Fox 5’s Emily Miller investigates Washington D.C.’s re-registration scheme for law-abiding gun owners.
Why do gun owners need to have their fingerprints scanned once again into the District’s computerized system?
Well, D.C. City Council Chairman Phil Mendelson claims that the District’s police department “lost” the fingerprints. Again, as Miller points out, they were taken and stored electronically, so how exactly were they lost?
No one seems to have an answer to that question.
Now gun owners will have to pay $35 to be fingerprinted once again and pay a registration fee of $13 for every firearm they own. Not only that, but the real kicker is that the registration is only good for three years after which another $13 fee per gun is due.
Not surprisingly, District gun owners are reluctant to comply with the re-registration scheme. At the start of the year there were 7,000 renewal notices sent out. Of those 7,000, only 605 gun owners submitted fingerprints once again. Moreover, of the estimated 30,000 registered guns in the city, only 1,356 have been renewed, according to Miller’s report.
Those who fail to register their firearms on time may face felony charges.
When people tell you that you’re fears are overblown or that you’re being paranoid about the fate of the Second Amendment in this country, instead of arguing with them just tell them to move to our nation’s capital. If they have any sense at all they’ll soon realize that the threat is real. D.C. is what gun-control advocates want the rest of the country to look like. And that’s scary.
