:55 p.m. Saturday after a group of kids banged on doors and ran—a “ding-dong-ditch” prank trending on social media.
A witness reported a man ran into the street and fired as the children fled. The boy, shot in the back, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Sunday.

Police said the evidence does not point to self-defense.
According to Harris County records, Gonzalo was arrested and booked Tuesday morning on one count of murder and taken to the county jail.
Police previously detained and questioned a person after the shooting; the arrest followed the child’s death the next day.
For gun owners, this is a hard, sobering reminder: threat assessment comes first. Know your state’s use-of-force law. Identify the actual, imminent threat.
Don’t shoot at fleeing people. Call 911 and be the calm adult—because one reckless trigger pull can destroy lives.

What was an 11 year old kid doing roam the streets of Southeast Houston, TX (a notoriously rough area) at 11:00 pm ? Lots of wrong in this situation. An 11 year old has no business prowling the streets that late. The shooter was in no danger. Sad deal all around.
Boy, this is a sad thing to read over morning coffee. I think back to when I was 11 years old, over 50 years ago, we probably “terrorized” the neighbors too, especially on Halloween. Even a ring of the doorbell and a flaming bag of dog poop never got us shot, though I’m sure the thought crossed my neighbors’ mind. Maybe that’s the reason when I turned 16 and was sniffing around his 16 year old daughter he wasn’t very receptive to that idea. I can’t imagine why he hated me so bad …
As tragic as this is, I keep asking myself why the parents allowed 11 year old’s to be out roaming around in the ‘hood’ at 11pm. When I was 11, if I wasn’t home by the time the street lights came on my parents sent out the army, air force, navy, and the marines. When they found me I’d need surgery to pull my dad’s foot out of my arse. Man, how times have changed.
Whose fault is this? Looking back over 50 years since I was that age, I blame the parents 100%. You simply can’t allow the streets to raise your kids for you, especially in the minority groups. Statistically, young blacks are committing 80% of street crime, especially black-on-black crimes, including murders. There are documented cases of 8, 9, and 10 year old’s roaming the streets with guns. Where are they getting them?
Unfortunately, most democrats no longer have any desire to enforce the rule of law and apparently encourage out-and-out anarchy. And we know which way minorities typically vote. That’s why MY voter registration card has had an ‘R’ on it for the last 45 years and no longer a ‘D’. Yes, I’ve seen the light.
Back to the elephant in the room. With crime as bad as it is, is it any wonder why the public is getting so trigger happy? The other day I got a Ring alert and saw some dude going to my front door loudly knocking on it, and when I didn’t answer, he walked to the back door and hammered on that. He had some stupid flier in his hand, so I knew I didn’t need to answer. Turns out he thought I needed a handyman, according to his flier. But my first thought when I first saw him walking through my yard – reach for the gun. He put his flier in my mail box and off he went. I didn’t run outside and shoot him in the back. Now if he had tried a kick my door down, it would have been a different story.
This homeowner was in the wrong, plan and simple. No matter how upset or mad he was, he shouldn’t have opened his door, and definitely not shot someone in the back as they are running away.
Seems you are still in the dark
So you think it’s okay to shoot an 11 year old in the back while they are running away — and you think I’M in the dark?!
I hope this guy Rots in PRISON forever.
Children playing juvenile pranks like ding dong ditch (who didn’t do that as a kid?) are not threatening. They’re mildly annoying.
And overreacting nuts like the guy who shot the kid for doing it give all responsible gun owners a bad name. I say bury him under the prison. Zero excuse for shooting 11-year-olds because you were annoyed.
I agree… Some of the biggest excuses the anti-gun people use are incidents like these. If everyone that owned a gun acted like a responsible gun owner we wouldn’t have the problems we have today.
As a gun owner, I agree 100%.
This guy really messed up, and he will pay for what he did. On the flip side, these kids and others will think twice about playing a dangerous game. This is not a prank, it’s not funny, and the parents as well as these kids should be held responsible for this tragedy. Anyone besides the police banging on someone’s door at that time of night is probably up to no good, and we have read about this too many times.
Bad judgement call on th home owners part. Going outside and shooting two suspect running away, big mistake. Parents of the eleven year old children what happened to parential supervision? Why were two eleven year olds out running the streets of Houston TX at night. Biggest mistake parents you failed in your responsibility of raising and caring for your child. After reading the statement I feel this is not the 1st time they have done this. So your lack of supervision releases you from your responsibility as a parent so that children can reak havoc on other home owners trying to live there lives in peace and spend quality time with there family.
Hopefully doorbell cameras will reveal what really happened . Possibly the other popular internet “prank” of kicking the door as if a home break in was occurring . Maybe they will find and charge some of the other instigators as they are now complicit in the boys death .
Poor practice to shoot a retreating assailant but heat of the moment , state of mind , and any other circumstances will come into play for the defense .
it’s how you apply the law. you never know what the intent is until it’s too late and i’m sure in houston the law says the criminal is innocent after being proved guilty.
First of all, a doorbell prank is not a life-threatening “crime” in any city or state that I know of 🤷🏽. Secondly, there isn’t one city or state that says “Castle Doctrine,” “self-defense,” or “stand your ground” applies to shooting people outside the home who are running away. This homeowner has no defense for his actions and will probably be advised to plead to a lesser manslaughter charge instead of risking a 2nd degree murder conviction. There’s really no issue here of “how you apply the law”……he clearly violated it
first calling it a prank is just a way to minimize what is going on. how do you know that they weren’t trying to get someone to open the door and then over power the home owner? were they armed? did they have a criminal record? age suggests they shouldn’t even be out at night running in a gang. relying on the kids to tell the truth is bad assumption. the home owner made a bad decision he should have let it play out further then started shooting.
“The home owner made a bad decision” and “should have let it play out further.” Absolutely! That’s why he’s going to jail and his attorney will be looking for a plea to manslaughter. Unfortunately, he’s also going to be facing a civil suit. Like I said, the usual defense of “Castle Doctrine,” “self defense” and “stand your ground” do not apply here
Minimize what’s going on?
Well, here’s how I know… They were running away from the house when he opened the door. There was no one there. This is a prank, the gun owner is wrong, the con owner should be going to prison.
paul…….plain and simple…ur ignorant
no ignorant is assuming abc news in a democrat stronghold is telling the whole story!
but keep opening your door and maybe give them a big hug so they know you won’t fight back.
Thanks paul….. again you’ve proven it to me and everyone else…. not only ignorant but crazy. Say something that makes sense…wow
how about you are a liberal poser…makes sense enough……quit perpetuating the left myth that you know everything that you are told to believe and join reality.
Still proving me right…..ur crazy. Your coments are laughable. Great comedy though.
trying to insult and offering no real solutions or opinions on the subject at hand shows that you voted for communism all the way!
LOL
