Dick’s CEO said its recent anti-gun position is “not going to be positive from a traffic standpoint and a sales standpoint.”

Just weeks after halting sales of all firearms to customers under the age of 21 and banning AR-type rifles in its Field and Stream stores, retail giant Dick’s Sporting Goods announced a “deeper-than-expected” sales drop as their stock sank the most in four months, according to Fortune.
“There’s going to be some pushback and we expected that,” said CEO Edward Stack, in an earnings call with Wall Street analysts, CNN reports. “There are going to be the people who don’t shop us anymore for anything.”
Fortune is careful to tell its readers not to blame the company’s struggles on its anti-gun stance. Dick’s has struggled with “excessive inventory and deep discounting,” and it’s been unable to compete with Amazon and Nike, who have both been pushing customers to make online purchases.
Still, Fortune admits that Dick’s has no direct competition. After Sports Authority’s collapse in 2016, Dick’s became the only national chain of its kind, and investors were hopeful the company could capitalize on its singularity.
That hasn’t happened, and on Tuesday Stack admitted the decision to limit gun sales is “not going to be positive from a traffic standpoint and a sales standpoint.”
While he said it’s still too early to judge the effect of his decision, shares of Dick’s fell as much as 7.3 percent to $30.19 in New York, the biggest intraday decline since mid-November.
Same-store sales have been slumping and are expected to stay that way for another year, according to the company. Analysts had estimated these sales would only drop 1.2 percent; instead, they dropped 2 percent last quarter.

Gun enthusiasts won’t be surprised to learn that the gun and hunting parts of Dick’s business has been “extremely soft,” according to Sam Poser, analyst for Susquehanna Financial Group. He told Fortune that Dick’s decision to limit gun sales was a “prudent decision both from a business and PR perspective,” though it’s unclear why angering a customer base would ever be a prudent business decision.
Dick’s is facing more than just financial trouble. We reported earlier this month that the company is fighting a lawsuit for age discrimination from a 20-year-old in Oregon who was denied the purchase of a Ruger 10/22 at a Field and Stream. Based on Oregon’s discrimination laws, his suit has a good chance of success.
Despite its troubles, the company still plans to open 19 new stores this year.

Dick’s Sporting Goods rubbed me raw with poor execution of delivery on products that were falsely advertised in their weekly flier some years ago. I would occasionally stop there to look around since they do have a large selection but rarely bought because their prices are out of line with the industry and there customer service sucked. Since they made their draconian decision, I won’t grace them with my presence for anything. And I tell any of my sporting buddies those stories. Nothing better than experience speaking.

Just treat Dick’s like Best Buy. Go in look around ask all the questions, take the firearm to the indoor range, if they have one. Fire a few rounds to get a feel for the firearm. Fire a bunch of firearms if you would like. Then when they are like so we see you like this firearm. Say yeah I think I will get me one. Then as they get ready and super excited ringing you up, look at them and ask what they doing. When they look confused, just tell them you are not buying the firearm from them, as you do not want to support a company that doesn’t believe in the second amendment. Then ask if you can fire something else. Chances are you will be asked to leave, but I bet a good lawyer could get you a settlement because it’s not up to them where you plan to purchase only to provide you with customer service.

We drove by a Dicks store we’ve stopped at many times in the past. I didn’t even look that way since I’ve taken them off the list of stores I shop at. Then my wife unexpectedly made a joke, she said “do you want to shop at Dicks” and everyone in the car had a belly laugh.
We look forward to seeing news stories with the words Dick’s and bankruptcy in the headline.
I don’t have a problem with Dick’s selling only sporting guns and not tactical or semi-auto high capacity guns.

They had signs up for ammunition was on sale. So I pick up a couple of boxes of 30-06 go to check out the clerk rings it up full price.

They are building a huge one in Waco, Texas. I don’t know if it will be a field and stream store or not but, in either case, the prudent choice for them would be to cut their losses and walk away. We simply have a limited number of junior baseball programs and the LGBTQ community here doesnt’ even HAVE a soccer or Basketball team.

If Dick’s chooses to NOT sell a product at all, that’s fine with me. It’s their company and it’s their option. If Dick’s chooses to discriminate and tell ADULT US citizens, who can vote and join the military, that they will sell to a 21 year old person, but not the 20 year old person standing next to them at the counter, that is completely illegal and they are going to lose their ass in lawsuits.
ALSO, if Dick’s wants to stop selling any type of product TO EVERYONE, like semi-auto rifles, factory standard magazines, etc, that’s completely up to them. But by putting out a company written political statement on company letterhead through the company media channels that they are opposed to these products and supporting gun control, then they are voluntarily alienating a huge chunk of their customers.

By the way, I know many hunters in Colorado that hike 8-10 hours a day above 8000ft during elk season. I also know many more that shoot that are mountain bikers, or skiers, or runners, or golfers. Dick’s may have never sold them a gun, but they DID piss them off too. They will be out of business within a couple years.

Just to let you know, gun sales are a substantial part of any sporting goods store’s sales. Dick’s will surely suffer for their lapse of judgement in this matter. I congratulate Dick’s on making this excellent decision. In the past I have entered a Dick’s store twice; once to look at ammo prices and once to purchase an airsoft pellet rifle. The ammo prices were ridiculously high so I did not buy. When I spoke to the clerk regarding firearm and ammunition general questions, it was clear that the person knew nothing about either subject even though he was in charge of that section of the store. As for the airsoft gun, it broke the second time I used it. Since the merchandise was cheaply made but expensive to purchase, and the staff knew nothing about the products they sold, it is smart to stop selling them. I am sure that they will be able to make a profit if they start charging people a small fee to use the restroom key. Using the restroom seemed to be the reason that most of the people stopped in but at least on the way out, they would buy a soda and/or a “power bar” of some sort when they handed the key back. So, since they suck at something, it is smart to stop trying to make money on the things they suck at.

I can’t understand why people are so upset about this. I’ve never bought any of my guns from anyone other than my local gun dealer. I would always rather give my hard earned money to a small business owner who takes pride in what they are selling and has a deep knowledge about the products they sell. It’s the Walmarts, Dick’s and other big corporations that have put many of the locally owned gun shops out of business. I wish the big box stores would get out of the gun business entirely and leave it to the people you can trust know something about what they are selling you.
Folks who own small gun shops and military surplus stores are good people all right. They deserve our support, they are part of the bedrock of America and keeping it alive.

My family and friends stoped shopping there after there Morristown grand opening.They had what we wanted, Plenty on display, 2 weeks later, staph left, Great merchandise left.Talked to management was told the desply was for grand opening Draw.65 percent of clerks were gone. Merchandise also. Asked where I could get my item, told could be ordered. 2 weeks ,or we don’t carry that anymore. Guess You. Won’t see us again either. (10 of us) what’s left in store is over priced. We have gone out of town ( clarksberg, Nashville) farther to drive, but have what a sporting goods store should have. I have shopped at Dick’s in the past but their prices were too high to buy anything. Then I found a semiautomatic 20GA shotgun for $399 in their catalog (not in stock). Ordered it, order got cancelled internally. When it finally arrived it was $60 more than the catalog price. They gave me $60 worth of shells for it, that wouldn’t cycle the action. Haven’t been in since. Academy does have better prices, always had. Have bought many pieces there with never a hick-up.

Rosie O’Donnell and Penny Marshall were K-Mart spokeswomen who led the charge to remove firearms from K-Mart. K-Mart bent to their pressure and look where that got them. I’d shop Dick’s primarily to buy deer stands and hunting equipment and over the years ended up buying a gun or two from them. But while I was there, I’d pick up some socks, boots, a few boxes of ammo, maybe some scent killer etc. Now I no longer have a reason to shop there. Congratulations Dick’s, you’re about to become the new K-Mart.

I don’t shop at Dick’s, I did go in a couple times, but found their prices a bit high for my taste. I rather support the 3 gunshops in my town than the wallet of some corporate type far removed from their customer base. Online sales for everything is killing most brick and mortar specialty businesses, where multiple offerings and free or very low shipping charges make time and gas to drive 20 miles to them a waste.
This is beyond great news, shows that it is also the silent majority that is stepping up. Now we should make sure the same thing is done to Kroger food stores, as they have taken all gun magazines off there shelves, and notified the companies that they will not longer allow anything guns in them, and they will not even allow a picture of a gun. Lets boycott krogers, which I know runs under many names, some being King Snoopers, Smiths, Dillon’s, picNsave,Fry’s, city marker, the fresh market, metro, auto center, fred meyer, food4less, capps, and cala foods.

I worked for Dick’s years ago. I was the archery tech and the top salesman of firearms in our district. Even after getting a better paying job, I stayed with them part-time because I loved the job. But when leadership started changing, I knew it was time to go. Now, I won’t set foot in their stores. They care little for the customer and even less about their employees. This is just the latest in a long line of bad decisions. I feel for the people that will lose their jobs, but this company has no choice but to close it’s doors if they continue on this path.

I have spent money in your store before. I thought you were overpriced, over whelming stock and rather bland and forgettable shopping experience. I will now NEVER enter another Dick’s Sporting Goods store EVER! My wife, children (young adults), extended family and I will not enter your stores ever. I believe in shopping at small businesses since corporations are nothing more than greedy job killing (small business’s) wallet suckers. As a business you NEVER take a politics stance especially one that is emotional.
Gun sales are not the problem at Dick’s and Field & Stream. It is only a symptom. They operate their stores as if every customer knows exactly what they want and the stores only employee “stockers”. Very little customer service in the stores. They need to look deeper to turn their stores around.
Hope they go out of business. Apparently they underestimated the amount of business gun owners give their stores. Continue the boycotts of all the anti 2A stores. It’ll probably have more effect than trying to get our duly elected officials to support our rights. Money talks, BS walks.

I usually spend a couple of hundred a year at dicks. My wife spends at least twice that on clothes and shoes. That has ended. Academy sports. No big deal just supporting those who support me.
I stopped shopping at Dick’s the last time they discontinued selling ARs. So their current action just deepens my loyalty to Academy Sports and my local stores.
They are over priced on their products. I own a small gun shop if you want to purchase a firearm call me I don’t discriminate against age.

I have spent a TON of money at Dicks other store Field And Stream, a top if the line crossbow, rofles, ammo, clothing, bolts and arrows, and in the range of 3-4 THOUSAND a gear. Yes I love my hobbies and am thankful I can have them. But when these f’rs think they can pander to the left as another person mentioned, I AM DONE and have been shopping elsewhere. Runnings and local shops, they are. FAR from the inly game in town. I loved going to see one guy who coukd keep up with my knowledge and passion of the hobbies but guessing he has a lot of free time now with no one I know going to Dicks or Field And Stream since they took a anti gun stance. In general, the same is true here in Texas Dicks and Cabelas); but, Dicks has had some good ammo sales occasionally that I have taken advantage of in the past. But, I will not even be looking at their ads anymore.

I live in CT, a little over an hour from Cabelas and my wife and I love driving to the store. We make an afternoon out of it…they have great deals and have great food! Last time I bought a Remington 783 in .270 and wife bought her now favorite winter coat.
They treat military like family there. 20% discount at the deli, fudge and nut stand too. 5% on everything else. Police EMS firefighter also part of the appreciation.

Cabelas no longer gives veterans a discount. This policy began about a week ago. I believe it was due to Bass Pro purchasing them.
Actually, the policy changed, but they only give it in the store. Not online anymore.
I can usually find stuff online for less money – if I know what I want.

I am not sure where the person lives that wrote this but there are plenty of stores that sale everything dick’s sales and normally cheaper. Maybe they are only regional stores that we have around here but they are not the only player in the game for certain. I have no need to support dick’s and it will be interesting to see if pandering to the left works out for them. Personally, I think running a retail business you would want to be netural in polictics otherwise you run the risk of alienating 1/2 the population pushing one sides agenda over the other.
Also, go support your local gun shops as most of the time you can find any guns dick’s sells cheaper there and they will appreciate your business a lot more than the big chain stores.
What they don’t understand is that those calling for tighter restrictions don’t shop at Dick’s to begin with.
I shopped there, past tense, for all of my hiking and camping needs, which adds up to around $11-1200/year. Buying Morrell shoes, not cheap, with the extra warranty, that I have never used. New rain gear, because I am rough on my gear. Condor back packs, because I always want to see if the next model is better than the last was. Never bought a fire arm there and I will never buy ANYTHING from there again. How can you forget your primary customer base? What’s makes you more money? Several months back I saw Dick’s had a sale on .22 rifles. I went to pick one up. I caught a delay, no problem has happened before, just wait. Nope not with Dicks, if you hit delay waiting 7 days doesn’t do it. The consumer has to do Dicks job to get the firearm, you have to call and get a all clear sent to them. It wasn’t that good of Deal, I was done with Dicks then. I don’t believe they ever wanted to sell guns, I think they were just putting up a facade to begin with. They are a over priced clothing store!

Kroger is pulling all gun magazines from their shelves and will not sell Tham anymore. Stores that they own, like Fred Meyer, will no longer sell to anyone under 21.

They will review sales by customers demographics, when sales drop, they will see the correlation.
Gun buyers=outdoor activities =their business model
They are done for, they might make it through 3 maybe 4 quarters of poor sales. Surviving longer only because they are large and can absorb large economic downturn. But marketing drives the show in any retail. First they will replace their top tier organization, replace it for a group that will reorganize in chapter 11. They won’t emerge. They’ve changed their business model to suit the libtrals which are not too business savvy.
You rightly contributed to their demise. Just don’t go there anymore and that will put the nail in their coffin.

Their gun position is just the latest straw. My wife and I are baseball parents, so we’ve spent quite a bit of money at Dick’s over the years, but their service tanked about three years ago. This was about the same time that Sports Authority went belly up.
First, they clearly cut their staffing levels, so you could never get any help. Then they moved all the shoes into the backroom, so you have to deal with a bored and apethetic employee when trying on shoes. We used to buy all our athletic shoes there, but my wife won’t even go in anymore. The last time she shopped with Dicks, she had ordered some athletic shoes from Dicks.com and the ones they sent her had clearly been well worn. This was from the warehouse. The local store gave her an unbelievable run around when it came to getting a refund, and she was on the phone with coporate for an hour before she finally got her money. And they had sent her USED shoes!
Amazon does this too. They’ll spent time/money to make used products look new and re-sell them as brand-spankin’ new if possible.
And I still won’t go back to Dicks ever again.

I’m not convinced Dick’s sold any guns when they were selling guns. I went to Dick’s in Dallas three times to buy ammo and could not get waited on all three times. I walked out empty handed every time. I’ll never go back. Now that they have gone woke, I hope they go broke.
I agree. My local Dick’s had one knowledgable hunter working in the guns/ammo department up until about three years ago. Either he quit, retired or was reassigned, but NOBODY is ever back there anymore. I have to pick up the store phone and page someone to come back there. I’m done with them and sticking to on-line sales, Cabela’s, or my local sports shops
